Very quiet
This unit was purchased to replace a Samsung MG11H2020 which was a noisy rattle trap from the get go and only lasted maybe a year. Prior to that was a GE Spacesaver which lasted 3 years and is currently up to about $500. Needless to say I’m not overly pleased with the service from microwaves. Time will tell on the Panasonic but many complaints were essentially “out of box” failures which I did not have. I gave it high marks because it worked, it’s very quiet and it seems to reheat things (like my coffee umpteen times) faster than either the GE or the Samsung. Will update as time progresses.1/10/2021 update. The unit is still very functional and there have been no serious problems so I’m going to leave the rating at 5 stars. However, I don’t think the unit is quite as quiet as when it was new. A bit more serious is the condition of the touch pad. Apparently Panasonic placed a plastic membrane over the various buttons on the touch pad and that membrane has worn through on the start button and is starting to wear through on some of the other frequently used buttons. This has not affected the function of the unit but may portend future issues. Also, the unit gets pretty warm on extended runs at high power (think baked potatoes). Again, the function has not been affected.

nice microwave
I love the interior of this microwave the best of all those I have owned. It is easy to clean but also does not appear to be as prone to the lining chipping or pealing. That said some of my favorite features are not present; for instance “hot buttons” that with a single touch will run the machine for 1, 2, 3 or up to 6 minutes without having to enter a bunch of numbers. This is convenient and time saving. Also, the power button… on others, you can press power and pick 1-10 but this one you have to press the button over and over to get to the number you want counting down from 10. These are small inconveniences and easily overlooked for the best insides I have experienced.

Very nice microwave, BUT had a strong toxic odor (maybe ours was just defective)
We wanted to leave a 5-star review, but couldn’t because this oven has a “burning plastic” odor that didn’t go away after several days of use. The smell ended up in our food and tea and throughout the house! We tried heating a bowl of water and vinegar, then wiping down the interior – the toxic smell remained, so we had to return the oven 🙁

Smaller size microwave, same interior space!
Great for apartments! Smaller size takes up less counter space with the same interior capacity! Runs very quietly, cooks efficiently. The only drawback for me is that when I press a number for time, say 3 minutes, you have to press 3-0-0. My old microwave would automatically know, when I pressed 3; I meant 3 minutes.

Returned first order
First order was damaged, but return and replacement was extremely easy. Works great with more wattage than our previous microwave. Only drawback is the “time” light. In a dark kitchen at night, it will almost light up the entire room. We put a roll of paper towels in front of it to cut down on the basically blinding light! 😆

Good microwave except for loud beep
Small footprint and basic features was all I wanted in a new microwave. I got all that in this model. My only complaint is the beep that can be heard from space. Seriously, why? My plan now is to take it apart and muffle the speaker somehow. Or maybe just remove it and put it in my truck.

Microwave does not have feature as advertised
Microwave did not have the “keep warm feature “ as stated in the key features in item description. I reached out to both Amazon and Panasonic but have not had response. I May return the microwave as the missing feature is the only reason I bought this microwave.

easy to use
I have had this microwave for about a month so its durability is yet to be determined but the Panasonic Compact Microwave Oven is simple to use without some of the confusing operations of other Microwaves plus so far it is not very noisy and cooks great.

WOW! What a great machine
Easy to use; dead silent; because the cavity is smaller than typical “micros” the heating power of 900w is better than the conventional 1000W micro that I bought

Panasonic NN-SB438S Compact Microwave Oven, 0.9 cft, Black Stainless Steel
I am giving this medium rating based on my experience to date with this machine.I bought this microwave based on my previous history with another oven that I had for 34 years. It was never repaired and worked perfect for my requirements.I have had this new product since October 2022. After reading all reviews positive/negative I decided to stay with a tried and true product. It worked fine up until recently. Now everytime I put something in the oven to reheat, I hear a loud noise as the motor starts and it continues until the over stops. This is not unlike the sound I was experiencing in my 34 year-old machine, and the reason I decided to buy a new one.I thought it was the plate hitting the wall (as it is a smaller interior than I am used to), but that does not seem to be problem.Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?Thank you for any and all feedback.

Limited Hot Keys
This is over-all a good, basic performer. Two small kvetches but not enough to cost the unit stars: what idiot used small-print medium gray lettering on an unlighted black background? Yeah, I’ll get used to the positioning of the keys eventually but in the meantime, I have to go looking for my readers and flip on the kitchen lights.Gripe number 2: a dark gray interior, making it a bit difficult to keep clean.

Where is the Stainless?
Where is the rest of the stainless? Ordered the stainless model but it’s all black except for the narrow band of stainless along the bottom of the microwave. Am returning unit but will give it a 3, looks well made and I like the small size vs. functions. But advertising is deceptive.

Almost impossible to see numbers and settings in low light
The microwave works just fine and is a good size – but unless you have it in an area with very strong light, its almost impossible to guess where the buttons are for settings. Mine is under a counter and sometimes I actually have to use my phone or a flashlight to find the right numbers and setting. Everything is very flush so often hit the wrong number by mistake. So – if you have lots of light, good eyesight and aim… then its just fine. But for me – this one is getting put into a rental unit I have and I’ll replace with a new one that is easier to use.

Good microwave
Good microwave though the only thing is the “auto cook” feature is a bit misleading. I wanted “auto sensor”. Auto cook does not automatically could your food based on humidity levels. It is just a preprogramed timer based on what level you set it at. Still satisfies though.

Excellent quality product–but!
Panasonic is my go-to brand in appliances because of the consistent quality; however, this microwave has such tiny operating numbers that are difficult for this senior to see and a touch pad that is so sensitive, it is difficult to push the exact spot to put in the time for microwaving something. In addition, the black interior discourages me because I like everything squeaky clean but the dark interior hides splatters! Much as I love the quiet and efficiency of this microwave oven, I will be returning it because I know in time I will become quite annoyed with an efficient product that is not really efficient in its operation.

Panasonic, what have you done?
I bought a Panasonic Microwave for my mother 35 years ago, and it lasted probably 20 years. She replaced it with another, and it’s still kicking out hot food on demand with no troubles. When my bride and I first got married 30 years ago, I bought one for our home. It lasted for 11 years, ending its usefulness when my then-10 year old daughter put a pot – a metal pot – of Cream of Wheat in there to reheat, destroying it AND the pot. Not finding another, we’ve been through a Sharp and 3 or 4 off-brand microwaves since.”Enough!” I said. “I’m getting another Panasonic!”After casting about looking for a unit that was about the same size as all those that went before it and a look that complements our kitchen …erm… “style”, I found this unit. Coolio! I ordered it up.It arrives exceedingly well packaged, and totally unblemished. The current wreck of a microwave was quickly ushered to the curb, and this beautiful Panasonic was plopped down in its place. The first few forays into producing microwaved foodstuffs went flawlessly! I couldn’t get over how QUIET it was. Oh, bliss! And then it started making The Noise. The strange, rhythmic noise emanating from the turntable drive. Kind of like a train-track kind of noise. It occurs whether the platter is in the unit or not. It’s definitely in the inner workings of the drive.Oh, Panasonic?! Why hath thou forsaken me?!I’m not planning to send it back as that will probably be a bigger PITA than listening to The Noise when it runs. And, so far, it has given no indication that The Noise is in any way compromising its performance or indicating that said performance has been compromised. It’s just there to remind me that even stalwart bastions of quality can and do lose their way over time; the top quality microwave purveyor of yesteryear can become the junk merchant of today…****UPDATE: The Noise has suddenly and miraculously ceased. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but at least it’s no longer an “I feel like a train conductor” thing. And thank you, Panasonic, for your assurances and your desire to evaluate the microwave, but I’m not sure you understand what the acronym “PITA” means. But again: thank you for your concern. If this beastie fails within its warranty, you’ll surely hear from me. If it does not: it wasn’t so expensive that I’d be willing to jump through any hoops – or, better: be without the convenience of a microwave whilst jumping through said hoops – to have it “evaluated”.

Good smallish unit that has limited features
When did microwaves start becoming the size of small cars? That’s what I wondered when checking out the dimensions on all these units. My apartment kitchen is a postage stamp sized affair with less counter space than a camper. I had an old Panasonic microwave that fit the small space I have for one and lived a good long life of 20 years dutifully heating Lean Cuisines and heating up forgotten cups of coffee. It just up and quit one day. The nerve! This replacement unit doesn’t live up to the old unit in that it does NOT have one touch cooking. The old unit you could just press “start” and it would start cooking for one minute. If you pressed “start” again it would add another minute and so on. This unit you have to enter in the time and then hit start. There’s a “quick 30 seconds” button – but that just puts 30 seconds on the clock and then you still have to hit “start”. There’s a mysterious “more” and “less” set of buttons that do not appear to add more or less time to cooking – but I’m sure they serve some purpose to a higher function that I am not interested in. I know the whole one touch issue makes me appear unbearably lazy – but you get used to a feature and then it’s gone and somehow that a few more button presses seem like punishment for wanting to heat something up. I simply want to put something inside the oven, close the door, start cooking with a touch or two, and then have it turn off with a solid beep. On the good side – it looks lovely and will work with both a black-themed or stainless-themed appliance set; it is small-ish and will fit in a tiny kitchen; it works well; it does not have a nagging beep that keeps reminding you to come back and get your stuff…one beep and then it’s all on you; and – finally, I no longer need a night light in the kitchen because the clock is so bright that I am sure they can see what time it is from space. Recommend!

OK Microwave
My old microwave (a 3 yo Toshiba that’s no longer made) died, and I had to make a quick selection to replace it ASAP. This microwave is the same size and has the same power as my old oven.I like that the lighted display (clock/time left) is bright. The microwave is easy to use and meets my basic needs just fine. I like that there’s a button to open the door. My old microwave had a handle, and liquids often spilled because it created movement every time the door was opened. I doubt I will ever I use most of the preset options. I use the microwave to heat water for tea, reheat food, and defrost. I don’t do any actual cooking in it.I dislike that it doesn’t have express cooking buttons. Every microwave I’ve owned has had them. It’s convenient to simply hit the 1 or 2 to cook at 100% power for a minute or two. But, with this oven you have to put in the full time and then hit start. Same thing for adding 30 seconds – have to hit start after that too. It’s minor, but I would not have purchased this oven if I’d realized the feature was missing (my bad for not reading the description thoroughly). The interior light in the oven is extremely dim, made worse by the fact that the interior is dark grey. The exterior buttons are not easy to see. And, the black exterior REALLY shows fingerprints. (My old oven was black as well, and didn’t.)So, this microwave is fine. But, I would do more research and make a different purchase if I had to buy again. There are many options in this size and price range.

Control Panel
I have not had much chance to use this product yet. However, I quickly discovered, at first thinking that it was a repairable defect, that there was no lighting in the control panel. The surrounding kitchen lighting from above, behind, and to the side does not illuminate the panel, actually making it harder to see. I need to use a flashlight directly on the panel to be able to see/use it. Despite how well this unit may or may not work, having to use a flashlight to operate it makes it an enduring source of irritation.

Ergonomics need improvement
The door only opens 90 degrees, therefore the door is in the way to reach in with two hands to remove something from inside. When the door is open all the way, two parts of the latching mechanism protrude from the back of the door into the space needed to reach in. Occasionally, the shirt sleeve snags on these parts. Appliance doors should open at least 110 degrees for easy access to the inside. The “sweet area” for the controls on the touch pad is very small and therefore requires the operator to be very precise when pressing. Until the operator learns exactly where to press, he or she will find they may have to press a single button couple of times before finding the small “sweet spot” where the appliance accepts input.

Broken in just 3 months
Bought this in March this year. Overall, it’s a nice little microwave. Just me in this apartment so we’re not dealing with a high traffic, high demand environment. This past weekend, the push button handle broke. When I depress it to open the door, I need to also pull the top of the door to open it. Kind of a pain if you have butter or oil on your hands. I would give it a higher rating, but the fact that it’s broken a little beyond 3 months’ time, is no good. One reviewer mentioned that the display was bright. They weren’t kidding. I don’t need a night light in my kitchen. The display on this microwave does the job.

Excellent for the price
I decided not to pay a premium price for a replacement microwave. Second factor was the desire for a smaller footprint than former microwaves. Easy cleaning was a top factor. This microwave met all of the criteria. I especially like the interior finish. It is gray and has slightly curved edges meaning no cracks to capture food or moisture. Wiping out is a breeze. I really like the interior finish. Cooking power is great for my needs. Only disadvantage is that the keypad is not backlit. Means in the evening, it’s best to have a light on to see the keypad clearly. That takes it down one star. Otherwise it’s terrific.

Very Nice Microwave
My 1200 watt Panasonic finally died after 6 years of use. I think the ceramic fuse blew, but it was starting to get louder by the day and I knew it was going to stop working. This new one is only 900 watts but seems adequate for the purpose. Funny thing is, my older one was bigger and this new one is only 0.9CFT, yet they were about the same money. No complaints though. This new one is very quiet and has a nice brightly lit clock.

Don’t buy a black microwave!
This unit seems fine. It works well, it’s relatively easy to use; easy to set the power levels. The beeping when the cook time is over is a bit louder than we’d like, but if you’re ready and open the door at once, that stops the repeated beeps, which is good. However, the black surface with white lettering–which really is gray, because it’s not lighted, and is in a small font–makes it significantly more difficult to use that we’d like. Unless you have really sharp eyes, or your microwave is in a brightly lit spot–and maybe even then–find a white one.

Small but sacrificing features
I was looking for a small size microwave, but found out there aren’t many to choose from, and smaller sized units have less wattage to cook with. I had a 1100 watt and this model is only 900 watts. However, the size of this Panasonic microwave did meet my needs and turns out the 900 watts are adequate. I really don’t cook with it, just reheat foods and boil water.Noise level is another matter. I was surprised to hear how loud the door is when you open and close it. I’m sure there was no thought put into making a “soft” closing door. I like the push button lever to open it but the sound is very irritating. I never expected such a “ clunky harsh” sound when opening the door. And a more loud sound when closing it.One more missing feature, this model doesn’t have a light inside. I never thought how nice it is to have a light, but now I don’t have one, and I miss it.This model is easy to use. I like the quick 30 seconds button, to add additional time.I’m keeping this model because the price was right, but it would be a much better microwave if it also had the improved features listed above.

It suddenly stopped working completely after 7 months
This seemed to be a reasonably decent microwave oven. A few features were tricky to learn, but it worked pretty well. Until it suddenly didn’t. After only 7 months of reasonable use, it started making a horrible noise, and then completely stopped heating anything. What’s worse is that it seems to be impossible to reach Panasonic support. They have no phone number listed in the manual, only a link to their online support. Their web site doesn’t give a phone number either, nor an email address. The only option is a “Live Chat” with someone from the support team.First, even though it was during their operating hours, the chat was unavailable for a long while. Then, suddenly the page said “Chat is currently available”, so I filled in all the requested info and pressed “Request Chat”. I waited more than 2 hours with no response from an agent, until their business hours had ended. So I tried again the next morning. That time I waited FOUR hours, and no agent showed up.So apparently customer support is totally useless, or maybe non-existent. At this point I don’t even want it replaced — I don’t trust their technology. I just want my money refunded.

Died on first use
I chose this model because it fits in my small space (most models are too big) and because my previous Panasonic microwave lasted 30 years. When I set it up it seemed to be working (clock set, etc.), so I discarded the packaging (no room to keep it in a small apt.) Big mistake! The first time I tried to heat something, I programmed it for 1 minute. It turned on, operated for 1 second, and then completely died–light out, nothing would respond. Now I have to buy packaging and arrange for a UPS pickup (it weighs 30 pounds.) Very disappointed customer! What has happened to Panasonic’s famous quality?UPDATE: I returned the item that died on first use and Amazon sent a replacement of the same model. This one lasted not quite three months, and suddenly died in exactly the same way as the first one. Panasonic has no authorized service centers in my area, and requires that malfunctioning items be mailed to them. This microwave weighs 30 lbs. and there is no way I can even lift it, much less take it to the post office. I will never buy another Panasonic product ever again.

Not great, but okay.
I’ve had this a little over a year. It is sufficient. I have been very careful with it and still there are a couple of the touchscreen buttons on the panel that don’t work, anymore. It IS small and looks nice. Doesn’t heat too evenly and everything takes longer to cook than the directions suggest. Panasonic quality is certainly not what it use to be.

Read the footnotes in the Manual
After my 30 year old small 700 Amp Panasonic Microwave died, I bought this small countertop Panasonic Microwave. It fit on my countertop which was my main worry. It looks nice. However, when I tried to defrost one cup of frozen corn (weight 3.75 oz, or .2 lbs), nothing happened. There was no error code. The Manual has a conversion chart from ounces to pounds starting with 1 oz. HOWEVER, the defrost function does not work below .3 lbs or 5 oz.A bit frustrating…

Works fine, but….
This microwave fits nicely in the limited countertop space next to our cooktop. The unit is attractive and the stainless steel panel blends well with other appliances. The push-button door opener works easily (I prefer a handle and was concerned that the push-button might cause the unit to slide backward. However my concern was unfounded, as the weight of the unit keeps the microwave in place). Like some of the other reviewers, my criticisms involve design choices that were simply errors on the part of Panasonic. The first is the ultra bright clock display. Could it be seen from space? Possibly. Some of the lumens could have been used to light the control panel. If not practical, the letters and numbers on the control panel could have been a bright white. Finally, the interior of the unit should have been white rather than the dull gray, which will make cleaning difficult. These would be simple fixes by Panasonic. Time will tell if the unit lasts a long as my Haier (10 years). But for now, I am pleased with the performance.

Poor Interior Lighting
Microwave is compact and streamlined, though a little deeper than my old one. It also has 900 watts which is very good for an appliance of this size and price. (I don’t have to constantly adjust the cooking time to accommodate my previous 600 watts). However, the interior light is a joke. It’s situated at the front of the microwave with a bulb so dim that it barely lights up a quarter of the space. A huge design flaw. Thus the three star rating.

Keep the box! i purchased this item on may 7th 2020 and received it on may 13th 20. not thinking i set it up and put the packaging into the recycle bin, small apartment, no place for an extra box. it’s been used probably once a day since i set it up. about a week ago it stopped heating anything. my first thought was to return it but i no longer had the original packaging. i decided to try unplugging it then plugging it back in and to my surprise, it started working again. of course, that was short-lived and tonight i put my food in, turned it on, waited for the buzzer and got a plate of ice-cold food for my trouble. i tried the plug thing again, it took four attempts to get it to heat. that worked once and now the microwave is no longer functional. the light goes on, the food takes a ride but nothing gets heated. in short, the microwave is garbage, if you purchase it you will need to send it back in roughly a month or risk being out the money you spent along with what it will cost to replace it. if you’re smart you’ll just pass this microwave up all together it’s not worth the money or the aggravation.follow-up:lesson learned when looking at the reviews always start with the lowest first. those are the ones that tell you what it’s like to deal with all those involved when something goes wrong. it took an hour and 3 service reps, 2 just disappeared during the process, multiple attempts at securing a refund. first, they suggested have you tried plugging it in on another circuit. all my outlets in the kitchen are the same, which i explained. they have circuit breakers on the socket. well, the 1 and 2-star reviews mentioned they don’t work well when plugged into those. i don’t know which aggravated me more that they sell a product that won’t work on plugs routinely installed in kitchens for safety reasons or the thinly veiled implication that i should rearrange my kitchen to accommodate an overpriced poorly designed microwave. next came we’ll hand you over to Panasonic, well those 1 and 2-star reviews tell you how effective that is. yeah, i want to take however long to get a lemon fixed that will probably stop working just like it did before the repair. while I was writing my emphatic “no” reply serv. rep #1 took a permanent powder. Serv. Rep #2 came on after I signaled I was still there and proceeded to ask the questions I just answered because obviously he hadn’t read the conversation. i explained I wanted a refund and suggested he read the thread. he basically told me to hold on then disappeared just like serv. rep #1. enter serv. rep #3. yet again i state what i want and the reason i want it. he informed me that the 1-month return window had closed and i informed him i had the product just over a month, “READ THE THREAD!”, and it stopped working all after the window had closed. not that that really matters, you should get more than a month out of a microwave. after much discussion, the rep said it was resolved and i would get a refund. to make sure it wasn’t credit i said you do realize i will not be getting a replacement through amazon? he said that was fine then they told me they would send out a replacement that would take a week to arrive. hello! I’ve repeatedly asked for a refund, you said you were giving me a refund! why now would i agree to have a piece of crap replaced by another piece of crap? why after repeatedly telling you i needed to be able to get a microwave as soon as possible would they suggest that? why when you should be offering to overnight it are you showing me that you’re opting for the cheapest possible shipping method? Rep #3 told me to hold on. he finally got back to me, though, at this point, i was waiting for the entrance of rep #4. a one-time exception was being made and they were giving me a refund did i want it on an amazon card.?. you have to be kidding me! didn’t i just say i would not be purchasing a replacement on amazon? of course, i want it refunded to my original payment method! now to get my refund i have to find a box and packing material to mail back a piece of crap that belongs in the dump not refurbished for resale and labeled not in its original packaging. do i sound jaded?there really is only one way to handle a situation like this amazon llc. a refund with no further inconvenience to the customer. multi-billion dollar corporations can afford to eat the wholesale cost of faulty products that they shouldn’t be selling because well, they’re faulty. it shouldn’t take an hour, 3 reps, and multiple attempts on your part to mitigate potential losses, before the requested solution is finally agreed to, provided you are willing to be inconvenienced even further. all i can say is there’s only one thing here that sucks worse than that microwave and that’s how you chose to handle what should have been a simple refund.

Control panel unlit very hard to read
Seems to work well as microwave. Control panel is very hard to see, button background is black, numbers very fine white print. No one push buttons each button has to be pushed individually the push start which is annoying. Example for 2 minutes you need to push 2;0;0;start. interior is dark gray which does not show dirt.So work well as microwave but has inconvenient controls.
