    Feature rich, flexible amp

Maybe it’s because I haven’t bought an amp in awhile, but this amp has so many bells, whistles and menus, it took me a few days to set up. Parts of the challenge wasn’t so much the amp as the automatic behaviors that can come with HDMI power and input control, and the fact I wanted to use a programmable remote. It’s a great amp, I recommend it for 5.1 use, but just be prepared to put in some quality time with the manual. BTW, the online FAQ wizard can really help.

    Advertised as 100Watts but….

I jumped on this thinking I was getting a 100 watt stereo system for $249. Come to find out after listing to it, that it wasn’t putting out the power I thought it would. I did some more reading of the listing and the 100 watts is into 6 ohms. It’s only 70 watts into 8 ohm speakers, and it’s 4k. Buy a Denon 8k receiver with 75 watts into 8 ohms instead. I was really disappointed. Why can’t the listings be standardized, most people thing they are seeing for 8 ohms when they look at advertised power

Modern tech, nice looking sounds great.

Works well, a bit confusing setup but after a couple weeks I’ve learned most things. I just wish the mode would show up on screen as just pushing the mode button until you see what you are looking for is a bit tedioius. I use this in another room via wireless IR communication so I cannot see the face of the unit, on screen display would be very helpful.

Excellent sound if you can figure out how to use this receiver

Very good sound through my Klipsch 5.1 speaker system. There is no User Guide (Manual) in the box. The online User Guide is of little use. The receiver’s front menu is confusing to say the least. The Menu on the TV activated through the remote is terrible but I finally got the settings I wanted using this. The remote is still a mystery. That being said, I’m keeping this receiver because of the sound quality.

    100% pleased with the purchase

You just can’t beat this package! For the price trying to piece something else together would be difficult and much more expensive. I built a home theater. This is my first experience with a surround sound system. Took a little figuring out as far as options and selections but once done… the sound is unreal! It brings a home theater to the next level! Would buy again and again.

Really good head unit with a few quirks

If you just need an AV Receiver to just make clear sound for you speakers this unit works well. It has great sound quality and easily fills a room with plenty of power to drive your speakers. However this isn’t that unit and comes with MusicCast and a lot of other digital features. When they work it’s great fairly seamless and I was able to mostly get features working. You will need the app I wasn’t able to get features programmed on the unit without it.When it doesn’t work it is horrible. One feature or another will just stop working with the 3rd party functions. It will then take Sony way to long to release an update that may restore that function. Home Automation never worked right with this unit and was extremely frustrating how often it would just stop working.

    Awesome!

Easy to setup and configure the sound through your speakers. Excellent sound quality and an affordable price. I’ll more than likely be ordering another one of these for the TV in my home office.

    Great Sound

Yamaha always did make nice audio gear. This one has all the bells and whistles. Sub-Woofer goes down to a respectible 25hz. The receiver has tons of effects. Lots of configurable paramaters. It integrated right in with my Fire TV Stick, no problem. One remote for everything. Have it hooked up to my projector. 100″ screen and awesome sound. Can’t beat it!

Awesome receiver and tons of options that can be customized in every conceivable way

In a word this receiver is just awesome and I simply could not be happier with my purchase! There are so many ways to customize this receiver it can be almost daunting at first but I mean that in a good way. Yes there is a bit of a learning curve even for a geek like me but I have found that to be a pleasant experience because Yamaha has very a very good user manual that goes into great detail on everything.I also love how you get on screen menus that display on your TV or computer monitor via the HDMI out connection on the receiver.Another thing is that this really works in conjunction with XBOX series X. It wasn’t that long ago that you simply could NOT find an HDMI audio extractor for the XBOX that would allow you to break out the audio and send it to your surround sound speaker system while also supporting the full 4K @ 120 Hz refresh rate at full resolution. This receiver does all that but you do have to play around just a bit with the XBOX audio settings to make this work. Largely this means disconnecting your headset connected to XBOX so that an additional audio option becomes configurable and allows audio to work with 5.1 surround sound setup. This receiver does a great job of splitting out the audio and sending it directly to my speakers. Finally I don’t have to use headsets every time I want to do something on the XBOX! :)I have this receiver connected to Klipsch Reference Cinema Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 System speakers and the sound quality is nothing short of amazing! I thought my old 5.1 surround speakers were good (though they were starting to have problems at 13 years old) but with a combination of this receiver and this new Klipsch speaker set there is NO comparison – it is just so much better now! I did not even realize how much I was missing out on until I had this new surround system connected. And one last note: Yamaha customer support is also really, really good. I did have a few questions and needed assistance on a couple of things and it was quick & painless to get a hold of a live human being unlike many companies that make this really difficult. And the next day Yamaha level 2 support even called me back to make sure I had everything worked out to my satisfaction and I did not even request the call back. Now how is that for a company that goes above and beyond and truly believes in customer service? AMAZING!I very highly recommend this receiver.

    Quality Surround Receiver

This works great for our surround system. My wife is now hooked and won’t watch the TV without it. The Bluetooth works nice without connection issues. The system comes with a remote microphone we used to balance the surround. I did go in and manually adjust the center channel and Sub afterwards. But a nice feature for sure.

Yamaha Quality Isn’t What It Use To Be!

Update [ 12-23-2023 ]—————————I received my new 8K/4K HDMI cables. Unfortunately, it failed to resolve the video output issue hence the reason I’m returning the Yamaha AV receiver. Hopefully, I have better luck with the Pioneer VSX935 receiver and it’s $200+ cheaper.By the way, I figured out what was actually causing the problem. The RX-V6A receiver has big problems working with my Samsung 4K Smart TV. I temporary hooked up a Vizio TV from another room and the receiver works perfectly.I’m still sending it back because this shouldn’t be an issue because my last Yamaha AV receiver (RX-V571) worked with my Samsung 4K TV so it begs the question why the RX-V6A won’t. Plus, I’ll be saving $200+ by switch and still have the same performance so it would be foolish not to return it.My advice, much sure your TV is compatible with this receiver before buying it![ Original Review ]———————–My Yamaha RX-V571 finally started to go bad here a few weeks ago probably due to electrolytic capacitors drying out. Anyway, the V571 has served me well for many years without any issues hence the reason I decided to buy another Yamaha.Apparently, Yamaha has a problem with quality control or is just cranking out junk these days because the V6A has been nothing but trouble since I unboxed it!It won’t output a video signal to my Samsung 4K Smart TV unless I press the MENU/RETURN buttons a few times. Basically, the output signal indicator on the LED display will continue to flashing until the TV goes back to sleep!I’ve yet to fully test the AV Receiver since I’ve had so much trouble. I’ve got some new 8K/4K certified HDMI cables coming in Friday to see if it resolves the issue. If not, I’ll be returning the AV Receiver for a Pioneer, Sony, or Denon instead. Also, this receiver comes with no MANUAL and can’t find much in the way online either to explain all the features and how to set it up properly. I’m none to impressed by the MENU either, it looks like something running via MS-DOS!Is the RX-V6A worth $599? No and I probably won’t ever buy another Yamaha AV receiver either!

    Could be better

This product does what it says, it provides me with adequate surround sound for my home theater. I have this paired with a Klisph Dolby Atmos Home theater, it is more than loud enough for my 1000 sq/fr home. In fact I have had to dial down the sub a bunch. One thing this receiver lacks is an Equalizer. You can put it on party mode and enhance the sound, but you cannot make simple adjustments based off your sound preferences. Which I do find disappointing for the price, I have an old Pioneer receiver that is 25-30 years old that has these features.I’ll be honest if I didn’t find this brand new being sold by Amazon for $475.00 I would not have purchased. I can also say I would not pay anymore than $500 for this unit.

    Tough receiver!

Beat the heck out of this thing for years!Switched speakers, got a power off issue…My fault, the center channel wasn’t present and wires touched. The receiver shutdown and advised me to check SP wires. Fixed, and works perfectly again. I appreciate the protection mode as opposed to a meltdown failure. Sounds great!

    Impressed

I have owned this receiver for almost a year. I have been an audiophile for about 40 years and would not use anything but tubes in my sound system including my tv sound. When I went to hi def tv I wanted surround sound but did not see a practical or affordable way to do it with tubes. I got a used surround amp and it was ok for tv surround. A few years later it quit and I did not want to waste time fixing it. The cost of a new one was very affordable and I have always had a high regard for Yamaha’s sound even though I had not owned any thing by them yet. So I bought this receiver. I hooked it up to a sub my son drug home from someone’s curb an 2 tiny jbl’s in front, 2 inexpensive small polk’s in back and a 40 year old small polk speaker for the center. After the set up with the included mike I was stunned by the sound i was getting out of the system. The bluetooth through my phone sounded great. The eq job the receiver did was incredible. It took 6 mismatched speakers and made them sound seamless together. i am impressed.

    Great for the price

Performs very well. One drawback the volume indicator does not start at Zero. Annoying because you think zero would mean mute. Nope. It’s super loud at zero. You have to go into negative numbers to actually mute it.

    Wow!

I tried a few other low-high end receivers that claim to be surround-sound and/or support 5.1 systems but THIS is what I was looking for!The first thing I have to say about the system is, once you get it up and running and figure out how to set it up, its sounds AMAZING! It picks up all those sounds I’d hear with my Sennheiser 598SE’s but have not heard on any system until now. I paired this with Polk’s TL1600’s and the sound is seriously blowing me away.I’m not certain if I “get” all the functions or have it properly setup yet, and I have not yet used the Yaoi (sp?!) thing to have it auto setup, but as it currently stands, after hours of fiddling around and trying to get this setup, as the direction as VERY poor as many others noted. The bad. After threading my wires and screwing them all in, I eagerly wanted to try this system out. I thought I had the right setup at first, but boy was I wrong! The instructions are terrible. Go look for a reddit thread or something because what they send you is very inadequate. It took me a few hours to research and fiddle with things. The on-screen setup is helpful as well. I’m not sure why they made it so difficult to setup a 5.1 optical system. I’ve only owned the system for a day, and much of it was in frustration with this thing. The finger-screws for threading your audio wire through are a BIT too close to each other for my fingers. Threading audio wires through is pretty easy, however.Thats really all there is for cons. Onto pros!Pros! This sounds amazing! Clean, clear, crisp, and other C adjectives about this receiver :)I plan to re-watch LOTR’s tomorrow with this an based on performance thus far I expect to be blown away! I will also likely try that mic-YAOI thing as well.It features a dimmer and panel auto-off ability! I use this in my bedroom, and I despise that everything now has a car-headlight LED which you cant turn off. You can also dim it quite a bit so when you use it in a dark room/during a movie to turn things up a notch, it doesnt blast you with the front panels display! Its like they thought this receiver through or something!! XDA star off for the awful instructions and lack of features that could easily be added to a unit of this price without driving the cost up much if at all. Also, the price jumped up quite a bit from when I was first looking for this unit. Its unfortunate but still a good cost/value item.I like this receiver a lot and its far better than others that I have tried!

    Great receiver, rotten instructions

My old AV receiver decided I only needed stereo anymore, not the 5.1 I bought it for years ago. I did a fair amount of searching and came across this Yamaha RX-V385 and compared it to multiple other units in the same price range. I chose this one for its capabilities and Yamaha’s great historic name. Once received, I set it in place and connected it as I had the previous unit, but was having major problems with the audio for my PS-3 which I use for the Blu-ray. Only after much YouTubing and sorting through ALL the different choices available was I able to gain the desired audio. The manual gave reasonably simple setup instructions, but was totally off base for the specialized input change I needed to make. I’m glad to have that behind me, but my frustration level made this review almost painful to write. I like that the unit is clean and the audio (once I got it set up) is wonderful and clear.I haven’t yet tried the Bluetooth, but suspect it will go without issue. I like that it has banana clip inputs for all 5 speakers, more than I see with most other receivers. I feel this gives a cleaner connection and much easier change-out if needed. The choices I’m finding for sound differences is nice, but I suspect I’ll settle on one or two for each input and be done with it. As it sits, I think it should give me years of good service. My suggestion to Yamaha as well as other Pacific Rim manufacturers is this. Stop having someone from your country translating your thinking process to the English language. Hire someone who is native speaking English (preferably American since most of your products are sold here), who knows proper syntax and the everyday language used by the vast majority of those trying to use your English owner’s manual. You will be far ahead in your thinking, your customer satisfaction and due to that, your sales.

    Sound quality blew me away

I don’t normally write reviews for products, but this sound system has really blown me away and I feel compelled to share my experience. I am so far very pleased with this product.Yamaha is a reputable brand and right off the bat you can trust that you’re receiving a solid product for the price you pay. It’s a costly setup but quality from this brand is on par with what you pay.Setup was easy enough. It took about an hour and a half to get everything unboxed, wires ran, speakers set, etc. The AV receiver is bigger than I thought it would be! Due to the way my room is set up, I anticipated not having enough speaker wire provided in the box and had to use a bit more. Amazon has cheap 16 gauge wire that you can pick up if you have to do some longer runs.Firing up the unit and testing each speaker was easy enough. The magic really happened when I plugged in my devices and started testing different songs, movies, and video games. I’m amazed by the crisp sounds and deep bass this unit can produce. It really feels like you’re at the movies! The surround sound helps video games feel atmospheric. With all the different presets available, you can customize the audio to fit the medium you’re playing. What really blew me away was the subwoofer. I can feel the bass in my chest and it is such a cool feeling. Bass notes are deep and rich, and explosions rattle the room, placing you directly in the action. If you’re looking for a true home cinema setup, look no further than this Yamaha sound system. Don’t cut corners with a sound bar if you can afford it. This thing is the real deal!

    Totally satisfied

I’ve only owned Yamaha Audio gear for 40+ years. The only disappointment is that they fail after about 15 years, which isn’t unacceptable. Component fatigue is a real thing. This RX-V385 replaces our recently broken RX-V367. Hook-up was a snap….our A/V sources all plug into our Samsung Smart TV and it feeds optical audio to the RX-V385. Microphone audio calibration was as simple as plugging in the mic and pressing enter a few times. For Bluetooth, press Bluetooth. Prepare you mobile device for pairing and press MEMORY on the RX’s remote for about 3 seconds and select the RX on your mobile device. The on-screen replication of the Remote’s OPTIONS and SETUP buttons make navigating these menus much easier than using the RX’s front panel display, in particular the PEQ/GEQ. For home surround, this entry-level product is more than enough for the typical user. One last thing…I like a lot of Bass, but my wife doesn’t. The Remote has a button to turn Bass Boost ON/OFF. Pretty slick.

    Top Quality Component

This replaced an older Kenwood 5.1 unit (worked great, just no HDMI capability). I too received a TSR-700 rather than the RX-6VA, and I asked what happened, and buried in the description is a short note that they reserved the right to send whichever was available. Subsequent internet research tells me they are functionally equivalent, and runs about 50-50 on likes/dislikes, so I kept it. For my untrained (and partially deficit) hearing, the sound is excellent. The Kenwood speakers I had connected easily with the analog option of the binding posts, and the unit drives them easily, including the powered base. With a little trial and error, I got my TV, Blu-Ray, a SiriusXM receiver, an old DVD player and an analog phonograph, plus an add-on Yamaha sound bar all connected, although I will admit the remote and the connection choices do not always seem to match. But that may be me expecting something more linear and rational…The display is completely useless from across the room for me, being as small as it is. The TV interface from the AVR and remote can be slow, but Im using wi-fi for the interface, and I may need to hardwire for it between my router, TV and AVR to fix the signal latency. So, a nice AVR, with a moderate learning curve unless you have all Yamaha components with the latest sharing intelligence. Then it might be simple plug-n-play. Im satisfied (although slightly challenged to make it all work more seamlessly than it has so far).

Great sound, not meant for playing loud.

I bought this receiver a while back and had to return it solely due to the lack of output volume it can produce. My fault for assuming the wattage advertised was somehow going to be stronger than expected. I’m a whole clown for thinking that. The sound quality was amazingly awesome, just wouldn’t recommend it if you’re trying to reach movie theater like volumes.

    Easy Hookup

My old $500 receiver died after only 2.5 years (only a 2 year warranty). I was looking for just a simple amp that would do surround sound to hook up to my Tivo box. I had replaced my DVD and CD player with Plex. I purchased a Pyle 7.1 Channel Stereo Amp, but it didn’t work from the start. The YAMAHA was very easy to hook it up and it worked great the first time I used it. It has only been a week, but I am satisfied with the set up. The only draw back is there is no app that will work to operate it without the remote.

It’s entry level but it does it great.

For what it is, an entry level reciver it is great. Haven’t had it long now, about a month but it has been great. Used to own onkyo, pioneer and Harmon Kardon recivers back before HDMI and blu ray. Have used a soundbar for the past few years but finally decided to jump back on a detecated surround system. For my apartment this sounds phenomenal. I don’t normally mess with the DSPs so I can’t comment on those, I prefer direct sound. Could it use more power? Probably but again this is entry level stuff. I use 12 gauge speaker wire on the front 3 speakers and 14 to the surrounds and it sounds great. Front speakers are 6 ohms and rears are 8 but no trouble driving them. Dialog is crystal clear and the overall sound is warm and pleasant. Playback of Blu ray and Ultra blu ray in both DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD is such a treat, absolutely made me realize how limited a soundbar was. Music playback is fantastic, have my laptop with Jriver hooked up through HDMI for playback of FLAC and WAV audio files from 44khz/16bit all the way up to 192khz/24bit with every genre of music. Put it in direct stereo mode and it sounds blissful. DSD playback does work but only at 2.8mhz DSD64 which is still great considering the price. 4K pass through works as it should, no troubles with HDR or Dolby Vision content. Can’t comment on FM or am radio playback. Bluetooth playback is alright, music enhancer does a noticible job of cleaning the music a bit, nothing extreme but does add a cetain clarity. The Bluetooth could have been a more recent standard especially since this reciver came out in 2018 but again entry level. For my Echo it is fine for the rare occasion I send audio to it. Playback of music from LG V60 over Bluetooth sounds okay but wired connection still beats wireless as far as audio is concerned and if you just playing back mp3s AAC, it won’t matter, it works. 4K upscale works fine, really didn’t mess with it too much because TV is normally going to do a better job of upscalling anyway. Has auto HDCP detection which is nice, allows all HDMI connections to play nice. Binding posts with Banna plug compatibility is nice to see at this price. User interface is nice and simple. One area I can see trouble with is the fact you have to go online for the manual. Again, as a entry level reciver there isn’t really much to complain about.

    Great Audio from headphone output

I bought this inexpensive, RX-V385 unit to replace a 12 year old RX-V671 that had stopped working. I have some hearing loss and so I have the RX-V385 connected to the TV Optical Audio output. Using this set-up I can listen to the TV audio through earphones and thus avoid having the speaker sound so loud that it is annoying to family, friends and neighbors. The first thing I noticed after set-up was the earphone audio was much clearer than with the older unit. My wife, who has excellent hearing tried it and said sound was very impressive.

    100% satisfied & fully recommend!!

I bought this theater system for my husband because we had a major issue with sound in our bedroom and both hated it. Before everyone we watched anything the music and action sound would always be too much! And you could barley gear individuals talking during these moment, but could overly hear them without the sound in the background. We tried everything from messing with the sound controls to adding other equipment like a sound bar. Nothing ever worked!!I spent 4 days researching the best home theater systems (not just a sound bar system) for 2019 in December a few weeks before Christmas. After sitting through 100 plus websites and sytems, reading reviews after review, and making sure it met a couple of certain critiria my husband had said he wanted on the next system he bought, such as Bluetooth, the mic sound location, and a sub-woofer (not just a sound bar). I came back to this system over and over again on several different websites. It was Amazon and our Amazon prime that offered the best price and quickest delivery though, so my search was done.3 months later we have zero complaints!! This system has been everything I had spent days looking for and my husband was amazed with his Christmas gift!! He continues to brag about it and tell me what an amazing job I did picking out this Home theater system (which is something he would normally do).We put the mic locator right in the middle of our pillows on our bed (as this is usually where we watch t.v. in the bedroom) and everything we watch and the music we listen to is perfect!! We have no problem hearing people talk in movies or having to keep the remote in hand to turn it up and down when the action is too much, or the voices to low.😂 In fact it’s like we’re at the movies when we watch one, or at a concert when we listen to music. (which is perfectly streamed from every device we have via blue tooth, or smart t.v.) Even the sound from the regular A.M., F.M radio is outstanding!!I can 100% say that I fully recommend this product and trust me you never know what your missing until your watch a movie in bed and it sound like the helicopter on the t.v. is circling around your bed and you can still hear the movie dialogue. I have no complaints at all and Neither does my husband. They only thing that could make this product better is wireless subspeakers, but the wires run around and having to be covered was a small price to pay for this kind of sound perfection.

    Reluctant upgrade turned into amazement.

My old digital 5.1 system has been stored for about 15 years, and I recently acquired a house with a perfect basement room for a home theater.Dusted, cleaned, tested, and repaired my components over months, and got it all working like new again. Speakers are all BIC Venturi, including a 12-inch subwoofer with its own separate 100-watt solid state amp that cost me $500 back in the 1990’s.Happily found out my KLH digital 5.1 receiver still worked great even though it’s probably over 20 years old and doesn’t do HDMI, but then I soon discovered it also wouldn’t decode today’s surround signals. Over time I tried many things like an HDMI audio extractor, but the only surround sound I could get was through broadcast channels using my TV’s optical output. So, my 5.1 receiver works great, but I’m forced to seek a modern replacement anyway. Of course I looked at Denon, Sony, Onkyo, Pioneer, and even Marantz; all for well over $300, and all have many reviews complaining about failure and lack of support. It seems that electronics aren’t made like they used to be, but I had no choice in going way over my budget to buy a possibly risky component. After months of watching deals come and go on Amazon, along with the constantly rising prices, I couldn’t help noticing the Yamaha RX-V385. It’s been out a few years with over 2300 reviews that are slightly more positive than all the rest.5.1, not 7.2 or 7.2.2 or whatever, perfect for my needs. Then I noticed it was available with monthly payments. Sold! I also added a 3-year warranty just in case.Woah, surround sound from everything! PC, Roku Ultra w/Plex Media, Amazon Video, PlutoTV, Roku Channel, you name it. Apparently I had all of the different settings right all along, but the old KLH receiver didn’t know what to do with them. The Yamaha RX-V385 is perfect paired with a 100-inch picture from my Epson EF11 laser projector and all of my BIC speakers. I’m blown away with this setup every time I fire it up, and can’t wait to start showing it off.Haven’t tried bluetooth, not sure if I ever will. Music is played through my PC and Win Media Player, or my cellphone through the front auxiliary jack.Pass-through is great, in fact you can still change video sources through it without it being turned on.Hopefully I’ll get many years of pleasure out of this receiver before the surround signals are outdated again.*This was NOT part of a promotion.*

    Great receiver!

Great receiver that’s easy to setup and has many features. The audio is great, the HDMI a snap, and the controller is quite nice and easy to use. I wish I went with Yamaha years ago. My receiver cabinet is small and enclosed so I put a quiet USB fan in the box to take away some of the heat as the cabinet got to 82 F and ideally you want it lower than 75 F (29 C).

    No complaints at all

It’s been a few weeks. I bought this to replace an old Home Theater in a Box set up, complete with a cheap passive “Subwoofer” that’s wired to sit between the front speakers and the receiver. The old receiver sounded awesome but didn’t support modern codecs like DD+, which means it’s strictly two channel stereo when it came to modern streaming. The V385 is a drop in replacement, having virtually all of the prior system’s inputs, plus 4 HDMI ports.(To wire up the passive subwoofer, BTW, the trick is to tell the receiver there isn’t a subwoofer, and that the front speakers are “big”. The subwoofer should continue to be wired “between” the receiver and the front speakers. Then play something that tests subwoofers – there’s various YouTube results for “subwoofer test” if you can’t find anything.)So what’s good, and what’s not so good?Good:- Audio quality is good. Very good.- Mostly up to date with the exception of the Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats. These aren’t actually needed in a 5.1 system, so it’s not an issue (both standards include a 5.1 track in a form older decoders can use.)- Every speaker seemed as loud as I needed it.- Bluetooth feature is fairly easy to use and a nice way to play music from your phone.- Lots of bells and whistles that can be configured.- Four HDMI ports seemed low but I realized I could use something like B09MM5QT3R (type into search box, there are lots of alternatives!) to automatically switch between devices that aren’t turned on when not in use. So it’s enough in practice, more than enough. Especially if you use eARC, talking of which:- Supports the latest eARC system so you can have your TV switch inputs instead. ARC is a system for having the TV send the audio it’s showing directly to the receiver. It didn’t work well, to the point it wasn’t really an improvement on coax SPDIF, but eARC is the real deal. This can simplify wiring, reduce the number of remotes you need, and… isn’t something I tested as my TV’s too old. Anyway…Not so good:- It would have been easy to set up the speakers if the automated way the manual keeps encouraging people to use was actually an option. Unfortunately it requires a special microphone, which isn’t bundled with the receiver. So you have to read the manual and fiddle with the menus, like some kind of caveman.- Could really do with a front HDMI port for plugging devices in temporarilyThe only reason I can think of why you might not want this receiver is if you want more than 5 surround speakers. But personally I recommend this one.

    Simpler than what it replaced

My last AV receiver lasted a long time, but I did not like who complicated it was. Seemed to offer many “environment” settings, sometimes a source button was inadvertantly pressed and then detective work was required to put it back to what worked. This one is not burdened with too much complexity although I would prune a few more options and buttons off. When I looked around I just saw more and more unneeded complexity. If this one last as well as the last one I’ll be cremated before it dies.

Fantastic deal for a surprisingly good 5.1 system

Nice upgrade from my old analog system. Now I can control my entire entertainment center with just one remote, and it doesn’t even matter which remote. The one for the TV, receiver, and even Fire TV can carry out most functions for most of my components. For reference, I’m running a Cambridge center channel and rear surrounds, Klipsch Reference for the front corners, and a JBL powered sub. I used the included YPAO mic to calibrate them, which was helpful, but I found that this process tended to diminish my rear speakers. So I downloaded a sound meter app to my phone and adjusted each speaker to 75 db. That did the trick. Now, the Dubai chase scene in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol feels like you’re in the middle of a sandstorm with the wind swirling around you and incredible detail in the highs and mids. See also Dash’s jungle chase scene in The Incredibles. Just amazing! This receiver brings action and ambient sound to life in a way I didn’t think was possible in my family room. A great deal. One word of caution. Depending on the size of your room, this might be a little underpowered to drive all five speakers and a sub. Make sure you get a powered subwoofer if you want to use this receiver.

    Nice unit

I’m really happy with this receiver even though I don’t have any speakers hooked up to it. Not using it for a speaker setup might sound like a waste of a product to some people but honestly I’m finding plenty of value in it with it’s other features. The main reason I looked into getting a receiver was so I could have multiple hdmi devices hooked up to my monitor. I looked into hdmi hubs but there are a couple reasons why I’ve chosen a receiver instead.1. Reliability and ease of use. Ok, so like I said I use a monitor in my room, not a tv. Monitors don’t have remotes so anytime I want to change the volume or hdmi input I have to do it manually. It’s a 32 inch monitor about 3 feet to the side of my bed and it’s a nice arms stretch to do so. Not a big deal and while there are plenty of hdmi hubs that offer remote changing or automatic changing I worry about the reliability of those devices. There are plenty of reviews that state their hubs stop working after some months or the automatic hdmi switching starts changing inputs randomly or getting black screens and such. I just didn’t want to hassle with things like that.2. Bluetooth connectivity. This was another feature that I was looking into. Again, there are separate devices that offer this but just like hdmi hubs you will find plenty of reliability concerns. On top of that there’s audio lag and previously when I bought a bluetooth transmitter I had to return it for that reason. Nice thing about this receiver is there is an adjustment for the audio to increase or decrease the audio timing but luckily it isn’t an issue and the audio seems to be timed perfectly with my bluetooth headphones. It pairs up quickly too.I haven’t tried the 4k upscaling with this receiver because I use a 1440p monitor but it’s nice to know that it’s there. Maybe in the future I will find a use for it. There’s also some neat audio presets for things like movies, music and gaming. It’s actually a pretty extensive list. I suppose I should also mention that each hdmi input can be named to your liking for a nice customization feel so when you flip through them you know exactly what’s connected to that input. You can even use the hdmi ports when the unit is in standby mode but you won’t be able to use the bluetooth connectivity. In the end I think this was a good purchase. It’s priced reasonably and I’m getting good use out of it. Sound quality is great and the customizable features are a definite plus. More expensive than getting an hdmi hub and bluetooth transmitter but I think the reliability and extra features make up for this.

    Excellent for surround sound

I love this receiver. First of all, the amp section is class AB which is much smoother and more musical than more common class D amps. The digital processing is excellent in achieving movie theater effects. The best feature is the self calibration with the supplied microphone. Just set the speaker configuration and then let the receiver calibrate the channel balances and frequency responses for them. The results are an excellent, well balanced system. It also has a multitude of specific calibrations but that is too hard and unnecessary. The price is much lower than most other quality amps. I bought two of them.

    Excellent to replace my Sony

I’ve been a Sony person for many years. But, when I helped my parents buy a new receiver I found the Yamaha Receiver and the quality was excellent!! I had to replace mine because mine just didn’t sound as good as my parents. So, I replaced my Sony with this one and the sound quality is amazingly better. Especially the surround sound. More features and options. Easy to set up and I love the on-screen adjustment menus. I did have a problem with using the microphone included to set up the speakers. It wouldn’t pick up the Subwoofer. So, I did that manually. Other than that, everything is great with this receiver.

It does its job for a reasonable price

First, let me say that I’m not an audiophile. I don’t care about post-processing effects, audio zones, or support for various streaming services. I’ve got a decent 5.1 speaker setup and I just want all of my other devices, which include a PS4, a Nintendo Switch, a gaming PC, and a blu-ray player, to play surround sound properly. Before buying this, I had a rats’ nest of splitters and switches chained together in order to switch between all of them, but it never worked as well as I liked, so I decided to buy a proper receiver to handle it. Do note that while the headline for my review says “reasonable price,” that’s only compared to other AV receivers — the mess of cables and boxes I replaced maybe cost $100 all together, and part of me finds it hard to believe that there’s no better solution for my problem that costs less than $550… but similarly-capable receivers only get more expensive than this one.The good news is, it works! Setting everything up was simple; I connected my speakers, plugged all of my devices into the receiver, and plugged the receiver into the TV, and multi-channel audio works with everything. It also has a few other features I didn’t expect to use that I’ve grown quite fond of; it can play music directly from DLNA servers on the local network, and it can play audio both from and to Bluetooth devices. Super handy for when I want to play a game on the TV but listen with my headphones. There are also a bunch of minor issues that add up to me not being 100% satisfied. HDMI eARC support is funky. If eARC is enabled on my TV, then turning on the TV causes the receiver to turn on my PS4, which is not usually what I want. If eARC is disabled on my TV, then turned on the receiver does not turn on the TV, and the TV doesn’t play audio for its built-in apps through the receiver. Turning on one of the consoles does not turn on the receiver, although the receiver does turn on the TV and pass through the A/V signal — except it only passes through stereo audio and not 5.1. The end result here is that I have to manually turn on both the receiver and TV, which is annoying.Second, I would have assumed it would have a separate volume level for every input. It does not. Audio coming from the Switch is louder than the PS4, and audio from DLNA music sources is *much* louder than the Switch. The receiver has an “audio trim” feature that lets you apply a relative adjustment of -6 to +6 dB to each source, but that’s just not enough; I still have to manually adjust the volume level a bit when I switch sources. Why doesn’t it just have a per-input volume setting? The receiver’s IR sensor is also incredibly sensitive to interference. My TV and blu-ray player have never had a problem, but if there’s another IR source such as a remote control or even the sun coming through a nearby window, the receiver just doesn’t respond to inputs at all. It took me several days to figure this out; I almost returned my receiver as defective before I discovered I just had to make sure every other IR source was blocked. It’s also much larger than I was expecting. I’ve since learned that apparently this is just a standard size, but as I’ve said, I’m not an audiophile; I look at the electronics in this box and see that it could easily be half, maybe even a quarter of its size if they tried to make it as small as possible. It just doesn’t need to be this big.For me, this is basically just a glorified A/V switch for my TV, and it does what I need it to do. It has enough caveats that I can’t give it a wholehearted recommendation, but so far it’s still the best solution I’ve found.

    Love my Yamahas

RX 385 replaces my much-loved 10 year old RX 375, which I inadvertently fried while experimenting. The 385 has some newer features, including bluetooth. The old model and this both use the handy YPAO function to tune the audio speakers’ depth of field to the listening environment. It’s a broadcast mic that you just plug into the front of the receiver for a few seconds to determine each speakers’ distance from viewer. Kind of a sonic echo measurement of seating to speaker. It’s a foolproof, remarkably clever, timesaving gizmo. The YPAO mic is absolutely included with this unit, looks like a little plastic cone. Also important to me, Yamaha has replaced the old spring clips for rear/side speakers, which are now the better screw and cap posts, as they have always been for the two front speakers.I recommend rocketfish HDMI 4k/8k cables to connect this receiver to your tv and to whatever other components you want, such as a bluray. Sound quality is excellent if your speakers are good. (I like KEFs.)Of course you may prefer wireless speakers, but I’m already committed to wired ones. I used rocktfish banana plugs to connect my speaker wires to the RX 385 receiver’s speaker posts. Neat and clean. With a choice of 2 front, 2 rear, 1 center speaker, plus one coaxial plug in for a subwoofer, your movies and programs are going to sound far more detailed and staged than you’d get from the tv or a sound bar. It’s a more immersive and compelling experience. (I use only 2 fronts and 2 rears and don’t feel I’m missing anything.)Yamaha receivers and other components are my favorites: relatively inexpensive, well designed, solidly built, and not fussy to install. If you find yourself in a pickle there are a couple of helpful youtube videos.I find with the RX385 again that Yamaha does not disappoint me.

Works Like a Boss So Far

I just got this thing yesterday on Sunday. I know, I can’t believe Amazon ships on Sunday!! Thanks Amazon Prime!!I I seriously hate waiting a week to two weeks for my products when ordering online, so I usually just go to the store and buy my products. Amazon Prime is the best thing since white rice. Amazon prime is like not having to deal with your mother in law, because she lives far away : )Oh sorry folks, I forgot I was writing a review on a receiver. LOL.When I was looking over the dimension specs I was concerned that the unit would not fit in the opening of my TV stand due to the height. Based upon the specs, the unit looks like it will barely fit in height. The length and depth of the unit was no problem. My TV stand requires 6″ of height clearance in the slot where the receiver goes. This is due to a wood trim piece in front, but once that piece is cleared I have 6-1/4″ of clearance. The Amazon site says this unit is 6″ tall, so I figured I can just angle the receiver into the opening to clear the front wood trim piece. You might be asking why I don’t just remove the front wood trim piece and then put it back? Because it’s a fancy ornate piece that is glued and mortised into the sliding wood platform, therefore removing and re-installing it would be a bit*h. I decided to take a chance and ordered the receiver. When the unit arrived the retail box was boxed into an Amazon box to avoid damage. I like that they packaged the unit that way, because I like to keep my retail boxes on electronics items. It’s easier to pack electronics back into their original boxes to avoid damage when I move.I removed the receiver from the retail box and checked for physical damage and scratches and everything looked kosher. So I tried to angle the receiver into the TV stand opening and it just wouldn’t work. I needed 2 mm more of clearance, which I didn’t have. Dilemma, dilemma. Do I return the receiver and look for a smaller height receiver? I really wanted this Yamaha receiver, because it has bluetooth, YPAO syncing, USB, and HDMI connectors. Plus all the speakers inputs in the back take banana plug connectors, which I really like for convenience and not having to deal with the cheap spring clip connectors and oxidation of copper wires. Note: Don’t use the silver cheap thin sub woofer wire that comes in the box when you buy your self-powered sub woofer. Spend a few $$s and get the Media Bridge or Monster Cable gold plated cable instead. I didn’t want to have to downgrade my receiver due to the height issue, so I found an awesome alternative!!Tip the receiver upside down and you will see four black plastic pieces used as the feet for this unit. The feet are secured by some small Phillips screws. I removed the feet, because they were too tall. Then I went to Wal-Mart to their hardware department to look for some alternative feet that were not as tall. I was going to go to Depot, but they close at 8 pm on Sundays. I found a package of clear furniture feet for $1 that are smaller in height, but about the same size in the other dimensions to the original Yamaha feet. I used a 1/8″ drill bit to drill a hole in the center of the furniture feet and screwed them into the receiver with the Phillips screws. Then tried to fit the unit in the TV opening and guess what? The receiver fits like a champ!! If you remove the factory feet remember that you need to replace them with something else to elevate the unit. There are vents at the bottom of the receiver and there has to be some clearance, so heat can dissipate from the receiver. Initial impressions are good and everything works so far. I’ll update if I run into any issues with this new edition Yamaha receiver.Update Aug 2018: I was listening to this thing after setting up the YPAO and thinking that the sound was not very good or loud. Plus the subwoofer was not putting out bass in sync with the speakers and the bass sounded muddy low. I called Yamaha tech support and they helped me set up the receiver correctly. They had me press and hold the “straight” button, while pressing and holding the power button to re-set the unit back to factory specs. Note: This will erase all your radio presets, so make sure you write them down so you can input them back in again. So forget this YPAO nonsense and go into the receiver settings screen. The standard default is 8 ohms for your speakers, but all my speakers are 6 ohms. So I had to change the on screen setting to 6 ohms, because there is no switch on the back of the unit like on the older Yamaha receivers. Then apparently in the settings menu, you have to change left front, right front, center speaker, and rear speakers to the “small” setting and the sub woofer setting to “Use.” Then there are individual speaker volume settings for each speaker that have to be turned up from the factory low settings. Somewhere in the settings I was told to set the cut off point at 80 hz (THX industry standard) and select “Normal Phase.” You have to flip the switch on your amp sub woofer box to normal phase also. Also, the -db volume control was so annoying. When I increase the volume the negative db shows up and apparently the numbers head toward zero as you turn the volume knob to the right. So, I changed that setting to increase the numbers instead of the -db. Then I played some Taylor Swift- Style (don’t B judging me) and adjusted the amp sub woofer bass volume to equal my two front speakers and set the cut off frequency at 80 hz. Now everything sounds copacetic and my amp sub woofer really kicks!! I have attached a pic of how to get the blue tooth working, because that was a bit*h to set up and not intuitive.March 2019 Update:This thing still works like a champ!! One cool feature I found is that if you get your ipad or ipod, then go to the bluetooth screen and turn on the bluetooth, and then select the Yamaha receiver; that the bluetooth signal will automatic power on your Yamaha receiver. Click that helpful tab if this info was awesome for you : )

Amazing sound, wonky setup and remote, MusicCast app saves the day!

The Yamaha RXv4a sounds wonderful. It’s powering B&W Cdm 7s with absolutely no strain and any volume level. Clarity and stereo separation is excellent, better that the Music Hall 70.2 (something like that) it replaced. The back panel offers no surprises, all inputs and outputs are clearly marked and where you would expect them. The front panel controls are great, basically a large volume control, a smaller multifunction knob for input select and tuning. I find the receiver to be visually attractive.BUT…the overall setup is truly inscrutable. You really need it connected to a monitor or TV to view the menus. The menus and submenus are not very logically defined, at least to my mind. There is an odd delay between pressing set up on the remote and the receiver response which is quite confusing…I thought. the thing was defective. There are predefined “scenes” you can choose, although no where can I find the actual definitions of them. There are preset audio scenarios, although it is thought for me to find them when I want to play with them. Overall it seems like a lot to have to learn just to listen to some music or watch TV.Don’t get me started on the remote. It is the absolute worst I have ever encountered. The buttons are so tiny they hurt my fingers, especially after the long, exhausting set up experience.Tech support is friendly, but they seem frazzled and frustrated. It seemed as thought they had so many quirky products to support that it was difficult for them to answer basic questions. And kinda hard questions are just ignored, like why does the Yamaha receiver not power off my TV, but my TV can control the power on the receiver? But a redeeming feature is Music Cast. It is pretty easy to use and there is lots of great internet audio content available. It is a lot like Sonos, but you get to use your own audio equipment.

    RX-V6A 7.2-Channel AV Receiver ++++!

Lets start with shipment, all was ok, the only delay was having to be in person to sign for the package. UPS missed me twice, left a return date note and on next business day, was able to sign for unit delivery. Everything was new in box, all items stated were included. Now comes the setup, well, having only an “easy” setup flyer (no user guide), one would think it would be easy — uh no. I would of rated my overall experience a 5 start, yet, had to find and download the User manual only after hours of trying to determine what was causing audio “stutter” with local TV or streaming app. Contacted Yahama Tech Support by chat, was told by chat support, a tech would contact me within 24 to 48 hours. I did ask the online chat support to expedite and within 2 hours, a tech support call came. Within 15 minutes, the patient Tech support guy systematically helped to troubleshoot the issue. I had a separate local antenna tuner with HDMI connected to HDMI port of TV and the AV unit HDMI (eArc) out cable connected to Vizio 55E1 (eArc, HDMI 1) port at the same time. Tech asked for me to switch local tuner cable from TV to HDMI port 1 of AV unit. Retested audio – no stutter. Thank you Yamaha Tech support. Some would say it is obvious to connect a separate TV tuner to HDMI port of AV unit, not so obvious without a solid User guide. The AV unit remote is ok, the only criticism is the left/top/right/down buttons used to navigate through the onscreen menu is sub-par (not wide enough), often when trying to scroll the setup menu, the large middle round select button is pressed since the width of the menu selector keys is too thin. At least double the width selector keys is suggested to Yahama. The overall sound quality, performance and power is great. I recommend this unit for those who want a GREAT AV unit for the price point and excellent Tech support. I have JBL Studio2 and Klipsch (front/center/subwoofer) – AMAZING!!

    Great sound and good functions

So, I’ve had this amp for a few weeks now. It works great and delivers excellent sound. After you get it out of the box and set up, you’ll want to use the included mic to calibrate your listening space. But what you’ll also want to do is go into the sound settings and then into the equalizer and make the tonal adjustments that suit your listening tastes. This is a feature I thought using the YPAO auto calibration technology would take care of, but it didn’t.So, everything sounded quite ‘flat’ and neutral with no good highs or lows until I made the eq adjustments. So, I think my biggest gripe with this amp (and I guess this might apply to other amps also) is the speaker connections!! They suck!! Connecting speaker wire to the terminals on the back of this amp is NOT easy. There is only a small notch near the base of each terminal in which to push the wire in to make the contact, and that open notch is NOT easy to see. That being said, I would strongly advise using the option of banana plugs to just plug into the connectors instead.Would I buy this amp again if I had it to do over? Yes, I would. However, it would be nice if the amp had a more flexible option for equalization and tone control. But you can expect only so much for $279 (the price I paid when I bought it). It’s a nice amp with good features and good sound. So, an ‘update’ regarding the Surround Sound configuration. To anyone who is having problems setting up their surround sound, the last piece of the puzzle I discovered is that even though the amp was set to ‘surround,’ and I had connected speakers to the ‘surround’ terminals,It is necessary to go into the settings and then go into ‘HDMI Control’ and set it to ‘On’ (assuming it isn’t already set to that. Mine wasn’t.).Once I did that, the surround feature started working as it should.
