New DVD players apparently suck, but this one at least works
After our old DVD player died this is the second we purchased within a month. The first wouldn’t reset from factory default period. This one is slightly better. It has a red light that stays on when the machine is off. If you stop a disc during play it will remember where you stopped and restart from there, HOWEVER, it will default to wide screen TV format, subtitels on, and volume set to 75% pre amp.So every time you turn it back on you have to adjust things using a menu and two separate buttons on the remote. Even with subtitles turned off anything printed on the bottom of the screen setting the scene (10pm Washington DC) will appear in French at the top of the screen or vice versa.WHY if the red light stays on sucking power can this thing not remember basic settings like TV type? We have a tube TV, never stream, and don’t need eleventy thousand things from a DVD player. We want it to play discs and not have every evening start with adjusting EVERYTHING all over again because this machine defaults to a flat screen TV for people who want to read, but not hear, and I guess in French at the same?It works, but user friendliness is LOW.

An all region DVD player that ACTUALLY does what it is supposed to do
Love it. Easy to use, and STILL working after a few months (unbelievable for stuff made in China normally!) But it looks like I have finally found an all region DVD player that ACTUALLY does what it’s supposed to do! Great price as well.

DVD Player for TV
Disappointed as I canNOT increase the volume to hear better. I lost partial hearing from the Covid vaccine therefore I need the ability to hear it better and I cannot. The volume goes up BUT NOT enough! When we try to put captioning to read in ENGLISH it does not allow that either all other languages yes just NOT English… Therefore I haven’t been able to watch DVD’s to enjoy a movie. I specifically got this one since it allowed more Regions such as films produced in Europe, that part is great although IF I can’t hear it or read the language to assist lack of hearing I have not been able to watch anything yet!!

Basic but Works
This is very basic DVD player, but if you need region unlocked then this is a good option. It’s cheap and it works well. If you want fancier features then look elsewhere.

NO HDMI Output – Open box
While it was sold as new, it was clearly an open box item – likely for the next issue I had – The listing clearly states HDMI output multiple times but this unit does not have an HDMI output. I see that there is an almost identical listing from this same seller for $10 more with a review video showing a unit that looks just like the one I received except that it has an additional output (HDMI) on the back. I did plug it in and confirm it played music disks fine – so it’s probably functionally fine if you’re good with RCA and component outputs only. Returning so that I can get a unit with HDMI.

Doesn’t read all Regions as claimed
Product claims to read all regions. I have a Region 2 dvd that it is not reading. Once the dvd player is on and connected to the TV with the HDMI connector, the phrase “WRONG REGION” pops up. Will be returning this item since I bought this player for the sole purpose of playing DVDs from other regions… which it cannot provide.

Decent player, bad zoom, tragic remote control
Pros: It works, even with Netflix DVDs.Cons: Zoom size is small. The remote control keys are multi-function; some key functions get changed depending on what you’re doing.I use zoom a lot. With other players, I’ll often zoom in and then slowly advance the picture. Can’t do that with the remote for this player because the keys controlling the alternate speeds (step, slow motion, fast forward or reverse) are the same keys that control where the picture is centered in zoom, so if you’re using zoom you can’t access those other functions anymore. As to the zoom itself, 2X is about 15% bigger, 3X around 25%, and 4X might make it to 45% larger than the original picture size. My older unit zooms in at more than triple those values. If you don’t care about using zoom, then the player has a good clear picture and has been able to read everything that Netflix has thrown at me. If you’re familiar with the typical (lack of) quality of Netflix DVDs, which usually have at least small scratches and look like they’re never cleaned, you’ll know this is a big plus.

This player will not play region free as advertised.
The set up menu for setting the region free feature isn’t available. A software update does not appear on the Philips website. It doesn’t appear that Philips even recognizes this model as one of theirs! It’s just an ordinary DVD player without the advertised region free. Don’t be fooled by the claim.

Initial Impressions
Well, after a few hours of play, this unit still works. I’ve been looking at buying this unit for some time but hesitated because many reviewers complained that this unit failed shortly after purchase and some failed on the first day of play. But for me, it’s so far so good. It looks great– slim, sleek and compact. It looks like it’s worth more than the $40 I paid for it.I was delighted to see that it could play the many DVD’s I bought overseas that I couldn’t play on my Sony because of region code and PAL/NTSC conversion problems. This thing plays them all! I was somewhat concerned that I had to do some programming to make it region-free, but it was region-free right out of the box– no programming required!I also threw a few DIVX, MPG, AVI, and WMV files at it. It found and played the DIVX and MPG (MPEG-1 and 2) files fine but refused to play some AVI files and all of my WMV files. Also, it could not read some of my burned DVD’s, perhaps because of the Mac/PC hybrid file structure I chose to use. On the other hand, it seemed more tolerant of scratched or dirty DVD’s as it played my damaged DVD’s smoothly while my Sony refused to play them at all.All in all, I’m quite happy with this little unit. Though it could not play WMV and some AVI files, it could play almost everything else. Response time in locating and playing video files was good– as good as if not better then my computer’s. The picture quality was excellent– just as good as my trusty old Sony. It provided sharp, progressive scan picture through its three component video outputs. As far as its reliability– and this is my greatest concern with this unit– I can’t comment on that as I’ve had this for only one day. But in the day that I’ve used it, it worked very well. I’ll come back and report on its reliability in about 6 months from now. Until then, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Died after less than two months.
This died on me tonight. For no reason whatsoever it just stopped working. No power, whether using the remote or the on/off button on the device itself. I swapped out the audio/video cable with a different one to see if that might be the problem but it still wouldn’t work. I have had it for less than two months and I watched less than twenty films during that time…I have edited my review. The paragraph above was part of my initial post and I kept it in because that information is still applicable regarding the device. However, I have edited my review because the seller contacted after I had posted my negative review and informed me that they offer a 1-year warranty. Subsequently, I was able to return the broken item and they replaced it. I was very surprised and very grateful for this. I cannot vouch for the quality of this brand of DVD player but I will definitely buy from the seller again. They were very helpful, interactive, and the replacement works fine (so far). The battery provided was dead but I used one of my own and the remote works fine as well. If this one dies on me quickly as well I will purchase a different model. Someone replied to my earlier review that Philips is a well known name brand in DVDs but I have never heard of it. Regardless, if this one lasts longer I will be very pleased.

I wanted to watch PBS Civil War but player said no disc. Put in a different one and it played. This DVD has been played before but wasn’t damaged. Don’t know what else to say. Called Philips and got a severe run around with 4 different phone numbers and was hung up on twice. not a fun time.

NOT all region!
Whole reason for this purchase was that it was a brand I have used for other products which were great AND that it was all-region. The description reads “Philips DVD players with HDMI Port all region DVD player for Smart TV USB Input remote Control device, etc.” Key words for me were “all region.” It is further described as a “universal DVD player, multi zone 1,2,3,4,5,6.” Pretty amazing, considering that the thing will only play region 1. It says in the enclosed user manual that it is for USA and Canada only. In product description, it touts “all region.” I am very disappointed. Bought a rather expensive set of DVDs using British format and bought this player in order to watch them. Needless to say, will be sending the unit back and will never purchase Philips product again. it did play a US disc with no problem. Their ad writers need to read their own user manual. Waste of time. Hopefully not money because it will be too late to exchange the DVD’s if there is a problem with them. If you do order this, I wish you luck.

Great Quality
Philips DVD player boasts a variety of useful features that add value to the product. One of my favorites is the USB port, which allows me to play media files directly from a USB drive, eliminating the need for burning DVDs. Additionally, the player supports various disc formats, including CDs and MP3s, making it versatile for playing different types of media

Worked Great but Died After 16 Months
I bought this Philips DVD player because I trust the brand and have always had good luck with their products. This DVD player was very inexpensive and small and got great reviews, so I tried it. And it worked great–I really like the simple controls (and simple remote) and the quality was superb. I had no complaints at all–except that it died after less than a year and a half. I bought it in December 2007 and it went belly up in April 2009. It still turns on, it just fails to recognize any discs (and I’ve tried about a dozen, all of which had previously played in the machine). It simply says “Error” or “Problem Disc” and stops loading. I’ve tried all the common cures, including unplugging it, etc. It’s just not reading the discs–possibly there is dust on the reading lens.I really can’t complain too loudly, I suppose, since I paid about $30 for it and got free shipping during a special promotion. But still, there seems no reason for a piece of solid circuit to die after such a short time. So, great while it lasted, but didn’t last long enough. Why is it that a transistor radio I bought in the 1960’s and keep in the garage still works? 🙂

Plays well-like the other Phillips DVD players
I bought this player for my best friend as a birthday present. I had bought two region free players last year–both were the discontinued Phillips 640 model–and they have worked fine. I bought this one from a dealer as a refurbished model; when my friend opened it and when we put in the DVD (that I’d purchased from the UK) it did not play. I immediately checked the Amazon website and thanks to one of the reviews I was able to get it to play the UK discs and the ones bought here in the US as well. I know my friend is happy because she can now see the Bad Girls series without having to wait for it to crawl by every week on one of the cable channels. This is a very good choice for a region free player and also works well as the “everyday” player for your movie watching as well.

Perfect for Multi-Region SD viewing
DVD players don’t seem to last very long these days. We’ve been through 3 over the last 6 years, in all cases the loading mechanism broke. Fortunately, they are much cheaper now.We wanted a DVD player that would play PAL and multi-region discs and also be reliable. While the latter of course will remain to be seen, the universal play part seems to be working. It plays Russian restricted PAL DVDs right out of the box. I did not need to enter any code from remote. Note of course that I only tried Russian DVDs, so YMMV with those from other regions.DVD players keep getting smaller and smaller each time, and this one came smaller still. It feels weightless, although does not look especially cheap. The picture is very good, through component video on our old-fashioned SD CRT 27″ Toshiba. Please note that this player *does not* have a HD output. However, because it fits the description and its task in our home perfectly, I am not knocking off any points. For now, well recommended. I will be sure to post an update in case it breaks prematurely.

good player
Good player. fact that you can’t open the drawer with the remote is kind of annoying but the only reason you are going to open the drawer is to switch out the dvd in there with another one and for that you need to get up and go over there anyway so it is really a moot point. Bought this item at Best buy for $40 about a year ago. Bought it because it said “plays for sure” on the box. I play mostly dvd-r’s so I wanted something that would play as many old, chewed up or discs burned on my computer. It played so many discs that my old mitsubishi and my philips hd player would buzz, click and freeze up on that I bought a second one for my girlfriends bedroom when she needed a new one.

Media Type Information incorrect
It plays DvDs fine, but when you try to play a Blu Ray it will not play. I first tried dvd, ran fine, then a blu ray and it would not engage. So I tried a dvd again and it ran fine. So if your looking at this item to put it simply ignore Media type, as it is purely a dvd player. Although thinking about it again the media type could have been a generic statement for this type of product. Whatever the case be aware of this slight detail enjoy.
