Excellent dash cam but needs a little improvement

I purchased 2 of these cameras (amazon B074JT3698) approx 2 years ago. They stay in the car all the time and I have to say they have been really great. They turn on and record every time the car starts, rain or shine. The hot Florida weather has had no effect on their performance. The videos are really clear.I had an issue with one of the cameras last month and Rove customer support went above and beyond to get it resolved. They were great.I wired the front camera into the cars power system because we have had some issues with people messing with the cars at night. I have to say that feature needs some improvement.I pulled all of the videos in one 24hr. period and looked through all of them. This what I found.Total videos in 24hrs – 268Videos picked up by the motion detector – 255Videos with objects triggering the video – 203total videos with nothing in the video to indicate movement – 123 (most of them at night)Videos triggered by rain on the windshield – 29Of the 255 videos recorded by the motion detector including the ones triggered by the rain, about 65% shows nothing that should have been recorded. Most of them were at night.I have looked at other days that show a high number of motion detected videos that show nothing but clouds moving. No other movement is seen.Another issue with the motion detected recording is with people walking in front of the car. From about 10 feet away they are not detected until they are almost directly in front of the car.Over all I think these cameras are really great and I would not hesitate to buy them again. On the road the videos are clear and the cameras work perfectly. On videos with bright glaring sun a polarizing filter would be helpful. Parking mode works just as expected. The only issue I have with the cameras are the motion detection feature. That is all done via the software and I think there is a lot of room for improvement in that area.

Great Camera, Poor Support for Firmware Update

This is the third R2-4K we’ve purchased. The cameras work great, video is excellent quality and will download to your mobile device through the Rove app. You can also pull the video card and download directly from the card to a Mac or PC. I have had a lot of trouble connecting my iPhone 13 to this camera, but the ones we purchased almost 2 years ago connected with no problem. The manual informs you that you can download any available firmware updates from the app, but the Firmware Update button that it refers to isn’t there. I accessed the Rove website, had to scroll all the way to the bottom to find a link labelled downloads. From there it took several minutes to find out you cannot download the updates, you have to email their Customer support with the cameras firmware version number. I did that and received a reply also asking for the camera’s serial number. Not a straight-forward process at all!

An Excellent Replacement For My 8-1/2 Year Old One That Died.

I had to remove a dash camera that failed after only 9 Days of use. (My first replacement for my 8-1/2 year old dash camera.) This second dash camera is the one I should have purchased instead of the other one that failed. However, to find it, I had to dig hard to find it. It took me almost an hour to find it and others like it. However, finding it was what I was determined to do.I had no idea this brand existed but, I did not want more of the same thing, with regard to last dash camera of nine days. This dash camera comes with a plethora of settings! It even has video lens distortion correction which, I turned on in the settings to make the video look more normal.I reviewed my daytime and nighttime clips. I also purposely did not clean the fog from the dashboard out-gassing that is on my windshield to see how it would deal with it. The view was stunning! It appeared that the out-gassing fog was not there! Only in certain lighting situations, like the light fluctuations caused by dark shadow, then bright sun, dark shadow, bright sun, did it appear that windshield had a problem. When the sun came through, it would dramatically flash on screen. The camera very!, quickly recovered and then had to change for the dark shadow. It worked extremely well in this unusual situation.Nighttime vision is equally impressive. Everything is clear and visible. Headlights and taillights do not lens flair which, would cause a blind moment. The oncoming headlights are clear but, greatly reduced somehow without loss of other nighttime detail that could be crucial to a nighttime accident investigation. License plates are clear and easy to read day or night! The speed reporting function is extremely accurate! While driving, I called out my speed at various times in my trip. When reviewing the footage, the speed I called out from my speedometer, was the same speed on the dash camera. That is critical information in an accident investigation.Installation was quick and reasonably easy for someone who is capable of doing this kind of work. The provided orange color cosmetic tool for hiding the wire run is great! My Nissan Altima has one really tough spot that, without this tool, is impossible for hiding the wire run. So, all that to say, the wire is completely hidden except where it has to come out so it can connect to the dash camera. Even so, while driving, it is never seen and the look is very professional. I am keeping that tool for any other wiring projects I may have in the future. A really nice and welcomed tool!So far, with only two days of use, I am really, really satisfied with this dash camera! If it lasts 8-1/2 years like my first one, or longer!, I will be very happy and willing to buy another one when that time comes.

Similar but slicker than KDLinks X1

I bought one of these as a replacement for a 5 year old KDLinks X1 that had served me well until recently, when after witnessing an accident I discovered that not only had it failed to record the accident, but the video had become foggy and inferior. I was going to buy another KDLinks but didn’t find anyone offering the X1 type anymore. The Rove camera is basically an upgraded version of the X1. 1. GPS is built-in, not an add on – found satellites immediately once installed in my car, and time/date information can be taken directly from the GPS rather than having to be manually set; 2. As might be expected from its more recent vintage, it can achieve much higher resolution than the X1; 3. You don’t need a refresher every time you have to access the interface; 4. You can use your cell phone to view the camera’s video files via wifi.If you’ve owned the KDLinks X1 dash cam, you will find this one’s interface far easier and more intuitive. I found that out in fiddling with it before installing it in my car. Virtually every useful feature and associated settings present for the X1, plus a few more, are duplicated on the Rove (loop recording, auto turn on, etc), even the same three modes (recording, stills, and playback). It also has a parking mode for those who need a camera that activates if their parked car gets banged into. If it holds up as well as my KDLinks did, it’s a winner. The unit comes nicely packaged, with car USB adapter, a long USB cable, a short USB cable, a plastic wedging tool for pushing the long cable between windshield glass and vinyl surround, stick on cable guides if that’s your bent, a mount with stick-down pad for surface mounting, and a well-designed suction mount for windshield mounting. Unlike the X1, the Rove requires a USB micro plug, not a USB mini plug. The unit is set up to auto start in recording mode when you turn your car on, and turns off shortly after you turn the car off (settings you can change if you wish). A modest internal battery maintains settings, providing a few minutes of play back if it comes to that. You have to supply your own SD card. The manual recommends using a new card with the camera, and specifically recommends you use a brand name SD card (class 10, U3 or higher), and Samsung in particular. The notes interestingly say to absolutely avoid Sandisk cards and after market cards. The 128Gb Samsung card I purchased to go with the camera added about $24 to the cost. The Rove can handle cards up to 512Gb.I should also note how the wifi and GPS player work. For wifi, my phone uses the Rove Android app. You turn wifi on/off for the camera by press and hold the emergency lock button in the bottom center (the button’s primary function is emergency lock). For Android go to settings/connections to connect your phone’s wifi to the Rove camera. I found that totally transparent. The app itself is a bit less transparent, but when you open it, it brings up the phone display. Tap the folder icon and select the video you want to view and play it. You can do the usual vertical or horizontal, upload it from the camera, etc. That all worked for me once I got past the confusion factor of the app’s red button for turning record on/off. I could see the wifi feature being quite useful if you need to show a cop a larger video than what the camera screen provides. Incidentally, my phone auto connects to my home wifi, and when I killed wifi on the camera my phone immediately reconnected to my home wifi as it should. As for the GPS app, you go to the Rove web site to download it (it’s under the downloads tab). It installs as a .exe file. I’m using Win 7 on an older machine and at first it didn’t work. I queried Rove help and received a reply almost immediately letting me know I probably just needed to install the “K-lite” codec. They supplied the codec download site (which you can Google for) and provided the following install instructions:1. Please download the K Lite Codec Pack and run the .exe file (if there’s a prompt to download the new version please select NO)2. Installation Mode: Normal and hit Next3. Preferred Video Player: Something else Preferred Audio Player: Something else and hit Next4. Do not change anything on the settings and hit Next until you see the option to Install6. Once done, please click Finish.Worked like a charm (fantastic customer service!). The app itself is slick … you just load up the files from the SD card that you want to view and it plays them, visually showing both your GPS data and path on Google maps.

    Big fan!

I never understood the importance of this until this year when I had so many issues with my car. I was having issues with my new neighbor which resulted in my tires being slashed. The whole thing got me so scared that I felt the need to install one of these onto my car for safety while driving around. I live in a predominately Asian community and they are terrible drivers. I feel more secure having this since this will have my back. The only thing can complain about is the sticky holders for the cord. It worked well on the glass but not on the dashboard. It isn’t sticky enough for it to stay on so the long cord gets in the way

Don’t expect much from the 4K resolution

First of all, I should make it clear that I’m satisfied with this unit. It does what I need it to. The included accessories are good. The built-in GPS works well. But the product does have some problems.I’d recommend against this camera if 4K is what you’re really after. Although this camera supports 4K video, it only does so at 24 frames per second, which is fine for an old movie but not for a dash cam. It does some variants of “2K” at 30fps, which is okay as far as smooth motion goes, but the quality is not a great leap above that obtained at 1080p (discussed below)—and at 1080p you can record at 60fps, so that’s what I use. It does that job well.Testing the various resolution modes against my house number sign as a license plate simulacrum, I found that at the distance where the numbers become illegible at 1080p, they’re also illegible in both 2K modes and the 4K mode as well. I don’t know for certain, but I suspect the higher res modes are captured at 1080p and upscaled, and there’s no real extra detail captured. Real life driving tests confirm that the higher res modes don’t meaningfully increase the distance at which plate numbers are legible, and the low 24 frames per second of the 4K mode is—charitably—hard to watch. To defuse any suggestion that the SD card is to blame for that, I got the SD card recommended by the manufacturer, and the outputted video is definitely 24 fps as confirmed by the MediaInfo software (and manually going frame by frame as I checked the quality). As mentioned above the added smoothness of 60fps at 1080p is worth a lot more than the maybe/maybe-not resolution of the higher modes.I can’t really speak to the night capabilities of the camera because I almost never drive at night. I really should give that a try and update the review. EDIT: Last night I drove at night in and out of a strong rainstorm, and I can say that the video quality was surprisingly good! The UI is serviceable but it’s not going to win any awards. I have it set to go into screensaver mode after a minute, where it shows your speed rather than the video feed. But sometimes the screen goes black and I’m not sure if it’s recording or not. There’s a tiny red LED that blinks, which is presumably telling me it is, in fact, recording, but I have to move my head in order to look down the little hole it’s in to be able to see it. I’m still not used to the buttons; when I want to view the camera feed from the screensaver mode, I inevitably hit the wrong button and stop recording either outright or by mistakenly going into the menu. The battery-only parking mode seems okay, but it turns the camera on at any motion. If you bring the camera inside at night or whatever, it’ll start recording your hand or pocket. You have to go into the menu and through several pages to turn the feature off. And then do the same to turn it on again the next day.As to the accessories, they seem fine. The suction cup is well-made and has given me no problems at all. The included USB power cable is long enough to route around however you want. The inclusion of a two-port USB power adapter is a nice touch, and leaves you with a free power port when the camera is connected. What’s very strange is that the camera is powered by a Mini USB port—not Micro USB. I haven’t seen a Mini USB port in a new product in years. That unusual enough to be somewhat worrying. One accessory I think they should’ve included is a mini-HDMI to fullsize HDMI adapter. If you plan on reviewing video on your TV, you’ll need one. I had one laying around from a Raspberry Pi but I suspect most people won’t have one.The app and WiFi mode. Though the camera has built-in WiFi, it apparently only works in peer-to-peer ad-hoc mode with a phone running the app. That’s a strange way of doing it. I’d be much more useful if you could join a WiFi network and access the video through a lightweight web interface, or even FTP. And it would be really neat if you could watch the camera feed over the network. But nope, you have to use the phone app and, as with all of these kinds of apps, it’s not great. I’ve only used it twice. It’s just a lot easier to plug the camera into a computer and get the video files off that way. Presumably one can plug the camera into one’s phone with a USB-to-Go adapter but I haven’t tried that. Before purchase, I figured the 4K capability was a gimmick more than anything, and I’d decided against this camera in favor of another similarly-priced unit which had a rear camera too. But then Prime Day came along and this camera was considerably cheaper (it was $80 with tax) than my first choice (still over a hundred). The other camera I was looking at also didn’t have built-in GPS, but instead had a $25 GPS addon (is it 2021 or 2001?), so the included GPS of the Rove unit was also an influence. I don’t regret the purchase at all, it does what I need and does it pretty well. All that said, I don’t think it’s a worth its normal price of $120.

Excellent dash cam w/ good support for a great price

After reading many reviews, we decided on this dash-cam as a good performer for the price. Delivery was very fast, and it was easy to set up. I had one installation question, and the company replied within 12 hours. It is very easy to install, and I had it working within perhaps 15 minutes. I did not route the wire around the headliner as it is very tight (2021 Audi Q5), but I hardly notice the cord. I mounted the camera to the right of the rear-view mirror, essentially out of the driver’s view. Based on comments from other users, I purchased a Samsung 256 Pro Plus, which so far has worked well. I may order an additional windshield mount so I can switch it from car to car. It connects fine with my phone, but note that you do NOT want to connect to the dash-cam WiFi unless you are downloading videos. I know some dash-cams also have rear-viewing cameras, but for the money, this one seems about perfect.

BEST Dash Cam I Have Ever Used!

I have tried MANY dash cams in my cars over the years but this one is a winner! I was skeptical at first because of some negative reviews, BUT Amazon had a Lightning Deal with $40 off the regular price! A win win! First off, this is an UPDATED Dash Cam with actual 3840 4K, and usb-C connector!!!! The NEW Firmware was already updated on this model!! It also has the Super Capacitor instead of a battery in previous model. Since I saved $40 I did purchase the Rove 256GB memory card to make sure I wouldn’t have any recording issues like most described! The Voice Guidance makes it amazingly simple to navigate the setting setup! GPS is a Great feature and the Phone APP Makes this a huge WINNER!!!! You can check or change Camera setting on your phone!!! I also love the ONE YEAR Warranty from Rove with this Dash Cam! You can’t lose with this purchase! I am sold on this Dash Cam! Update: A recent review said when they needed to view an accident but it did not record anything for a while! Maybe loop recording was set to off? Choose either 1-min, 3-min, 5-min. This will allow loop cycle function to be turned ON and it will keep recording over and over. Also there is a camera formatting notification setting? Maybe this is if your loop recording is set to off??

Good for the money, battery/capacitor wears out in 16 months

Now buying my 3rd unit. Like clockwork, the capacitor ( battery ) will die in about 13-16 months of heavy use. It’s non replaceable (I’ve tried) this ONLY effects your settings. So if time/day stamp is critical (like myself) once that dies you have to adjust your settings every single time it fires up. That’s a pain. But if the timestamp doesn’t matter to you then the unit is fine.Picture quality is good. I personally use the 1080P 60fps setting for smoother video capture. (i use the footage in my vlogs) as i find the 2160P to be micro jittery, although very clear.I live in the southwest United States. The unit holds up to the extreme heat of 110+ ambient and upwards of 150+ F when in direct sunlight on windshield. The suction cup gets weak after 6 months and when the heat expands the air inside it, it makes it separate and fall from the windshield. Best to use the sticky mount. Will use my old unit as a rear facing cam now for incident security.

It works, for the most part, but has some issues.

The camera works. It defaults to 1080P and I have not tried any other resolutions. Because of the problems with resolutions and video players, I’m not sure I want to.The menus and the buttons are difficult. You simply cannot see what a button is for. Maybe if they paint the inscription on the button in white, it might be easier to see.You will need to take the manual with you in order to use the device for anything but the defaults. It is not intuitive. The GPS takes 2 to 3 minutes to find a satellite when it first starts. If you get a traffic ticket within that time, you will not be able to prove your speed. Sometimes it loses the signal and the MPH goes to zero. That did not happen often, but it does happen. This is important to me because I bought this camera to prove my innocence if I get ticketed. I just received a ticket for going 59 in a 45. I was actually going 54 in a 55. I will fight the ticket because I took pictures of where I was. I did not have a dash camera, though, to be able to prove my speed. Hence, why I bought one. Having the speed recorded is paramount. I have lost trust in state troopers. The PC software (That needs to be downloaded) did not work on my computer. I sent them an email (about 24 hours ago) and received no response. I did not try the phone number. Their Car DV software shows a blank white screen for the video. After it did not work, I uninstalled it. However, I also found that it also installed k-lite codecs. Do know that will happen. They can be uninstalled, however.I later tried Windows Movie Maker with the files it created and it too had a problem. After tinkering around, I found that if you generate a file at a specific resolution, you will need to change your PC’s display resolution to match it. Furthermore, you should not change the text size for your display settings, as that messes it up too. Therefore, their Car DV PC software might work under the same conditions, but I did not try to reinstall it.I did not download and install the phone app after reading that it requires all permissions to the phone. Not going to happen. Therefore, having wireless and a phone app are useless to me now. I could have saved money with another camera. When the camera is in screen saver mode during recording, in order to take a snapshot, you need to press the start button twice; once to enable the screen and the next to take a picture. I did not like that because it takes my hand from the steering wheel for too long and a snapshot needs to be taken instantly or it is useless. They need a better way to take a snapshot with the screen saver on. If you forget to edit a video to capture a frame, then the video file could get overwritten. The up and down adjustment for the car mounts have indents for set angles. I wanted something in-between two of them, but that is not possible. Oh well. After reviewing the video, it should not be a problem because there is enough coverage. As I was typing this review, the support person sent an email to attempt to correct the problem with the Car DV software. He thinks it is a codec issue and wants me to do an uninstall of their software and codecs, and then install a codec package from another location. I think I’ll pass on that for now. I’ve read about problems with free codec packages. I’m thinking this problem may be an issue with all cameras and video editors. Others can chime in.I should note that Windows Media Player plays the video fine regardless of display resolution settings. That software has no editing capabilities, though. But what it does show, is that the video editing applications have problems. The camera appeared to be stable enough on the windshield with the suction cup. It did bounce slightly on bumps, but I think any camera will. Generally, it was stable. Turning the camera to face a side window also requires moving it down to get the angle correct. The camera did get slightly warm, but I think that will be the case with most cameras from what I have read.I purchased a Samsung 128GB EVO Plus micro-sd card and it works fine. They require you to format it in the camera before using it. That is standard procedure. It worked and does not take long. In other words, it is a quick format and not a complete format. Good enough. The video is slightly choppy, and sometimes stutters, but not terribly so. I’m not making videos for advertising, so it is not an issue. I have no other dash cams to compare it to, so it might be the way they all are.It came with two USB power cables and a car power adapter. One cable is short and one is long. That is good. I wish they would mount the usb connector for the camera in the other direction so the cable goes downward straight instead of going upward first. That makes the cable bend and might possibly make it to pop out eventually because of road bumps. It came with a suction mount and a sticky tape mount.All-in-all, it is okay, with some quirks. Based on my use, I would have preferred to pay less, but the unit will probably serve its purpose, other than instant snapshots. If I want to edit, I either need to get their software working, or go out and purchase editing software. Unless I get a traffic ticket that I do not deserve, or somebody hits my car, I should not need to do that.Update: Having been in IT support, I periodically look through my computer processes to see if there is anything strange. I found two scheduled tasks with cryptic names that were tied to the Car DV player software directory. Only, I had uninstalled that software on a prior day. Hmmm? Not good. Took another star off for that. When I had installed this software, I noticed that it kept executing a CMD.exe to start the program from there. Odd. The Car DV player is suspect in my opinion. I had run an antivirus on it, but AV program can’t catch everything. I do not plan on reinstalling this program.

    very good camera

I’ve had this camera for 2 weeks. so far so good. it only takes an hour to get familiar with the settings, buttons, features, etc. The app that goes with it works flawlessly for me (android 13 on a motorola 5g).videos are easily accessed and playable through the app. Aftermarket 64GB TF card class 10 works just fine.

Quality product at a good price point

I love the speed, time and GPS is right on the screen, and on the video. GoPro could take a lesson here.I’d love to see vibration dampening added, that’s one plus for GoPro, and why I use a Hero 8 on my motorcycle.10/10 recommended

Great Product, and Even Better Customer Service!

I bought this product in Jan 2020 to outfit my new car with the protection of always having a camera on. Little did I know that living in New York City, my car would sit for many months in the same spot, and I wouldn’t have the use of the car and this camera while we dealt with CV19.In the little bit I was able to use it, as well as friends/family that borrowed the car, it was great. Anyone that used it said it was super easy to use, and it help them feel more comfortable knowing that everything around them was being documented, in amazing color mind you.Come Feb 2021 the camera did come up with some recording errors, and as an electrical engineer I know things happen. When I reached out to the manufacturer, I was met with prompt responses, clear troubleshooting techniques that would help determine what the issue was. Was it the memory card, or the unit, etc. was the question, and with their clear steps I was able to establish that somehow there was a problem internally, and it needed to be serviced. When asked for proof of purchase, it was seamless, and I provided that information. The response I got was that the manufacturer noticed that the warranty had technically expired a few months earlier. I initially responded with what I would classify as “inappropriate rage” that they were claiming it was out of warranty, clearly upset….after I sent my email response I read their full response and I was so in the wrong, yes they pointed out that it was out of warranty, but they offered to make an exception for me this one time and replace the unit for free with a brand new one, at no cost to me.So I embarrassingly responded again apologizing for my last email yelling at them, and I was met with only a wonderful response that they absolutely understood, no worries on my initial response, and they would still be happy to replace the unit. They even went so far to provide a “cross ship” of the camera after I provided the tracking number of the unit being sent to them, without even asking for a credit card or anything, they did that with what I consider the respect of a customer’s word that they were sending it back.I received the replacement unit literally 3 days after I sent back my unit, that was only received 1 day earlier to them, and it works again perfectly. I think they even sent the newer model, which has even better images (if possible) from the initial unit. On top of that, they also sent me a follow-up email asking if the new unit was working properly and if they could do anything else to help provide more service to me.As an electrical engineer, I get things happen, and I don’t think it was flaw in the quality of the product, rather a victim of circumstances sitting in a hot car for a year un-used. The real gem here, is their customer support. They stayed calm, dealt with me being rude to them, only had one thing in mind which was to provide me, their customer, with the best support. And they did exactly that, and on so many levels I would just say that they should serve as a model for what customer service is lacking these days, because they truly were amazing and provided me with support, even outside of their legal requirements of their warranty, they truly just want me to be happy with their product! So please, yes, buy this unit if you are looking for an amazing camera and want great support with any issues. Giving them 5 stars, would give them more if possible, and speaking as not only a consumer, but an electrical engineer, this is the product you want to buy!

    Really wanted to like this…

I looked at a lot of 4K dashcams and the Rove seemed to have the best feature set, stylish looks and at a reasonable price point. I was looking to replace my Garmin Dashcam 20 which has a max resolution of 1920×1080 @ 30fps. The video quality was always very good with the Garmin but I craved more resolution. Garmin has no 4K offering, so I was willing to give Rove a chance, but I am sadly disappointed. Here’s the reasons I’ll be returning…Cons:* I first set up all the settings (resolution, audio, gps, time, date, mph, etc). After setting all that up, I went to the Rove website and find they’ve released a firmware update! Fantastic I thought and updated only to find all the settings I just entered reverted to defaults.* If you buy a 4K dashcam, show of hands of all those who would like to run it in something less than 4K? Me neither. All the still photos you see in these other reviews are from people running the camera in less than 4K resolution (they are probably running at 1920×1080 @ 60fps). Problem is at full resolution the unit shoots 24fps. I didn’t realize how big a difference 24fps is from 30fps or 60fps. It really is a BIG deal. Pausing the video during play back yields practically useless still frames if looking for license plates, etc.* Due to wide angle of lens, there can be a slight ‘fish-eye’ effect. Some manufacturers allow for the compensation of this effect through menu settings. I couldn’t find any such setting on this unit (or its app).* It may seem a small detail, but the USB power port is oriented so that the power cord goes UP and then has to bend over to go down to the car’s 12V adapter. A design oversight that puts additional strain on the cabling/unit.* Annoying – The camera gives you the option of 1 big video file or splitting it into 3, 5, 10 minute clips. The timer on the screen counts the minutes of each clip, not the entire trip. I would often use my Garmin’s total time running as a trip timer – not with the Rove.. you’re X minutes into a 3 minute clip. Not very helpful.* The unit has a shock sensor that even at the lowest setting was constantly tripping the protected file lock. If you live in a city with pot holes or rough roads, best to turn that feature OFF.* The Rove website has an interesting software download allowing you to ‘replay’ your trip. It shows your route, direction and speed (this is a Pro in my book). However the software didn’t work. ALL of the menu options had some sort of an error text on them, leaving to me guess which option I was picking based on years of software menu interaction. The portion that shows you a map of your route, said something was wrong with my browser (nothing is wrong with my browser – I use them all and they are all up to date). The Help > About showed it was coded by some Chinese workshop. I uninstalled after this interaction.* The display on the unit has a VERY shallow field of view. All the pictures you see of the display are from dead-on center and there is a reason for that. I placed the camera in the center of the windshield and in the driver’s seat I had to lean over to the center console to see what was being recorded. I think Rove may have saved money by putting a lesser quality screen, but unless you are sitting 0-10 degrees from center the image is washed out.* The wifi was an unimpressive feature. I downloaded the app and connected to the unit’s wifi. Every change seemed to require a reboot of the unit and disconnected me. I would have to turn the wifi back on manually each time to reconnect. Sometimes the unit would disconnect me after a few seconds of being connected with nothing going on whatsoever.* The light exposure really struggles on this camera and that may be the biggest deal killer for me personally. I’m putting up some photos that show what I experienced. Driving into the sun during the morning washes out all detail. Headlights at night also weren’t much better. Driving under bridges and emerging into the day light was a wash out. This was probably the most disappointing aspect overall. I used the default setting and you can adjust it, but are you really going to adjust it each time you get in the car? No.Now it’s not ALL bad. Here are the PROs:* Customer Service – I did contact Rove Customer Service and they were responsive and helpful. I ended up resolving the issue on my own, so I did not go beyond a first interaction.* I love the compact size and shape of this camera. Easily the most attractive of all the 4K options. A+ on looks.* The windshield mount is fantastic; best I’ve used. Really locks on solid.* All of the 4K dash cameras I’ve seen so far are from Chinese manufacturers and Rove is no different. However when you buy one of those cameras you feel you’re going to receive a poorly executed, no support on-your-own cam; Rove does execute the support well and the documentation translation was pretty good. I noticed 1 or 2 examples of Engrish. So overall can’t recommend the Rove at this time until those issues get resolved, but some of these are hardware issues so that’s not likely until the model is revised and not just with a firmware update. If they did resolve all those issues, I would give Rove another shot.Last thought, was before and still am just a TAD bit skeptical at all these GLOWING product reviews. This is a BRAND NEW product. Very hard to find 40 of the very first people to try your product to ALL give you 5 stars. I noticed also that many of the reviews are from anonymous ‘Amazon Customer’ sources and those people have reviewed only 1-3 products and some were only Rove products. So to say I am highly skeptical all these reviews are legit is an understatement and I don’t support when companies artificially attempt to influence purchases. If Rove has any part in this I call on them to end that practice and delete those reviews.

    Exceeds Expectations !

Realizing the overall benefits PDR (Performance Data Recorder) systems provide in vehicles we track, decided to get cameras for our daily driving vehicles. The R2-4K, 5star: easy to set up; easy to use; exceptional clarity; and customer support was immediately responsive. A Outstanding Value !

The camera is great. Rove customer service is positively excellent.

I highly recommend this dash cam. The resolution is very high, even allowing you to clearly read the license plate of the car in front of you. You can easily snap a still photo by tapping the power button, allowing you to create useful time stamps. This dash cam has vindicated me in situations where other drivers were at fault. The speed is displayed on the video to document. I had a technical issue with one of the units. Customer service responded to my inquiry within twenty-four hours. They were respectful and gracious. Ultimately they fixed the problem in a way that exceeded the call of duty. Thank you, Rove!

Comes with an excellent manual + extra features at a great price!

This dash cam has an excellent manual written so that you can understand it. I have bought the cheap Chinese dashcams that if you don’t understand or try playback mode – you may not have anything to show the cop after the accident. Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security! The other dash cams may have 3 cameras but most of them don’t record but one camera. This camera has GPS which records speed and location in case you need to go to court. I really like the swivel mount and the easily detachible camera feature while leaving the suction cup mounted to the windshield. Yes, I like this suction cup mount it allows me to take it to another vehicle. I haven’t tried the night vision and that is why I gave it only 4 stars for night vision but all in all this is an excellent camera!

    Love the cam, but…..

All in all, I really like this dash cam. Small, doesn’t block my view, beautiful picture quality, great price. I do have a couple of nits to pick though.1. The mirror mount provided fits the Corolla I had but it too small for the Jeep and the Camry. The suction mount does the job fairly well but it tends to loosen up a bit, so if I forget to check it weekly or so, I have really shaky video And being a suction cup, occasionally I find it on the floor.2. My real gripe – “your memory card is too slow”. It was perfectly fine for 4 months and then it would occasionally give me the error. A reboot would normally correct it, as would a format, but today, a little over 5 months later, it just decided that nothing would make it use that memory card. It’s a Samsung EVO Class 10 256GB, meets all the specs, and was perfectly fine for months. I see this in other reviews as well. It’s just a memory card, it should either meet the specs and work or not, but it shouldn’t be random like this. I travel a lot and not only depend on the camera for keeping an eye on my parked car and traffic situations, but also it’s nice to share with friends and family. This is an issue that really shouldn’t be hard to correct given the number of people who report it.Other than those two items, I love it. Going to buy another card today and see what happens, but I’m not going to keep feeding it a new card for long.8/11/23 update: Was tinkering with the old card and now it’s working reliably again, at least for now. I plugged it in to my laptop and did a full format (the fast format didn’t help, this one took several hours) that way. When I reinstalled it in the camera it did it’s own format. Back to normal.

    Easy to use!

This camera is really easy to use! It turns on and starts recording the moment your car turns on, and it stops when your car is off. You do have to buy a separate memory card, which brings the price point up. My only complaint is I wish you could attach the camera to the mounting points either direction, not just one way.

    3.0 out of 5 stars

*UPDATE*: Problem with mount. Not perfect but I’ll keep it.

UPDATE: Because we live in AZ and it gets HOT, I remove the camera from the mount whenever the car is parked in the sun. Due to many cycles of mounting and dismounting the camera it has become very loose on the mount and vibrates/shakes to the point where recordings are barely watchable. I attempted to correct this by “painting” the mounting track on the camera with nail polish to make it more secure. This did work (no more shaking) except now the camera is permanently attached to the mount so now to remove the camera from the hot car I need to remove the suction cup mount with the camera attached.Pros – Customer service – Contacted them twice (no problems, just questions) and each time I had a personal response within a few hours. – Easy to rotate for inside cabin view if needed for traffic stop – Can invert image (needed if mounting on dash upside down). VERY important as windshield mounting in illegal in many states. – The downloaded Windows viewing app with mapping and “guages” is nice (there is room for improvement but still good as-is.)Minor Cons – Red recording LED is only visible from looking straight on. It is not visible to the driver if the unit is mounted to the driver’s right. (Screen Saver red recording indicator is good). – Takes about 2 – 3 minutes to acquire GPS signal. The camera still works and records but the location and speed are delayed until the signal is acquired. – GPS measured speed is slow to adjust to changes in speed and fluctuates. – The computer “voice” is tinny and difficult to understand until you know what it is “saying”. – Even when the clock is set to GPS time, the time does not change when you’re driving and change time zones. You have to manually (through a menu pick) change the time zone on the camera. – You MUST use their 12-V to USB power adapter. If you use a third-party adapter you run a serious risk of burning out the camera. The Rove adapter is rated at 5-V DC at 3.1 amps whereas most all other adapters provide much greater amperage – usually 4.8 to 5 amps. I admit I’m not fully understanding the electronics involved. Hovever, some have complained their cameras stopped working and I wonder if they used a different power adapter and subsequently fried their camera.Concerrns Expressed by Other People – view angle: The 150 degree view angle of this unit is ok but 170 degrees that many other units have would definately be better. – not truly 4k: This doesn’t have the sharpest imaging but you can still read the license plate of the car in front of you at a stop light. Not an issue for me. – Single forward facing camera: That’s what it is. I’m not in the transportation for hire business and don’t need to record my family and friends in the car. – Suction cup mounting: Mine is mounted to a dash pad (not on the windshield) and it holds fine. No issues. – Micro SD card: I purchased the Samsung 256 EVO from Amazon and have had no problems. – WiFi: You do need to be in close proximity to the unit in order to connect via wifi but that is not an issue to me. I rarely connect via wifi – just to play and experiment with viewing recordings on my phone. Agreed that this is NOT an IP camera that can be accessed via the internet or away from the unit. Wifi is basically to be used to review recordings on your larger phone screen. – Failure to record: I’ve had the unit now for several weeks and have filled the memory card. The “loop recording” works fine. (Deleting oldest recording to make room for the current file to be saved.) I save files in 10-minute lengths. No failures to record. – Units died after a short while. You MUST use their 12-V power adaptor. See above.Like I said, not perfect but I don’t regret the purchase and I’ll keep it.

So far so good! Seems to work very well

It took about an hour to take my truck apart and run the wire – used piggyback fuses and this camera works very well. It connects instantly in the app on my phone and I have it set to turn off the screen after 60 seconds. It hides very well behind the rearview mirror.

My husband and I we in an accident 2 years ago and no one could be found at fault due to no witnesses, we immediately bought one of these cameras to have and like them so much, we ended up getting two more so we have one for each vehicle. The cord is super long so you can hide it really well, and the options on this dash cam are great. I now recommend them to all my family members now.

    SO EASY TO USE

Never thought I would be glad to see something break but when my old dash cam broke I started looking into a much better one. The night vision was like looking at something recorded in the day light! My old one could never do that. There are You Tube videos to help with set up but it was easy to do with out them. It has a good solid feel to it not like the $50.00 range plastic ones. I got the black Friday deal but would have paid full price with how good this one is.

Stellar Starter Dashcam and Budget-Friendly Fix for Dashcam ‘Analysis Paralysis’

Pros+Great build quality of the dashcam, itself.+Great image quality at 1440p@30fps.+Built-in battery allows for a parking function that records after sensing g-forces (i.e., an impact).+Two mounting options provided & easy to install.+Everything you need and more in the box (aside from an SD card). Box is also well-packed and protective.+Stupid simple setup. Easy to navigate UI if you want to dive into the settings to make changes.+Affordable.+AMAZING 67-page full-color manual.Cons-*2160p capable, but not traditional 4k resolution* (2880×2160 vs 3840×2160). Consider this a 1440p/2k camera when purchasing.-Not as compact as some other models.-Cable on thick side. USB or durability limitation?I had been wanting to buy a dashcam for YEARS, but have been stuck in ‘analysis paralysis’ just doing research on a purchase. Browsing Reddit and Youtube reviews and recommendations, etc. None of it really helped make a decision until I read a comment on Reddit by someone who just suggested to get something in your vehicle to start with, and go from there. Great advice. And so I set out to find something that would let me easily wade into the world of Dashcams without breaking the bank or skimping on necessary features… and I found that something in the Rove R2-4K.The box it came in was interestingly shaped and informative. The dashcam and other contents were nicely packaged and well protected. Everything you need comes in the box, include two types of mounts (adhesive and suction), two cables including one 12-foot long cable, cable guides, 110v cigarette lighter charger, and even a prying tool for helping to route your cable behind molding and panels. I geek out for manuals, and I was extremely surprised by how good the manual was. I was expecting maybe a fold out black and white “quick start guide” in broken English. What came in the box, however, was a 67 page, full-color booklet that was a mostly well written, detailed, exhaustive, and informational with instruction from specifications, to setup, to operation, to troubleshooting and more. Customer support options are also plentiful and listed front and center, instead of buried on the last page. Setup was straightforward and simple. The longest part of setup was figuring out exactly where the camera should be mounted – the work of mounting, routing cables, and other setup was a breeze.Image quality at 1440p@30fps is great. I do not like that the “4k” in the name of the device is somewhat misleading. The device only supports up to 2880×2160@24fps vs. traditional 4k which is normally 3840×2160. I understand they want to label this as “4k” since it is technically 2160p and to drive clicks and purchases from people who only purchase based on buzzwords and couldn’t tell the difference if a comparison was an inch from their eyeballs. Having read reviews before buying, I knew this was the case and I also knew I would be using this in 1440p for the extra temporal resolution provided by 30fps, so I can’t dock a star for that, but I do wish they were more upfront about the max resolution in the description here on Amazon. A note, the Novatek NT96660 chip cannot process 3840×2160 and the SONY IMX335 sensor doesn’t have the megapixels to capture the required amount of data for true 3840×2160, so this is strictly a hardware limitation. As is this is overall a solid 5 star, $100, 2k resolution* dashcam with $200+ dashcam bells and whistles. Easy to setup and operate. Easy piece of mind for myself and my SO when driving. Would easily recommend purchasing to anyone else who might be stuck in ‘analysis paralysis’. Easy to get in your car today and get your feet wet in dashcam land while you hum and haw over the ultimate dashcam setup that you might upgrade to down the road. These are things I would suggest to Rove if a v2 model is in the works:-Ditch/update the “4k” naming, or make it very clear in the description on Amazon what the supported resolutions are. Customers shouldn’t have to dig through the QA/review section to find that info.-Build quality is lovely, but consider making it more compact or angled so it can mount closer to the windshield and doesn’t have to “hang” down so much.-Cable length is great, but could it be made thinner without affecting power delivery or durability?-Keep up the great work on the documentation and user manual. Good stuff.Note: I’m writing this review after having installed and used the dashcam for a few days, and will check-in to update my review after a few weeks/months of regular use.

I was looking for an affordable and easy installing dash cam. This is it. I love how easy was to start using it, friendly app, easy to attach to my windshield. The quality as you can see is pretty great. I use a 5 min loop but you can chose shorter or longer.Night vision is great as well. Decent camera with expected drawbacks.

I’ve had the camera for a few months now, and it honestly works just fine. This review is mostly intended to talk about some of the concerns that I’m sure many other people have already discussed.Pros:1. The camera was very easy to install right out of the box. The instructions are clear and comprehensive, and I had the camera running in less than 5 minutes.2. The picture quality is pretty good. Like I mentioned, the detail does drop off at a distance, but honestly that’s to be expected. It’s a dashcam – you’re not going to be filming 4k movies with it.3. I like that I don’t have to do anything with it. I turn my car on, it turns on. I turn my car off, it turns off. Does exactly what it’s supposed to.4. For the camera, it’s a good value for the price.Cons:1. It’s very weird that in 2023 they’re using an obsolete charging cable. It comes with a ~10 ft long mini-USB charging cable. Mind you, that’s “mini,” not “micro.” If I had to hazard a guess, it’s to make it harder to replace without going through their company, but I’ll get to that in Con #2. This is also very minor, but it bends at a 90 degree angle from the camera, which is totally fine – but the orientation of the charging port causes it to bend “up,” which is a little odd.2. To address the elephant in the room: the SD card. I have experienced the dreaded “Memory card is too slow. Please contact us” message multiple times in the few months I’ve owned it. I read the disclaimers. I saw their instructions. I ignored them. Here’s the thing: it’s very bad business practice to tell people “Hey, you know the most reliable, well-known, and reputable suppliers of SD cards? Don’t use those. Instead, use ours which cost twice as much.” (Looking at you, Apple) In their description, they will use terms like “not genuine” or “third-party” to describe other companies that make SD cards (such as Samsung). I’m sorry, Rove, but YOU’RE the third-party here when it comes to technology products. I took great care to ensure that the memory card I purchased met the exact recommended specifications, while admittedly ignoring them requesting I purchase their brand. If they happen to read this: I would have bought your card if it wasn’t literally twice as expensive. It kind of feels like a shill: invent a problem (annoying message) and sell people the solution (buy OUR card). All of that being said, if you get this message and have an SD card that actually meets their recommended specs: turn off the camera by hand and turn it back on. Problem solved.

    Reliable camera; a few notes

Heed the warning to only use a Rove memory card. I thought I’d go ahead and use an always reliable Sandisk. Learned my lesson; camera won’t accept it.I have been fiddling around with camera off and on for awhile, finally set out for a road trip last month, thought I’d try it out (that’s when I found out the card wouldn’t work). I found camera a bit overwhelming with all of its settings and such…and I’m not techno phobic. I have several photography cameras (have been a photographer for 30 years). I have a variety of devices I set up/maintain from wireless cameras at home and streaming devices, to my smartphone/iPad/laptop/desktop (I used to tear apart my desktops, back in the day when it made sense to do so, to upgrade them). You get the idea.I bought this camera on the recommendation of someone I know well. He drives a large GMC pickup all over the state (and then some) in his line of work. Some moron just pulled right out in front of him one day from a parking lot on a very busy road, and hit the passenger side of the truck. Camera did an *excellent* job of capturing the accident, and was very helpful in providing proof he was not at fault.I live in SE Florida, and it seems all the crazies that are moving here in droves think it’s the Wild West, especially when it comes to driving. A ridiculous need for speed, and ignorance of all posted signs and many traffic laws. So I thought it wise to have a camera in the car for even local drives.I would have preferred a camera that was less cumbersome in the setup process. But then…I might just be less patient these days with these sort of things. And I feel like I’m back in the 70’s, trying to “update” my car so I have the latest technology in it (back then, it was for a CD player) with all the wiring…but that’s unavoidable (I have a 2008 Honda CR-V). At any rate, set aside a bit of time to familiarize yourself with the camera setup and operation, and another bit of time to get it set up in the car. I found the tool they provide is very helpful in getting the wire secured into the nooks and crannies by the passenger door. But, alas, there is still a bit of wire that I’m fiddling with under the glovebox to the cigarette splitter to stay put.I found no problem with the suction cup. In the three hour plus drive…some of which on rather bumpy roads…it held firm.I would recommend buying a double or triple “cigarette” outlet splitter, too, preferably with USB slots as well…especially if your car is an older model like mine. The camera has to be connected to one, and you may need one or two additional outlets for something else. For example, I need a second cigarette outlet so I can charge my camera batteries in the car. This is the one I purchased here:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CM7PJQB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1You may also want to purchase a small, point and shoot camera type case for it, so it’s protected while not in use in the car. I will be taking mine out every time after I go out, as it is recommended to not leave it in a car while not in use (my car sits outside all day in sometimes 100 plus degree interior heat in summer). And car break ins here are becoming routine as well.Based on my friend’s experience and mine so far, I would say this is a well built and reliable camera overall. Instruction manual, unlike so many these days, is excellent.

    FANTASTIC CAM!!!

The media could not be loaded.

This camera is clear and it is easy to use once you get to know what each button does. I sat down and read the book that came with it way before using it so that I could get a good understanding of everything. The video provided is at default settings, so I haven’t even set it to 4K yet and it is this clear. I do recommend the 128 Samsung 10 class u3 SD card for it as it records without freezing. I haven’t had any problems, but if I do, I will post an update. So far so good though.I can’t comment on the app yet because I haven’t used it, but when I do I will update. Also, I haven’t used the player yet either, but I did download it for Mac, so it is Mac and PC compatible. Once I use these features, I will update again.Update (2/15/2019): I finally used the app and it seemed to work well for me. It was very easy to connect to and I was able to see my videos. I can’t figure out how to use the player though. I thought if I insert the sd card to my computer, it would read from the video player and show me the data, but that wasn’t the case. If anyone figures out how to do this, please let me know. Also, I have integrated the camera into my video, meaning that I bought a kit so that I could plug it into the fuse box for a direct power source. I like the fact that it was easy to do and it now turns off the minute that the vehicle is turned off. The only time it will turn back on is if you have parking mode on, but it shuts off about 3 minutes after it has recorded an impact while parked ( i tested it by shaking my vehicle, I did not get hit). When I turned my vehicle back on, it spoke to me and said, “parking mode was activated,” so I knew right away that I needed to check what happened (of course, this was only a test though). Anyway, so far so good and the video is fantastic. When I learn to work with the player, I will update again. :)Update (12-18-2019) So I figured out everything and so far so good. I ended up buying another one because my son wanted one just like it. He loved how easy it was and the updates that Rove puts out for the cam. They also contacted us when we ordered it. They just said that if we needed anything they would be more than happy to speak to us over the phone with a live agent. What a live agent! They were very nice. I have not had a problem with this cam at all and I do recommend it to others. I just saw that they are having a sale on their website for it, so I might buy another one for my husband. Can you say Christmas gift 🙂 They have a 25% off code on the website. I believe it is ROVEVIP25 to get 25% off. Anyway, this is a great dashcam and I couldn’t have asked for more. I am a loyal customer!

Great features, price and video quality

I had been using an old dashcam that was supposedly 1080, but the video quality was very poor and blurry. While looking for a replacement I found a friend who had this model and recommended it. I’ve been using it for a few days now and it’s incredible. The 4k video quality is fantastic, but the additional features of date/time stamp with locational information and current speed are a wonderful bonus feature.I’d highly recommend this dashcam!

Decent dashcam – for the price

Got this dashcam as an extra layer of protection against other drivers and insurance fraud. Have used it on a 1,600 mile round-trip journey. I’ve used the app and watched videos on my PC. My unbiased thoughts are:Pros:1. The camera is reasonably small and fits well on the windshield2. The provided suction cup works really well. Stays on very tight. Never had any issues with it moving.3. Haven’t had a problem (yet) with it not recording or saving. Appears to have recorded the entire time during the trip.4. The on-screen display is actually pretty nice, and the additional data it records on the videos is great.5. Speed of vehicle appears pretty darn accurate. It has about a 2 second lag between when you achieve a speed and when it registers, but that is to be expected from a gps speed monitoring system. But the speed it showed, once caught up, was always within 1mph of what my car said.6. Comes with everything you need (except for SD card). Two cables (short and long) for routing in your car, a USB-C micro-SD adapter, suction cup mount, and a few other doo-dads.7. The app has worked well for me thus far. Was easy to set up and easy to connect to device.Cons1. Video quality is not great. It’s not bad, and you can clearly see cars and other road objects. But cannot make out license plates when traveling at reasonable speeds. if vehicles are stopped, say at a red light, then yes. But once the car is moving 40+mph, license plates become pretty much illegible. Not a huge deal for me, as I care more about proving fault during a collision, but if you care about hit & runs or stuff like that, it is unlikely you will be able to identify the license plate from this camera. There are different video options (1080p, 2K, 4K), but at speed, it doesn’t seem like they make too much of a difference.2. Night vision also isn’t great. Again, it’s good enough to show whether you were in the right or wrong, but isn’t good enough to identify details.3. The mount doesn’t have a huge amount of adjustability. The “clicks” on the mount are too far spaced apart for adjusting pitch, so, based on your windshield angle, you might be pointing too high towards the sky or too low towards the hood.. Adjusting yaw is pretty flexible, though, so that’s good.All-in-all, this is a decent dash-cam. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. The picture quality isn’t great, and the mounting adjustability needs some work, but for just over $100, I can’t complain too much. It will be more than adequate for proving fault during a collision. So I would absolutely recommend for that purpose.I will mention that I bought the Rove brand 256 GB micro-SD card. It’s about $12 more expensive than non-Rove brand cards (but good quality, brand names), but I didn’t want to fight with technical support about which card I’m using if it ever came to that.

Good product. Difficult installation due to a bug in the app.

I bought 2 of these for my 2 cars. It is for protection in case of an accident, to document what happens in a crash. The package arrived on time. I bought the additional Rove memory cards recommended.Video of installation referenced was good. The device is small. The features of playback and lock are good. The manual is good. Video quality is good. Image quality is good. Cord length is adequate to run cord so it is hidden.Unfortunately, neither unit connected to my Android phone, as it was supposed to, and I got an error message as in the picture above. The customer service number had a recording. The recording advised me to use text messaging, but answered the text 2 hours later with questions and a request to download videos to them, which I did. They emailed me, and suggested restoring the camera to factory default, turning off mobile data on the phone, restarting phone, force phone to forget pairing, and deleting and reinstalling the Rove 3.5 version App. None of this worked.Update: I was contacted by email by Customer support, who reported that there was a bug in the ROVE App 3.5. They said the new version , 3.6 is now available, and to update my app from the play store. The new app worked immediately. Product is now functioning very well. Video playback and download can be done via chip to computer, camera to phone, or camera to computer with supplied cable.I am satisfied with the product as it is functioning now, which is good because I bought and installed 2 of them before encountering this bug. Thanks to customer support.

so far so good =SEE EDIT FOR SOME GUIDANCE IF YOU EXPERIENCE CHOPPY VIDEO PLAYBACK=

i’m writing this review on my literal day 1 of owning the camera and only just now finished installing it in my car. (the pic attached is from when i had JUST turned it on while i was in the passenger seat and was still fiddling with the angle. I also blocked out the location coordinates, but thats something you can toggle off in the settings as well)the setup is simple. there are tons of quick short videos to help guide you on how you might want to tuck away the wiring. you just plug it into the car charging socket (you can also hard wire it into your car if you’re knowledgeable and comfortable doing so)i read the booklet that came with it. a lot of useful info in it. Tons of features and settings you can use to customize it to what suits you best.i like that it has ‘parking mode’ which means the camera will automatically turn on and record for a bit if it detects a sudden impact/movement while the car is parked (and while you are presumably away). i experienced ended up testing this while i was carrying the dashcam with my hands full. i accidentally dropped the camera, and even though it was off, it suddenly turned on and stating something along the lines of “parking mode has been activated”. It started recording, but since i didn’t fully charge it at the time, it only stayed on for a few seconds (which is normal for these type of dash cams. The manual states that the camera typically should be able to sustain a recording of 3-5 minutes on a fully charged battery).I also tried the app. it lets you view/download your footage in real-time by connecting to the dashcam’s built-in wifi. i HIGHLY recommend downloading the newer beta app (which currently has an all orange UI. the old app hasn’t been updated since 2019 and had tons of negative feedback, so i didn’t even bother with that).I think the app is a nice benefit. It’s nice if you need to quickly share a photo or footage of what just happened on the road, but you don’t have the time or ability to connect the dashcam to a computer or other device. and you do this by connecting to the dashcam’s BUILT-IN wifi. you don’t have to do anything special or complicated to set it up. it’s pretty self explanatory. BTW If you have any trouble connecting to the app, you might have to disable mobile data on your phone to properly connect).I’ll be sure to update this review if anything comes up that greatly impacts my impression on the product, but so far i’m satisfied. I’ll be sure to take care of this one (my last dashcam stopped functioning properly because i would leave it in the car 24/7, even during extreme summer heat or extreme winter cold).===EDIT 4-10-22===i’ve owned this for a few weeks now. I recently decided to hook it up to my pc to check on the videos, just to make sure video/audio were being captured properly and that there were no issues. i was pretty horrified at first to see that the videos seemed really glitchy/choppy. it was practically unwatchable!i did some quick googling and saw some people suggest it could be the framerate/resolution that it’s recording in. and then i remembered that the instruction manual mentioned using a decent video player- specifically something like VLC.so that’s what i did. I already use VLC for other things on my pc, so i opened some videos in it. no more choppy/jittery video! everything was smooth and amazing! So, in short, if you’re noticing that your videos appear choppy and strange i’d suggest either playing back your videos in something like VLC and NOT your basic windows media player. It’d also be worth it to maybe try lowering the camera’s FPS/resolution settings if that still doesn’t work for you (Although I would say lowering the quality should probably be a last resort… since, you know, the whole point of a dashcam is so that you can capture everything on the road in perfect quality)the only gripe i have now is that the dashcam itself seems to slightly shake/jitter when driving at certain speeds/roads. I think this is a result of the cars vibrations. I’ll try to see if this’ll be fixed by tightening the mount or repositioning it a little. it’s possible that we just didn’t have it locked in properly (I haven’t been the one personally driving with the webcam lately. So maybe my family members flubbed on that)It’s nothing too crazy, though.Still happy with this device! very worth it!==final edit 7-21-22===it’s been 4 months since i owned it and its STILL incrediblei’ve even connected to it to share a clip of a dicey moment i had on the highway! (i did this by connecting to my pc. the app is still an amazing option to connect remotely/on the spot, but i was already at my pc anyways)i wanted to take a moment to commend their support team as well. i recently contacted support because i somehow managed to push the power button in so far that it got stuck. i was surprised that this happened! this made it difficult to turn the camera on/off at will. i contacted their support team directly after finding their email on their website. i described the issue, provided picture evidence & proof of purchase, then they were able to process a replacement as it was still under warranty! the entire process was smooth and hasslefree. it didnt take very long at all for the replacement to come in. i customized the settings and took some video footage + photos as a test. Everything was perfect.I didn’t have to wait long at all for their replies/solution (something i was extremely wary of after dealing with support teams from other products/services)Anyways, I support this brand/small team VERY much! I think its VERY important to have a dashcam. Even if u don’t feel comfortable hot-wiring or whatever, i feel that even a USB/car charger-type of cam is better than nothing– like i said, i’ve already reviewed & shared footage to friends & family at least once after having a spooky moment on the highway. It’s not only good for urself, but others as well. U never kno wat could happen. Video doesnt lie. ur footage/photos could do a lot to help u or even a stranger if u ever come across a sticky situation.

    Still going strong!

*** 3 year update – far out, where did that 3 years go?? I blinked and missed it 😔 … Anyway, It’s been 3 years and this camera still functions fine. The built in battery that powers the camera briefly while parked doesn’t hold a charge as long as it did when new. It will power the camera for about 30 seconds (+/-) as a standalone power source if the camera is set to detect impacts while parked. If you have the power supply offered by Rove this won’t be an issue. I’ve been extremely happy with this camera. For the money I couldn’t have asked for more! This will most likely be the last update as I’m sure you’re tired of reading this review by now 😁. It’s an awesome camera, just buy it, you won’t be disappointed! In closing, stay safe out there, be well, and live life to its fullest! ****** 2 year update – Well, here we are 2 years after purchasing this camera. It’s scary how fast time flies! I don’t have a lot to add to my original review. The camera still functions perfectly and I’m still very satisfied with my purchase. I download a short video to my phone every few months just to make sure the camera, memory card, app, and wifi still function properly, and I glance up at the camera when I start the vehicle just to make sure it’s recording for each trip. I still use the original app available for the camera, and the Samsung memory card that was recommended and purchased with the camera at the time of my original review. I notice now that Rove is recommending other types of memory card, and there have been app upgrades since, but I’m not going to mess with a good thing so I’ll keep everything as it is. Overall I have been more then satisfied with my Rove experience. If/when this one eventually fails I will not hesitate to purchase another one, so Rove, please don’t stop making this camera! ***=========================Original unedited review….I purchased this camera at an Amazon “Prime Day” price. I also purchased a Samsung Evo Select (Class 10-U3) 168gb micro sd card at the same time as one isn’t supplied with the camera.I have been using the camera for about 4 weeks at the time of this review. This is a nice, small, unobtrusive, dashcam. It appears, and feels, to be built from quality materials. It comes with a couple of different brackets for mounting. The double sided tape mounting bracket was the best option for my ’07 Jeep Wrangler due to the near vertical windshield. The suction mount, when mounted nearly vertical, held the lens almost right on the glass. I mounted mine to the plastic trim above the windshield with the supplied tape mount where it’s perfectly stable and holds the lens a couple of inches from the windshield. The instruction booklet supplied with the camera is well written and easy to follow. There are also several “how to” video tutorials available on the Rove website which go into detail of the operation, setup, and button shortcuts available on this camera. The camera’s onboard menu’s are easy to follow and navigate. There is even voice guidance with each button press which is in clear english, in a female voice. That’s just plain cool at this price point! With even basic knowledge of electronic gadgets, setup is straight forward and can be completed in about 10 minutes or less. If after reading the included instruction booklet, and viewing the video tutorials, you still have questions, concerns, or problems, a text or an email sent to Rove is quickly answered in a kind, informative, and professional manner. My own initial questions (via text) were answered in less than 3 minutes, and it was on a Sunday. It’s also refreshing that the technicians are based right here in the USA in Chicago! This camera’s video quality is outstanding! Although you can view the videos on the screen of the camera just be aware that the screen is very small and pixelated. It’s not a fault, it’s there if you need it, or want to use it, and it functions as it should, but don’t expect full HD video results on a 2 inch screen. Pulling the sd card and viewing on a computer, or a quick download to my Android phone (after installing the free app) using the built in wifi results in a high quality HD video that can be viewed by, or shared with anyone. At 1080p@60fps, with the 168gb Samsung Evo Select micro sd card that I chose, a 1 minute video (157mb) can be downloaded via wifi to my old Samsung Galaxy S8 in under a minute, and a 3 minute video (464mb) in roughly 2.5 minutes. I haven’t found a need to operate my camera above 1080p@60fps yet but at that resolution videos, when viewed on my phone, are sharp and clear with bright natural colors, and without glitches or twitches. I am more than satisfied with the video quality and camera performance on bright sunny days, nighttime, and on rainy or overcast days. It has been used in all of those conditions already and performed above my expectations.Although nothing new, this camera has a very sensitive built in microphone that records audio to the video. Thankfully It can be permanently disabled in the settings menu if you wish. Again, it is VERY sensitive. I’ve left mine on but am mindful of what I say outloud these days. All I hear in the videos unless I’m on the phone, conversing with a passenger, or accidentally muttering an obscenity at another driver, is the radio when it’s on, the hum of my offroad tires, and large bugs smacking the windshield. A simple button push, the up button (^) on mine, enables a quick toggle on or off of the mic, or as mentioned before you can disable it completely in the settings menu. The mic is very useful during traffic stops, or road rage incidents, where people are close enough to the vehicle to be heard so I leave mine on and only toggle it off if I don’t want audio recorded at that moment.I can’t report on longevity or lifespan of the camera yet as I’ve only had it for a month, but so far I have experienced zero issues. The camera comes with a 12 month factory warranty, and I purchased a 3 year protection plan through Amazon (Asurion) at the same time I purchased the camera. The protection plan rides on the back of the factory warranty for the first twelve months, then acts as a true extended warranty for the remaining two years. I’m covered for any unforeseen mechanical issues, or faults, for 3 years so I’m happy.Having this camera provides peace of mind, and an added sense of security, in the event something does happen in future while driving and I need an unbiased, honest, witness to the event.I have already recommended this camera to friends and family members. There are better cameras out there I’m sure, but at this price point you are getting a lot of camera for your money!I have attached a couple of photos of the camera mounted in my vehicle, and two screen shots grabbed from video to give an idea of nighttime and heavy rain camera ability.

Solid dash cam at a good price point

I bought two of these dash cams and have had good success with both. Good video quality, sound quality, and reliability. However, I do suggest getting the hardwire kit for the always-on recording–this has made the dash cam even better since I now have 24/7 recording.Only had one issue with one of our cams saying the memory card recording speed was too low (we bought top of the line Sandisk cards which matched the required specs). I contacted customer service and they very kindly worked out a solution by sending me one of their branded cards which seems to have helped!

    Perfect for its purpose.

Dashcam works awesome and has come in handy a couple times since i’ve gotten it, from close calls with other drivers to seeing cool wildlife, it captures everything I hoped it would while I’m driving. Also, using it is quite easy and the camera quality is better than I thought it would be which was a bonus. Holds onto the windshield good and has not fallen off since I put it up. Only thing I wish was included was the SD memory card, I don’t understand why that wouldn’t be included in the camera but that’s business I guess.

    Easy to install

I was looking for affordable dash cams after someone hit my car and I came across this one. It was very easy to install and use. The only down fall is you can’t see your videos if it’s not connected to its WiFi or unless you have downloaded them. Other than that this product is definitely worth it.

Great quality — need an account to transfer to phone

Really like how easy it is to set up. The instructions on both software set up and routing the cable and mounting to the windshield were unexpectedly clear.Only down side is if you want to use it to transfer videos to your phone, you need to create an account. Not sure where the data is stored, so may not be a great buy if you’re worried about privacy.

    must have

in todays world this is a must have. I bought the kit to hardwire it in so it comes on when I start my truck. with all the insurance scams that happen. Its good to know I have proof other than my word if I ever need it. the company I work for has one in every truck (30+ trucks) so I bought one for my personal vehicle. You can never be too safe.

    Excellent car recorder

I bought two of these units for both myself and my wife. Living in Florida and with all the crazy ways people are driving these days these units provide peace of mind. These units will help in case of an accident by eliminating the “He did She did” scenario when there are no witnesses available. The memory card will record everything while driving and when it becomes full it will re-write over the oldest data to keep continuity. Well worth the money to protect yourself and your investments.

Great product and excellent customer service

We use the ROVE in our semi trucks and they are easy to use and install and have already saved us in an insurance case against a pickup truck that swiped our front end. I’m very satisfied with the dashcam and I appreciate the staff helping us get a power cable replaced that arrived broken. I plan to buy additional ROVE’s as we expand our fleet in the future.

    Big features in small package

I wanted to replace an older dash cam that came with my used vehicle. The main “must have” feature was be able to download recorded videos to my iPhone wirelessly while camera was in place in the vehicle. The old camera I had worked but it required pulling a microSD card and then downloading to PC and then reinserting the microSD card which I really didn’t care for. After researching cameras online, I came across the ROVE R2-4K Dash Cam and was immediately impressed with the list of features. Foremost was multiple resolutions from 4K (be aware it is a 4:3 form factor, not the typical 16:9 common with 4K TV’s) to VGA should you want that low level resolution. And it met my main “must have” feature to download directly via WI-FI to my iPhone 12 Pro while leaving the camera in place in the vehicle. I also like the small footprint of the camera itself. I installed mine right behind my rear view mirror with just the display peeking out under the mirror body. This was made possible by the position of the 5 buttons at the bottom edge of the camera display which allow operation and control of the camera’s modes and options. This makes a nice compact positioning to alleviate any obstruction of my view of the side of the road while driving yet allows me to still see the LCD display if needed. The camera provides real time speed and GPS position data on the recorded video and allows playback with downloadable software to see your ground track on the map if desired.I also installed the optional 3 wire hardwire interface kit to allow the camera to be powered 24 hrs a day for video when driving and to allow monitoring of parking and any issues related to theft or fender benders in garages, etc. The kit requires tapping power from 2 places on the fuse block under the dash and is easy to install. All tapping jumpers and parts are supplied with the kit.All I can say about the manuals for both the camera and the 3 wire kit is WOW!! Finally a manual with REAL clear photos and written by someone with a command of the English language. They read smoothly and are very informative. With these manuals, I would think that it would be rare to have any major issues in installing and operating the camera.I did have a question on installing the stick-on hard mount (supplied with camera along with the suction cup mount also). I made use of the TEXTing function to the company customer service and was shock to actually get a very detailed answer in only a few minutes and this was on a Saturday!! That issue solved and I made use of the TEXTing function again the next day (on Sunday) on an issue about connecting the 3 wire kit and again was surprised to get a response within a few minutes. That problem solved easily and the camera and 3 wire kit are now installed with cables run behind dash and headliner. The camera now automatically switches between NORMAL video recording mode while driving and 24 Hour Parking Monitor mode when engine is switched off and vehicle is parked. All in all, in the short time I have had the camera I have made a few quick drives through town traffic and out on the highway. The indicated drive speed on the camera was within 1 mph compared to the speedometer of the vehicle. The video was set to 4K and was clear and smooth at 65 mph. License plates on passing vehicle were easily readable on the video. Signs that were passed were clear with not tearing or distorted. The Wide Dynamic Range easily handle full bright sun and shadows from dark rain clouds. In summary all I can say is I believe you would not be disappointed in getting a Rove R2-4K Dash Camera. I know I made the right choice. And in case anyone is wondering, I have not been compensated with anything from anyone for this review.

    Set it and forget it.

Not too difficult to set up. After that, just let it do its thing. When you need it (and you will), just remove the micro SD card and plug it into a computer for your captured video. In my case, it proved the accident I was in was 100 percent the other drivers fault. A very appropriate settlement was received thanks to this dash cam! It didn’t take me long to order a second one for the wife’s car. The only thing to watch out for is how it powers off and on. In my vehicle, I have to do it manually each time. In my wife’s car, it happens automatically. Not a biggie. Probably because her vehicle is newer than mine. So quit reading this and buy one for each vehicle you own and also anyone else you care about!

Bought, returned, looked around, everything else was crap, bought it again!

Ok, first I have to admit that I returned my first copy of this unit after a few days, I was just a little too impatient and made some hasty decsions about usability and functionality. I then went through three other dash cams (including a Hero 9 which isn’t really good as a dash cam) and a couple of other “highly rated” brands, and was still dissatisfied with the offerings. So I reconsidered, re-evaluated my habits and needs, and decided to re-order the Rove unit. The specs for this unit match up well with pretty much anything in the $100 – $200 +/- price range. I just can’t justify spending the money on a NextBase 522GW or 622GW unit, the VIOFO A129, or even the Nexar Beam units. The video quality of the files seems to be excellent, even when displayed on non-ideal viewing platforms. All the GPS data is there, timestamps are accurate, and even your speed and Lat/Long are there.(That’s one thing I think so many Amazon or YouTube reviews and samples seem to forget to mention – no matter how good the original video file is, if you’re viewing someone else’s files on your crappy old PC monitor or a TV that doesn’t support UHD or 4K video, what you see is not accurate in terms of the original quality. If you’re looking at “4K” video on an old smartphone screen or a PC with barely-above VGA quality, you’re not getting a true picture. Keep that in mind.)My requirements were simple – I wanted 4K and, perhaps more importanly, outstanding UHD resolution, which I’ll use most often. I wanted built in GPS without the need to buy a separate logger. I wanted a WiFi connection ability to control and monitor the unit via smartphone. I wanted a cam that was simple to get set up, started recording as soon as it got power (without having to reach over and press a power button), and made my life easier, not harder. The startup process is easy, the menuing system is adequate ( most consumer device menus are really crappy, honestly, but the Rove is at least easy enough to navigate through), and the included mounting devices work fine – I use the suction cup mount, and it attached well, and was very secure. (Hint: clean your windshield with an alcohol wipe first to remove the crud left there by dashboard plastic outgassing or smoke.)I sent a few questions into Rove customer service and got quick, intelligent, and clear answers. They seem to be genuinely helpful and don’t talk (or write..) down to their customers. Their English was first rate, which these days can be an issue. I believe Rove is US-based, and I don’t mind “foreign” support staff, if they can speak the language. And yes, I know that not everyone is from the US, and there are foreign customers, but it’s nice to communicate with someone who can speak and write accurately in my case. If you are from Thailand or Chile or Tanzania, I’m sure you’d appreciate working with someone who speaks your language too.The packaging is first rate, the build quality and documentation are very good, and the unit does what it says it will do. This is a dash cam worth every penny, it provides excellent value and is highly recommended.

    Amazing Camera

The wife and I needed a good quality camera on a budget for out move across the country. It was 2,400 miles so we needed something reliable! This sucker was amazing at what it does. the ability to record in 1, 3 or 5 minutes segments is something I never expected and the picture quality at day and night are both phenomenal. My only problem with it is it has to be taken down off the windshield every time I’m done because it will over heat.I would certainly buy this again for a road trip across the country. It made me feel extremely secure about everything.

Good product and the manufacturer obviously takes pride in their product

The product was packaged and protected well. It is obvious that they put a lot of effort into the manual as it’s the best product manual I’ve seen in quite some time — very professionally done especially when compared to so many others. It is nice to see that they take pride in their product and care about their customer’s success in understanding and using their dash cam. A nice change from so many small electronic manufacturers who seem to want noting to do with you after the sale. They have a good website with videos to help with every aspect of the camera if you prefer those instead of the manual.I’ve only had the product installed for 1 day but the capabilities of the camera and the software’s UI (user interface) is better than the other two dash cams I’ve used in the past. The picture quality is very good. The ability to use WiFi to download the videos is nice and is much faster are more reliable than a previous dash cam that I had which had the same feature. I like to audio feedback as well but it can be turned off if desired.I will try to come back and give a longer term update after I have had more experience with this dash cam but from my experience thus far I can say without reservation that this is the best dash cam I have ever used and it should probably be at the top of your short list of cams you should consider buying.Additional short term update: 07/20/2023: I have had the opportunity to contact them via email and they have been very responsive and helpful. My initial impression about them caring about their customer’s success and the product seem to be “spot-on”. I have updated the camera’s firmware and the process went smoothly and I had no issues. I do recommend that you purchase their ROVE branded micro SD card as I did as it is has the proper ratings and is of high quality. I highly recommend both the product and them as a company with which to do business. I still plan to do a longer term update in the future as well.

    Really good budget 4k cam

I used this while trucking across the lower 48, and it’s still one of my favorite dashcams.

    Excellent entry level camera

For the price, it’s great. I bought this camera after someone almost merged into on the expressway in Chicago. So far I’m pretty impressed. The picture is crystal clear and the speeds are great. I love that I can have my speed stamped on the camera to prove that I was driving safely. Set up was fairly easy, it’s my first camera so I’m assuming it’s pretty standard. The only thing I wish was different was being able to load video on my phone without needing the camera to be powered on.If and when it eventually dies, I may upgrade to a better model but I would stay with the same company.

    Good dash cam.

I’ve been using this dash came for about a year and a half now with no issues except the double sided tape has had to be replaced a handful of times, not an issue though.
