It is what it is.
This is a CD drive, does not work with BluRay. Frankly it has been so long since I used a disk for a movie, I had to look up what app to use to PLAY the movie! (VLC Media Player is free and opensource so it’s, in my opinion, the best option)The drive itself isn’t super ugly, so that’s nice. However, the tray shuts weird on mine. I have to avoid a bit of a plastic lip on one side. Still works fine though. There’s a touch button on the back for opening the player. Or you can use the old fashioned push button on the tray. Both work. The manufacturers didn’t translate their instructions to English well, but I still got the main point – don’t try to use this through a hub of any sort. Plug it directly into your computer. I was like, “Psh I have a great hub, it will be fine,” and while it worked…it made my screens freak out, rearrange themselves, etc. None of that happens if you plug it directly into the computer. Guess they knew what they were talking about! They include the USB cable for connecting to your computer, and a power cable in case your computer doesn’t give it enough power. Mine did, so I didn’t have to use the power cord, thank goodness, because then I’d have a mess of wires everywhere (the cord for the PC connection is short, and so is the power cord…).In any case, this does what I needed it for, which is installing my super old copy of Roller Coaster Tycoon on my laptop!

Works on both Windows and Mac!
I am happy that this YOTUO External CD Drive, Portable USB 3.0 Type-C CD/DVD RW Drive Player works well on both my Windows 10 Laptop and my wife Mac Book Pro. Easily recognized on both and works without issues. We don’t have many CDs or DVDs anymore but this does come in handy when we do come across the situation where we need it.

It works and comes with cable that should support almost all use cases.
While DVD’s and CD’s are rapidly going the way of the dodo, it still is fairly common to need to access one. As most recent laptops (and a lot of recent desktops) no longer include internal optical drives, this makes USB drives like this one pretty much the only option. The good news is, this option seems to work fine. This external player is simply a laptop form factor MATSHITA UJ8A0AS DVD+/-RW/RAM drive in an external enclosure with an ATAPI/SATA bridge, and, as such, it works well. The drive includes a standard USB3 interface cable along with a USB-C to USB adapter and when tested on my HP laptop it worked fine on both ports. There is also an additional USB power cable to allow connecting to a second USB port for those cases where the primary port cannot supply enough power, though you are unlikely to run into this except on some older USB2 ports. On my laptop, the drive worked fine without needing the secondary power cable. After connecting it and letting it be recognized by Windows, it pretty much “just worked” without the need to install any drivers. I was able to read a couple of old CD’s, burn a CD-R, and I even UDF formatted a DVD+RW and copied a large ISO over to it. Everything worked perfectly. The only headache I had at all with this drive was when I went to play a DVD video it complained that no region code was set on the drive and it refused to play. Once I went into Device Manager under the drive properties and set the region to Region 1, I had no more issues and my DVD movie played back just fine. This is actually fairly typical as a lot of drives initially come set to “no region” and require you to set them to the actual geographic region you live in when you first receive them (US is Region 1). So, this is not a negative per se, just a “be aware” you may need to set the region code before playing back some DVD videos (once set, it will keep the setting forever unless you change it again). If you have a newer laptop or desktop that didn’t come with an optical drive and you find yourself in need of one, this drive is reasonably priced and seems like it will do just fine. I happily recommend it.

Works well for what it is, some limitations
This product does what it says it does: it is a CD/DVD player that does not require any drivers to be installed manually. It is easy to set up as a plug-and-play device and the touch button for ejecting the drive is not too sensitive, but is responsive. It worked well with the PC, and even worked with my MacBook Air (by connecting it to a little converter). Unfortunately, it does not have any capability of working with a TV (even when connecting to the USB drive). It also comes with instructions that are, at times, baffling, most likely due to a language barrier. Mostly, the instructions were unhelpful/incomprehensible. However, they largely did not matter, since the plug-and-play nature of the device mostly handled it!I would definitely recommend this device, though please note: it does not play Blu-ray Discs!

Pretty basic, you get what you pay for
This is a pretty standard external CD-ROM drive. It’s nice that it comes with a variety of cords/adapters so you can use it with different devices and it doesn’t require any apps or software which is super nice. I tried several used DVDs I needed to verify whether or not they worked and it booted them up quickly but every single one would lock up at the title screen and struggle to get started for the first few minutes once you actually played the film/show. I do like how simple the interface is, very user friendly.

Seems well-made for the money…
I did everything I could–even (gasp!) reading the instructions several times–but simply could not get this external drive to work with my (admittedly older) PC set-up. I don’t think the drive unit is the problem: It is solidly made with some surprisingly thoughtful features, and theoretically ought to work just fine if you can get it to talk with your system.

Great basic option.
I used a converter to connect it to my macbook to burn my husbands music onto CDs for my car. It worked without a hitch. It’s pretty basic and no frills but it serves it’s purpose well. I forgot how much I appreciate having a disk drive and this thing is small enough to use on the go if needed. It’s a good value in my opinion.

Great to use with computers that have omitted optical drives
ReviewsByMuseIn upgrading my laptop I realized that I didn’t have a way to copy over some files that were archived on an optical disc, so needed a way to get them into the computer. This product fit the job perfectly. My computer has USB-C plugs, which are fast, and this external reader worked plug and play. Would recommend.

Saved me hours and dollars
I have a ton of CDs that I love to listen to but don’t have a CD player in my car or computer anymore. Now it’s all saved in a hard drive and goes with me on my phone.

Sleek design, easy setup (with caveats)
For Windows users: The directions say to plug it in directly to the computer and then wait 12 seconds after which the connection is successful (during which it may not eject a CD you put in before connecting to your computer). DO NOT force it open until you see the DVD RW Drive available in Windows Explorer and directly double-click on the DVD RW Drive. Then it should prompt you to put in a CD. I used the rattiest old burned CD from decades ago I had (legit had dried paint on it, scratched to hell) and it plays like a dream on my computer. Easy to copy over the files on RW discs (pictures, music, etc). The touch to open disc drive button is VERY sensitive so a light touch, but be aware it takes a few seconds to respond so just be patient. Also, it’s very slim and sleekly designed but feels a little delicate, so just handle with care as you’re using it. Will update when I find someone who still sells RW discs but so far a great buy!

Adjust some desktop settings first
Laptops are going the way of slimming down and removing hardware support for disks. I was excited to get this device to keep working with the disks I do have on my Windows laptop. When I first plugged the USB cord in my laptop the device was recognized real quick. Opening and closing the drive bay was responsive. When I first put a DVD movie in it became unresponsive for about a minute. It was weird. Wanting to give it a fair chance I went and made sure appropriate DVD apps were setup to support playback. Once I got that set I started from scratch. Re-plugged the USB cord in, took maybe 5 seconds to recognize. Opened the drive bay, put in a DVD movie, Windows popped up the message of what to do with it, selected my DVD playback app and it played right off. No hesitation this time. So if there are glitches, it could possibly be Windows just needing a bump.

Don’t use DVD’s much any more, but handy when needed
This versatile little DVD burner/player has come in handy so far in two ways; IT work and playing movies for my kids. It comes with an adapter to go from standard usb to usb-c if needed and that is a big plus. The unit is light in weight and about the size of most external DVD burners/players. It will easily sit alongside your laptop in a bag.I highly recommend this unit for external DVD use, whether burning discs or just wanting to play them.

Small portable DVD player/recorder
Newer computers and especially the thinner and thinner laptops out now do not have any DVD drives. WIth most things going digital that makes sense but what about those of us that have software and movies still on DVD’s and CD’S? Do you repurchase them in digital format or do you get this DVD rewriter? Obviously this is the perfect choice and it works great. it comes with several cords to hook the DVD to both PC and MAC computers. Using the USB 3 cord I had this plugged in and playing a DVD in a matter of seconds. The drive comes with a soft velvet-like bag to store the drive and cables in for those people that do not have a need to always have it out and connected. That was a really nice touch to keep it all in one place and ready to go when needed.

Very easy setup
I don’t know why but most laptops and computers nowadays do not have an internal disc drive. So, I purchased this external drive so I could watch DVDs and such on it.This external cd drive is very easy to operate. You literally just plug it in and your computer will do the rest of the work (recognizing it and such).I have not had any issues with playback or lagginess.Works great and I have been able to watch a DVD and download music to a cd disc so far. I haven’t tried anything else beyond that yet, but haven’t had any issues at all. This is honestly a good price and works great with no issues. Even easy for non-tech people to set up!Definitely recommend!

Great option to get that disc access back
Since laptops are generally not coming with DVD drives anymore, it’s nice to have a simple and affordable option like this for those of us with pics and videos stored on disc, or software that isn’t a download. Pretty surprised at how cheap these are to be honest. But it works great. Plugs into USB port, and off you go. Everything working as expected. Only issue I’ve had is that I couldn’t get one disc out of about 8 to eject with the buttons on the drive. Had to use the eject function in the menu on the computer and that worked.

Nice & portable DVD reader/writer
I tested this out on my MacBook Air and my Windows-based laptop. It does include an adapter cable if your USB ports cannot sufficiently power the external drive. I did test burning a DVD but it failed more than likely due to the kind of blank DVDs I have available. I will be purchasing some other types to fully test it out. So far, happy!

I tried to use a different maker’s external CD drive but found it worked a bit hit and miss when it was operating, however this runs very smoothly and I have had no problems. I recommend this make..

Great external drive
I got this as my laptop doesn’t come with a disc drive so I can view my children’s class pictures as I order the CD to keep the pictures forever. The drive plugged in easily to my laptop via USB. It comes with another option cord in case your laptop or device uses the jack, like headphones. It performed quickly and everything worked smoothly. I can recommend.

It is a DVD drive….
Long ago, when cars ran on gasoline and bread cost $3, if you bought a computer it came with one of these devices built into the side of it. While I completely understand why PC manufacturers have evolved I do sometimes have a need to load old software from a disc or make a local backup of something. This is a pretty basic drive that has USB A and C connection choices, comes with a little storage bag and was quickly recognized by my Lenovo PC. No complaints whatsoever, good value and works. 5/5

Simple external CD/DVD that works
This is a nice, simple, easy to use external CD/DVD drive. It does what it’s designed to do. No drivers are needed, it’s just plug and play. I was able to read CDs, DVDs, and transfer data to and from the discs. MY biggest complaint is the length of the cables. The old style USB 3 cables are not as common anymore and having it so short works fine for laptops, but not good for other PCs. While I’m sure I can get a longer cable, it’s just inconvenient. The second cable used for additional power, is also very short. Otherwise it does what I need it to do!

Great Replacement
I purchased this CD/DVD/Rewrite drive because my drive stopped working. My laptop still works great so there was no point buying a new one. The drive is very lightweight and easy to use. I plan to make some mp3 CDs so I’m very happy that I can do that with this drive as well. Drive comes with a bag so everything can be kept together.I’m very glad I was able to find a portable drive to use with my laptop. The price was affordable and using it was easy enough even for my lack of tech skills.

It reads, it writes. It did not need extra power on my PC. It was straightforward to connect. Windows recognized it without extra drivers.

Plug and play, works great, recommended
This is a fine little USB CD/DVD drive. I’ve had a few different USB CD drives over the years, and this one has been the easiest to set up and use. Just plug it in and it works within a second at most. As far as function, it does everything it says it does, but that shouldn’t be surprising. Comes with a bag and a USB C adapter, as well as the expected cords. I think it’s attractively styled as well. Well worth the price, I recommend you get one if you need an optical disk drive!

Handy USB connected External High Speed Drive
Affordable option for todays PC’s with no included CD/ DVD/Blu Ray device. Has full read/write capabilities, includes multiple cables if you need additional power to the device (mine did not). I did have to download a player app but otherwise no issues. As other reviewers have mentioned, ensure your region is set if you want to play movies.

Plug and playCD/DVD
The media could not be loaded.
Simple, plug and play USB CD/DVD player/writer. It comes with a USB cable, a USB to USB-C adapter, a USB to DC power cable and a soft carrying pouch. I did not need the USB to DC power cable, but some older devices may not have enough available power on a single USB port to power the player. The separate USB to DC cable allows you to use a second USB port to draw more current if needed. The other end plugs into a small DC power jack on the device. I was able to play a DVD through VLOC (open source video/DVD software) with no issues at all. It will also read and write to standard CD and DVDs for file storage and backups. The only negative thing I have found so far is the length of the USB cable. It’s about 18″ long, which is fine for portable use, but not very convenient for connecting to a desktop computer.

Basic DVD/CD player, finicky connection
Update:After a very few uses this drive simply wouldn’t recognize optical media anymore. The drive is visible to Windows, but the media is not detected. Nothing I’ve done seems to fix it.=========================Original review:========================= This really is a no frills optical drive which is not a negative. I was able to play DVD’s and CD’s without any concerns. It does the job expected of it. The only issue I ran into was the connection. If you aren’t directly connected to the computer then you probably won’t be able to recognize the drive or the content in the drive. When I connected these through three different USB hubs (HDD and two external USB hubs) the computer could recognize the drive. However, the content was not accessible and I would get an error stating that there was no media present when I had a CD or DVD inserted. The tray is manual and you’ll have to use both hands to seat it in place when you close it. The catch which hold the tray in place is strong enough that if the drive isn’t secured you’ll just be pushing it around instead of closing it if you use one hand without a lot of pressure on the top of the case. The design is simple and has an LED light to let you know it’s connected and powered. I only gave it three stars because this is a basic drive with no options and the initial connection issues with the computer led me to believe it didn’t work. You can’t really go wrong with this if all you need is a basic drive to play music or DVD’s.
