Good Unit But Not Perfect
Metal case, great picture and sound but remote must be aimed close and directly in front or no response. And does “lockup” now and then on perfect discs. All and all I like it.

Very confusing and unhelpful remote and on-screen menus
I’m not an expert on evaluating the picture quality, so that’s not what this review is about. But I have owned a number of DVD/Blu-ray players and this is by far the most confusing in terms of the remote and on-screen menus. It is extremely difficult to find information that seems essential, most particularly the disc menus: do you press the Pop-Up Menu, or the Home button, or maybe the Top Menu? Sometimes, it seems that none of them work, and sometimes it seems to change from DVD to DVD. And for more specific information, do you hit Status, or Options, or HDR Settings? I’ve owned a few Sony machines, and they are much more direct, simple to use, and intuitive.Another bug, in my opinion, when watching an older DVD, particularly for films in a non-widescreen format, the machine will occasionally shrink the image so it does not fill the entire screen either horizontally, which is understandable, but also not vertically, which is not, at least to me.

Packaging and shipping
So far the unit works as described. What I would comment on is the packaging and shipping. This is the second unit that I have ordered. The first was returned because it had a big dent in the top and the packaging looked as iff it had been in a war. The second unit I have kept so far. The packaging on it was also very rough- another war. It however did not have any physical damage. I am still running it through it’s paces to make sure it will continue to perform.

It works, that’s about all.
Really not impressed with this player. The menu system is terrible and you can’t change the icons on the home screen which means you can’t put Netflix/Prime/YouTube on the home screen. You have to get to them by clicking the network service option and then picking the service you want. A minor annoyance but one you will have basically every single time you use this product.Speaking of services, if you want something other than those three services you can forget it. The number of available apps is incredibly small. I wish I could add iQIYI, WeTV, Youku or Vicki to watch Chinese shows but none of them are available. Probably not a big deal to many buyers but these are huge apps with giant user bases and they are included on basically every Android device out there. Why Panasonic can’t include them is beyond me.It plays 4k and can connect to Prime and YouTube so I’ll keep it for that, but my $30 Android streaming device does everything (other than play blurays) better than this does. Kind of pathetic for the price.

No cool with .mkv files
This player works fine with blu-ray midia with DTS-HDMA or ATMOS audio tracks. However, if the same content is written in an mkv file and attached to the unit trough the USB port, the sound disappears. Hope Panasonic will soon provide a fix for this issue.

outstand color quality
if your looking for a high end player that plays dvd and blue ray this is it . I was blown away by the picture quality . the streaming apps included are worthless though , but I knew that going in . If you want this for steaming apps look elsewhere. This blows away my old Sony Blue ray that bit the dust , seems every sony I ever had lasted 5 years and died , hoping this is better . This does not come setup right out of the box , search You tube for this player really helped me set this up properly . Highly recommended best bang for the buck

This is a great blu-ray player
This player is a great 4K player, it also upscales most of the discs I play, and I get decent to great results depending on what it is given to work with. I is sometimes a bit noisy, at least until the disc starts playing. The button placement is not good, the Netflix and stop buttons are in the middle of the remote and I have accidentally hit them a number of times. The User Interface is very simple, and easy enough to navigate. If you want to play videos from a thumb drive (or whatever they call them now) you will have to pull the front cover all the way down to insert the thumb drive into the USB slot. I cannot speak for music or CDs as I have not tried them yet. If your TV has Dolby Vision I would spend the few bucks more and get the Panasonic 820.

Many issues with this 4K player…..
BAD:1. Must go through hoops to set subtitle…there is no 1 button press on the RC to just set the subtitle2. Will not recognize many pristine regular BluRay discs, making this unit useless for that purpose, also may or may not play a regular DVD.3. May start off playing a regular BR disc, but then freeze….power must be shut off, then start from scratch to hopefully finish the BR disk.4. Very limited on type of files that can be played from a portable HDD or streamed…..plays only basic audio DD or DTS.5. The remote control is too small, confusing, and it should be back lighted so it can be used in the dark.6. Good luck with the super complicated initial setup…too many poorly explained options.7. Product page clearly indicates ‘Voice Control’ via Alexa/google, and the User Manual alludes to it, yet there are absolutely no instructions on how to do it..may be a huge PIA for limited functionality.GOOD:1. If lucky, it may play certain videos from a portable HDD or stream and convert to 4K.2. If lucky enough to play a regular BR disc or DVD, the upscale to 4K should look good.3. If it does play a 4k BR disc it should look visually good.4. Has a USB in the rear for up to 4TB HDD and a USB in front for small flash drive.COMMENTS:1. I have not played enough 4k BR discs to evaluate the players long term performance for this type of disc playback, but it has too many issues when trying to play other media.

Slow, painfully slow.
I do not recommend this player.I’ve it for about 6 months, intending to use as my primary media player and streaming device. I expected a lot more. The user interface (UI) is dated, clunky, non-intuitive and not customizable (as far as I can tell)- it doesn’t go to the last thing running at power-up: you have to press a button to start, wait a few seconds, a menu might come up, if you press again too soon, the presses might queue up and you have to wait and possibly undo, but you accidentally choose the wrong thing (i.e. a different streaming service), you have to wait the start up time to even get the option to quit. Seen similar issues with other streaming devices, but the response time is particularly bad.Picture quality from streaming, DVDs, and Blu-Ray is great, though very prone to errors, particularly on DVDs- if you get an error, you have to wait- appearing to just lock up. It seems to be trying to resolve, but the remote is unresponsive while it is working.I got it because of the recomendation via Wirecutter. They let me down.

Picture quality is amazing!!
Very easy to use. The video quality is amazing. The apps though are lacking, but with a smart TV, there is really no need. I really like being able to play videos off of a flash drive on the front of the Blu-ray player, and being able to connect devices via Wi-Fi.To sum it I, I am very happy with my purchase!

Quick Solution is Reassuring – Recommended
I had a software bug where the graphic that showed the remote buttons’ purpose was tattooed on the lower left of the screen. Searched for the model and the Panasonic manual came up right away. This gave me a quick reset method for my model (DP-UB420). Due to the easily found easy solution, I am real happy with Panasonic.Otherwise this is just an easy player to allow you to focus on your content. Seems to only save bookmarks for 4k but not Blu Ray, maybe that is typical?I am using a Samsung Q80T65 TV that uses HDR10+ (not Dolby Vision) and the visible shadows seem to line up with the expectations of others on the internet (FWIW). I thought of buying a player with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision but they are twice the cost and, if the future brings my an OLED TV, I can just have another with Dolby Vision.

Great Player; Garbage Remote and UI
Update: a little over a year later and the disc tray no longer functions. I’ve contacted their support who notified me that it will need to be serviced by their repair center in Florida. The cost to just get an estimate is $50, let alone the additional charges to fix it and shipping charges. Not even worth fixing it for me, this is now a hunk of plastic collecting dust. Steer clear folks. The player does what it’s supposed to do, it plays both 4K and Blu Ray discs perfectly. However, the experience of operating it is greatly reduced do to the atrocious remote control design and an awful user interface. These are the biggest issues with the remote:-No subtitle button. You need to menu dive in order to turn on subtitles.-Where you would typically find the back button (on the left side) is instead the Option button. The Back button is on the right side… so yeah, you’ll be seeing that ugly Option menu a lot.-By far the biggest issue is the Netflix button right above the direction arrows, which I believe I’ve hit accidentally every single time I’ve picked up the thing. One would think the button above the up arrow would be Home, but it is in fact Netflix because you know you spent over $200 to stream Netflix. I think I’m going to try and pull the button out altogether.A couple other random issues:-There’s a noticeable lag when changing Audio tracks.-You can’t change the system time off setting (you are stuck with the default, which I believe is 20 minutes).Overall, it does the thing it’s supposed to do well, but it’s plagued by boneheaded “design” choices.

A Great Picture with a Clunky Interface
I think the picture with a 4K disk looks better than some more expensive players.I soured on it because the voice assistant talks 3X times as normal, and there are no instructions on switching to Alexa. This is a gimic if you’re playing audio through a receiver at reference because it wouldn’t hear you.I wanted to use it to pause the disc when I was close. This is a job for a Firestick where you are talking through the remote. The worse part is the 90s interface for apps such as Amazon Prime Video or Netflix. Again, use the Firestick.Bottom line: It is a good value; the picture is great but use some other device for streaming if you can.

An AMAZING 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player
First of all, do NOT use this as a streaming device! Go buy a NVIDIA Shield and all your streaming issues go away forever. Buy this as a wonderful 4K Blu-ray player! It has a mode called “HDR Optimizer” that Panasonic claims will do a better job with HDR than I can, and they aren’t kidding! I turned that on and went through many light and dark scenes in the first Hobbit movie. At no time was it so dark I couldn’t tell what was going on anywhere in the scene (my pet peeve with dark scenes in movies), and at no time was it so bright that it seemed in any way washed out. It just looked fantastic, and I can’t wait to watch all six Lord of the Rings movies on it. I can’t speak to hardware longevity since I just got it, but there is nothing to complain about the results it provides. Highly recommended.

Great player from Panasonic
I purchased this player to replace my previous Panasonic player which is still working after around 10 years, this player can play 4k discs which my previous one couldn’t. The picture is excellent which I find is consistent with Panasonic players, and the remote has a number of channels to choose from if you have more than one Panasonic player. Menus are straight forward. my only complaint is that I would like a composite video out on the player so I could setup the next video to play, in my home cinema without effecting the video playing. Unfortunately all the brands have dropped the composite output, so it becomes a mute point, in choosing a player.

Superb DVD Player
This is an excellent HD and 4k dvd player. The processor’s image quality performance is superb, with the same great upscaling to 4k as Panasonic’s high end units and that is the main reason to buy it. While there is a nice amount of options in the settings menu, this is a bare bones unit and not a device to use for streaming or web searching as media choices are limited and the Viara operating system, along with the homescreen are outdated. In addition, Panasonic no longer provides voice control service through Google or Alexa for this Blu-ray player. As long as you are only using this to play your disks, this unit is a great value and performer.

Cheap, plastic, with a crude interface—but it will actually play 4K Blu-Ray discs
The unit has a plastic shell, making it light and flimsy-feeling.The user interface is absolutely horrid. It is ugly. It is slow. The Sony UBP-X800 4K player I had before had a more attractive and intuitive user interface. At first, this player could not communicate with my LG television, beyond turning it on or off. Having control over television volume with one’s video player remote is quite standard, and I knew there had to be a way. The documentation included with the player is fairly worthless. However, as is the case with many things these days, the actual owner’s manual is available online as a PDF. The English translation for the manual leaves a lot to be desired, but it was good enough for me to know what to do. The instructions for programming the remote are on page 8, and the codes needed for various brands are on page 44. These codes listed are for Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio. One may have to do a little homework to find a code for some other brand. Regardless, enter the two digit code on the number pad while holding down the television power button on the video player remote, and that volume control starts working. As I said, I had a Sony UBP-X800, which I bought years ago, when there were very few 4K titles available. It has a solid steel chassis and lovely user interface. Its remote worked well enough with our LG television. However, it was prone to locking up during disc playback, during streaming playback, and MP4 videos would lock up when the inserted USB stick would inevitably overheat. Plain DVD discs failed to play about half the time. I have several brand-new 4K videos it would refuse to recognize or play. These same discs play just fine in the Panasonic DP-UB420-K.Some brand new discs may stutter and stop playing at some point on ANY player, because some brand new discs are covered in a oily film after production. These discs can be cleaned to restore playback.Sony 4K players are notoriously inconsistent when it comes to 4K playback. I donated mine to Goodwill, and will never buy another. The Panasonic DP-UB420-K is absolutely a cheap 4K player, but at least it actually plays 4K discs. Most content I watch is streaming; however, I enjoy collecting and watching my favorite films from disc. It is nice to finally have a working player after so many years.

Excellent player when it works *updated*
*Update: The problem got worse the more I used it, so I decided to file a warranty claim with Panasonic. I was nervous they would not be able to replicate the problem, but they must have seen it since they sent me a replacement unit. The new unit has worked well so far. I’m hoping the first one I had was just defective. Updated the rating to 4 stars.Original review: I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase this player. I needed a player with 2 hdmi outputs so I could send the 4k video to my projector and the audio to my older receiver. This feature is only available on a handful of players and is mostly found on higher end players. My decision came down to this player and the Sony 800mkii. There are a couple of differences between the two and many reviews about each. This player went on sale so I pulled the trigger. After connecting the player, it guided my through a simple setup to get started. I went through the menu settings and configured it to my liking. I played numerous discs and most played without issue. On a couple of discs, the video would breakup for a second or two then clear up. I did some research and found that some 4k discs could have a layer of film on them from when they were made that could cause this issue. So I used a microfiber cloth and gently wiped them before playing. This seemed to help, but some discs still had occasional issues.I called Panasonic tech support to verify this wasn’t a firmware issue or something I was missing. The tech support wasn’t very helpful, only suggesting that I would need to send the player in for repair. I have not yet sent it in for repair as I am concerned they won’t be able to replicate the issue as it only happens occasionally on some discs and it would cost me around $25 to ship the unit.I have decided to just deal with the occasional issues and clean discs thoroughly before playing. I hope a future firmware update will resolve this issue completely as it seems is might be something related to how the player is reading the discs. That being said, every player I looked at had some reviews indicating some sort of issue. When the player is working correctly, the picture quality is excellent on bath 4k discs and standard Blu rays. The streaming services work ok, but tend to be very slow when loading. I don’t use this device for streaming since it is pretty limited. It has prime and netflix as the major services, but lacks Disney plus.I would rate this player a 3.5 overall.

I’m not sure I like it.
The first thing I did not expect or really like is the TINY footprint. I guess you cannot tell from the photos of the unit on the Amazon site that it is tiny. I expected a traditional 17″ or so wide—traditional AV product. In the photo I have attached the unit is sitting on top of my Yamaha receiver so you can compare the size.As soon as you start the unit up you are presented with an option to use “THE VOICE” to help with setup. Dummy me. I clicked Yes to that option. A super annoying 2X speed woman’s voice goes off on a tangent to help you with setup. It’s awful and you have to really study the manual to turn her off. That’s of course after you download the REAL manual which does not come with the unit.Another annoyance—There are no useable play, stop etc. buttons on the physical unit itself. You HAVE to use the remote control. I like to put a music CD in and then push a play button on the unit. But there is no button to push on the unit. So you have to go chase down the remote. This is a pretty pricey player. I paid about $250. That’s too much. I see some others on here got it for 1/2 that.Anyway, I’m not sure I like it much and will need more time to decide. Seems like other players I reviewed have their own issues, so…

Above my expectations
I’ve only had the player for a week or so, but so far it is exceeding my expectations. The 4K is an upgrade over the 1080p player that I had before, but the non4K content is what really surprised me. The upscaling that it can do on not just regular Blu rays, but older DVD’s is very impressive. I hate the phrase “breath new life”, but it has me rewatching a lot of stuff on older formats and enjoying them again. I think if you have a TV that can show 4K and a library of previous disc formats then it’s definitely worth a buy.

It works; menus are old school
It works well, but the menus and software seem like they are about 20 years out of date. Movie playback is great, if a little finicky. Does not recover very well from small scratches on, say, a rental DVD.

Two Great Reasons to Buy This Player – Super Closed Caption Functionality
This unit is a huge improvement over my 8 year old Panasonic that looks identical, even the remote. It can take an older rather blurry DVD produced by the BBC/Acorn and render it crisp and new looking.Another absolutely wonderful feature is the CC (Closed caption) button on the remote. Some of these same BBC Acorn DVDs come with captioning embedded in them, but they’re not available via the main menu as in most US produced DVD/Blu-Rays. Somehow in the UK they play using a remote, but I’ve never been able to access the captions on these before. This button allows access, which for a deaf person is a wonderful thing. It’d be even better if the remote were back-lit.I bought the Atevon 4K HDMI Cable 6 Foot recommended in another review; I agree this really enhances the picture.Someone asked why I didn’t just buy a cheap player, since “everything streams these days”, (no it doesn’t); these two improvements above, which are huge for me, are why.Update: 10/10/22: An older movie that I’ve never really been able to watch is the US-made Hallmark produced “The Love Letter” (1998) starring Jennifer Jason Leigh. Box says it has CC, but it’s not on the disc menu – people even complain about it in their reviews of the DVD. The fantastic “cc button” on the upper right hand side of the remote magically made the never-before-seen Closed Captions appear, and suddenly I could understand why this is such a popular movie.

Outstanding
This is an Amazing Value. For less than $250.00 (What I paid for this New.) you get a Premium 4K 3D Blu-ray player. What makes this Better than the Best Samsung, LG, Sony, etc…, Models is the Video Processing Chip exclusive to Panasonic. It has the ability to Greatly Boost the Picture Quality of DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K DVDs.Non HDR content, SDR content can be converted to HDR if you choose to in the settings. This is a Huge improvement in Video Quality of DVDs and Blu-Rays. The HDR on 4Ks looks better than on other Models too.So by buying this instantly you Video collection will look much better than it ever has looked.Another exclusive feature is the ability to choose from 4 different TV / Projector types according to their Brightness. There is a Setting for OLED TVs, and for Brightness levels down to the Special Projector mode. This setting will give you the best possible Picture Quality according to the TV / Projector that you own.The Negative reviews I think are from people who did not understand how to correctly setup their TVs / Projectors for this 4K Blu-ray player. They couldn’t figure out how to set up the Blu-ray player. One of the Biggest mistakes people make is they don’t buy a Good Quality 4K HDMI Cable.Using the wrong cable will keep you from getting a 4K picture. Inferior cables will give you a bad picture.

Masters Degree REQUIRED to get the most out of this unit
The manual is online… get it ASAP.EASY setup is straight forward. Connect your HDMI 2.1 cable from the units HDMI 1 port (video & audio) to your 4k or better TV. (you should have NOT purchased this unit if you don’t have 4k or better unless you plan on getting one soon.) I’m using a 12′ cable from Walmart actually. This unit has wifi and RJ45 networking capability. Plug in a cat 5 or better cable if you choose to hardwire your network and connect t your switch/router/hub. Plug the unit in and follow the onscreen instructions.OK you’re “ready” to play your discs.NOW!!!! if you want to dig into the advanced features that manual you downloaded is a starting place. You’ll likely find https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/bd/faq/vc/setupAA.html most helpful for Alexa… This is where this unit lost a star. It’s possibly easier to obtain the nuclear launch codes than to register your email AND unit to use the “skill”. First one needs to register their email Then verify the email by following the link panasonic emails. MOST sites are good with that but panasonic then requires you to activate your panasonic account. Then and only then can you register the unit…. which requires the ID and password buried in the system settings of the player…. just follow the link closely. The remote….. has almost as many keys as a laptop keyboard. Eventually you’ll only need a few of them… like power on/off and play/pause and eject. The menu…. WOW WOW WOW… the base screen is simple enough… after that finding things can get confusing. My biggest gripe (and it may be a matter of finding a feature) is that when adding other services (beyond the pre installed Netflix, prime and a few others) is that they are added in the order added. There doesn’t seem to be a way to change the order. They do offer two “after hours” services so you probably want to save those for later to keep them off the first of four services screens. Speaking of those “adult” services… all two of them… to be able to add them you’ll need to set the parental password. Just what you need another password. I counted a need for no less than 4 for this unit never mind the passwords for any services you’ll add/subscribe to.Speaking of services… currently there doesn’t seem to be much of a selection.. no hulu, pluto, directTV NOW, Spectrum (Time Warner) or others…. maybe there will be more in a future update?Front panel has a USB 2.0 port. Back of unit has a USB 3.0 port… I’m guessing 3.1 or true 3.0. Supposedly one can connect a 4 TB drive but you’ll need one with its own power supply as the player does NOT provide power per the manual. Additionally the unit is supposedly capable of accessing network shares…. I haven’t tested this but can confirm it does NOT connect to a WD NAS EX4 natively. The manual indicates it will support DLNA… I’ll look for that in the future… I have Emby Premiere… (one of those maybe in the future apps) that I access through a Fire Stick. There is a 2nd HDMI out (audio only) that in theory provides higher quality sound than the HDMI 1 which is video & audio. There’s also an optical out. Things will get interesting once I get the AVR I want… I’ll need to determine the best way to cross connect everything with limited ports… Most AVR at my price point only support one optical in and one out.

Unlike other brands, this Panasonic player plays 4K discs smoothly.
If you do some research on 4K blu-ray disc players, you will quickly discover that many 4K disc players either skip or freeze often when playing 4K discs…… even though the players are “4K Ultra HD disc players”.Unlike my Sony UBP-X700M 4K Ultra HD player, this Panasonic device plays my 4K discs smoothly.

Everything about this 4k player screams quality and excellent, logical design
Unlike my last 4k player, the Sony x700, bought early this year, this Panasonic is head and shoulders better. It does everything it does better than the Sony–not just a little better–a lot better. It’s real close to perfect, imo. Don’t buy the x700 Sony player unless you plan to start a betting pool on whether or not your streaming movies from Netflix and Amazon or your DVDs, your BluRays, or your 4k discs will lock up and freeze–or you want to take bets on how often a single stream or disc will lockup and freeze. The only relief for the Sony x700 when it locks up (not if) is a power off. I’m not anti-Sony by any means, in fact I originally bought the x700 because my streaming and BluRay experience with my prior Sony BluRay player was excellent–not a single freeze or lockup in years of use–right up until Amazon Prime Video dropped the player due to its obsolescence. If you are skeptical, just Bing/Google/Duck “Sony x700 freezes” or something similar and you will be amazed at how many similar reports you will discover. Unfortunately, for me, I bought the x700 before I did my usual due diligence on my experience with my last Sony player/streamer because that experience had been so good. One guy I read commented that he had never had a lockup with his x700 over a 17-month period; another guy I read commented in various AV forums that he had to swap his x700 out *five times* before he got one that wouldn’t freeze. It’s such a common experience with the x700 that Sony even addresses the freezes on the official support site for the x700, and provides power-cycling instructions. The only thing the UB420-k doesn’t have that some people want these days is Dolby Vision support. I don’t have a DV television, just an HDR 10 television, and didn’t want to pay $200 more for the UB-820 just to get Dolby VIsion support…;) (The x700 supports Dolby Vision, but in a constantly freezing product, who cares?)Even the settings pages for the UB420 are simple, direct, extremely easy to understand, and every setting has an explanation included on-screen. The interface couldn’t be simpler to use. Just tick the feature boxes down the list and the UB-420 does it right. (The Sony x700 setting pages were enough to confuse even me, and I like to think I know what I’m doing…;))One last comparative comment: the remote for the UB420 is far superior to the one included with the x700–because it not only is ~33% larger, which allows you to feel your way around the buttons comfortably, it also means the keys are often larger and spaced further apart. It’s very comfortable in my hands in use.I read the negative comments about the UB-420 in this forum and they left me shaking my head…;) Not even close to my own experience. It works seamlessly and perfectly with my Sony AV receiver-amp, as well, btw.Last, after ~48 total hours of disc playing consisting of DVD movies, BluRay movies and 4k movies, it’s a joy to report not a single lockup or freeze! (I use a ROKU Ultra to stream these days.)

Great picture even when used just for streaming
This 4k Blu-ray player has an excellent video processor that converts all video output to 4k resolution. We mainly use this player to stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube 4k movies and other videos products and the picture output far exceeds any other steaming box on our 75″ TV (mainly a Roku 4k Ultra). Streaming brands rarely mention their 4k capabilities, I know why, this player beats them all providing a great picture! I would buy this player if I only needed steaming capability with no actual need for the 4k player portion. The only disappointment is that the player is only capable of streaming the companies already mentioned with a browser, and some oddball channels. Bottom line; if you want great PQ and a 4k player you cannot go wrong with this player.

If the picture is everything this is a winner, but…
I’ve been using an upscaling Sony for a while, but found (as so many seem to have) that Sony’s players are problematic and often short-lived, so I turned to this Panasonic when the Sony had frozen too many time. I suppose I am pleased in that the image is beautiful, and both for Blu-Ray discs and for well-mastered DVDs. Alas I wish my praise could go further. The instructions are simply awful, so what should be easy wasn’t for me. Even getting it ‘online’ was a chore because the word “password” is not used — instead speaking about an ‘authorization” or some such.Disc loading is not particularly fast and there is an upper window that keeps opening telling you that it is a Blu Ray or a DVD. I mean you don’t know this?Something is made of the players use with Alexa — but that is so clumsy and takes such long commands that why bother? All may seem niggling complaints, and certainly the combination of a moderate price with a superb picture mitigates that somewhat. But to this user only somewhat. I wish I could offer higher praise.

The Disk tray had issues
I only had this player for 2 years and In the beginning it had a problem playing disks right away for some reason it wasn’t reading them correctly and its response time was slow and then it got worse and then the player started damaging my disks it left deep gouge rings around the Layer or my disks. I spent a lot of money on some of those box sets. I’m very displeased….

Pillar Bars on Normal DVDs (480p) Could Not Be Avoided and Firmware Upgrade Didn’t Work
There were several problems with this unit out of the box:Samsung 65″ 4K TV . Previous Samsung 4K Blu Ray player worked fine. for 8 years.1. The Firmware Upgrade failed: site unavailable.2. The Streaming Applications produced only errors (and the wired (ethernet) connection was was good.3. Normal DVDs (480p) could only be viewed in Pillar Box Format (black bars). There was no provision for Pan on Scan or Stretch the video.4. The Close Captioning was tiny and no size adjustment was available (normal DVDs)In other words, it might be a decent 4K Blu Ray player (who knows because the Firmware Upgrade was unavailable), but it was totally useless for my boxed sets of TV Series, like The West WingThe user interface as non-intuitive compared to others I have used (Sony, Samsung, TCL).In general, this was an extremely disappointing experience. I returned the unit the next day, after having fought the noted problems for 3 hours the prior day. The refund process was painless and efficient, thanks Amazon. (Assuming the UPS Store actually delivers the return.N.B. I purchased a Sony BDP-S1700 on my way to the UPS store, and when I got home, it was plug and play, no problems upgrading firmware, no pillar bars, and the streaming apps worked fine.

Only Lasted 21 Months
Great picture. Online access was rock steady. But, it is dead now. Stopped playing discs. I applied a firmware update and still no-go. Lasted 21 months. I am a Panasonic fanboy, but very disappointed in this product.Only positive is that I did not pay the current price of $247. Panasonic, do better.

Great machine
Some of us still like watching our programs on disc. Ditto for listening to music. The Panasonic is very good at both. I had a player from another well-known company. This machine is better. They are the some price roughly, but the Panasonic is better. What’s more, the other player didn’t let as long. Think about it.

Best DVD Player
This is a great DVD Player. It plays good DVD’s. The wifi capabilities works a 100 times better than our crappy LG smart TV. Our new smartbLG TV constantly has problems and constantly crashes. The wifi capabilities on the Panasonic DVD helps to replace our smart TV.We also use it to watch TV series on DVD that we can’t always download online right now.Absolutely the best DVD player we’ve ever had. Much better than Sony.

Good player
I liked the picture a lot. I didn’t like that you have to go through Hell to get the optical to work. It played the sound for the company, but not the movies. It needs a better setup for that.

Great UHD Blu Ray Player for the Money
This a great uhd blu ray player for the price of $169. The picture and audio are both great. I don’t like that some of the main features are turned off by default, such as hdr and 4.4.4. In order to make changes to the detailed settings, you have to stop play and open the tray. In would be better if settings could be made simply by stopping play of a disc and allowing access to the menus. The remote control is full featured but rather bulky. The player doesn’t support Dolby Vision but it is not marketed to support it and I find that to be fine.

Best Blu-ray Player I Have Owned
***4+ years of use update: ZERO issues playing DVD, Blu-ray & 4k discs. Have not had to do anything but push the power button and insert the disc & play. Amazing picture quality. NO freezing or glitches like my previous Sony players.***I bought a new 65″ 4k TV and a new 4K AppleTv in 2019. I have owned 2 generations of Sony’s middle to higher end blu-ray players and have experienced loud disc spin noise plus a ton of software buggy issues with both models. Then they dumped support for Hulu. YouTube and Netflix poor to ok reliability, with the YouTube app often not working for weeks at a time. Disc playback was ok IF it didn’t hangup/crash on you on initial disc insertion. So NO MORE Sony Blu-ray players for me. Researched and came across a lot of happy folks using these Panasonic models. Around the holidays it was only $149 Prime so ordered it and glad I did. Picture quality is outstanding and no issues like I was experiencing with the Sony player. Easy setup with plugging in power and HDMI cables (One is provided with the player but I bought a pair of “Atevon High Speed 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 Cable – HDCP 2.2” 6ft cables – ASIN B06XP129CT). Was able to get it connected up to my WiFi network with no trouble. Updated the firmware & good-to-go. One issue I did encounter was the Panasonic remote’s power and volume buttons to control the TV did not work with my Samsung Q80 TV. Page 8 of the DP-UB820 players “advanced owners manual” (google it) explained how to reprogram the remote control – Hold the power button down and input the 2 digit tv code (Samsung #s: 20/21/22) page 26 supplied the different TV brand’s codes. Now buttons are functional with my TV. I am not planning on streaming with any apps on this unit because I am very happy with the quality and ease of the 4k AppleTV. (R.I.P. Sony Blu-Ray player – & good riddance…) Hope this review helps!

Plays 4K fine but…
All of my 4K disk played great. Picture and sound was all good. Playing Blu-rays however was hit-and-miss. Some disk that play fine on my other Blu-ray players would not load on this unit. I decided to hook up my older Blu-ray player also and use it for all of my non-4K disk and only use this Panasonic for 4Ks.I tried the Sony 4K player and while I did not see any problems with it playing Blu-rays, it would often crash while playing 4Ks so this Panasonic seams to be the better choice as long as you can set up a separate Blu-ray player. I intend on keeping this Panasonic and hoping there is a software fix one day or I will just keep using my dual player setup until the technology improves in the future.

GREAT WHEN IT WORKS
Sterling picture and sound quality – when it works. Bought the 15-blu-ray Hitchcock box set and it would not boot up a single one of the discs. Got a replacement box and it would only boot up one. Got my 3 year old Sony 4K player out of the closet and it booted up all 15. Not sure what to do, guess I’ll approach Panasonic support and try to get it replaced.

4K Blu-ray is finicky
Like all Blu-ray players, great picture and sound – assuming the source material had it. But I’ve noticed that 4k (Ultra-HD) blu-ray are much more sensitive to dust and fingerprints than standard 2k Blu-ray.Is this the player’s fault? I don’t know. But where ever the problem is, it detracts from what should be a premium home video experience.Plus, the difference between 2k and 4k aren’t that visible. Not nearly the difference between DVD and Blu-ray. I probably have a dozen 4k Blu-rays, and I can’t make out the difference.YMMV.

This UHD blu ray player does an excellent job in producing a good picture.
I bought this as part of my home theater overhaul, and couldn’t be more happy with it. I’ve read some complaints about the remote but I generally just use power on, eject, play, pause, and stop and that’s not too complex in my opinion. This unit supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG high dynamic range, and that matches my TV’s spec exactly. Planet Earth II looks spectacular being played through it, and the sound quality is outstanding (I played the Eagles Farewell Tour I with a DTS-MA soundtrack and it looked and sounded amazing). I am pleased with my purchase. The menu is a little complicated but I just took the time to set it up and now I don’t need to go into that part of the menu – just a set-it-and-forget-it type of thing.

Great for what it is but clearly overpriced
I’m very satisfied with my UB420. I needed something to play my 4k UHD discs and it does that beautifully. With that being said, the menu looks like it’s straight out of 2007 and there really aren’t any other features besides 4k streaming which my tv does already. It’s crazy they priced this at $247. I bought mine used in “good” condition (box was damaged but player was brand new) for $170 and wouldn’t recommend anyone pay a dollar over.

Good…but
Just received this 4k player and upon arrival the box was beat up. Luckily no exterior damage to the device. I got to test the product with Blu ray and DVD. It does enhance the picture on both DVD and Blu Ray. However not so much on 4k disc. When it comes to watching Netflix and Amazon prime the picture looks amazing. My complaint was that after connecting to Amazon prime app the audio went out on one of my Blu Ray movies I had previously watched. And then Netflix audio didn’t want to work either. I called for a replacement and after unplugging and plugging in the device the audio was back. Just test the Blu ray player thoroughly to make sure you have no picture or audio issues. I would give it five stars if the product arrived in mint condition and not damaged.
