all perfect – and then I pushed the PLAY button
External Blu ray Drive DVD/BD Player Read/Write Portable Blu-ray Drive USB 3.0 and Type-C: First the good. Great fit and finish. It’s substantial, not flimsy. Both connectors worked fine (YES separately). The drive was instantly recognized by my HP ENVY laptop – WIN 11. The recommended player software was downloaded & installed w/o issue. DVD inserted smoothly. Its title appeared in a message line in the player. I pushed the PLAY button and the disc started to spin. This was going to be a slam dunk purchase! Then…it just kept spinning…and spinning for several minutes. I stopped it and inserted another DVD, and another, all with the same result. I inserted a Blu Ray. It too was recognized. But when I hit PLAY a big pop-up indicated ‘missing Library files’ of some kind. Additional Blu Ray discs produced the same error. And 4k UHD? Those discs just spun around start-stop-start-stop with loud grinding noises. I wasn’t about to buy software that costs more than the drive itself, with no assurance that it’d be compatible. Instead of having TWO items to return, I sent the drive back.

It doesn’t play Blu-ray….
…. Unless you buy the PowerDVD22 software (but there’s a trial version available). Contrary to whatever else the descriptions say, this media player will NOT display Blu-ray unless, I assume, it’s with this very specific software. I downloaded 3 different kinds of Blu-ray players (spent an hour or so, until I got tired and bored, I mean I just wanted to watch a movie) and the answer was always the same: either it crashed the app or it said something about not being able to read the content. On the plus side, it does play DVD. But that’s not why I got it… So, honestly, right now, it seems like a waste of time and money. Definitely returning it and probably just going to Best Buy or something. What a waste. Don’t get it.

Doesn’t last long
4 months after purchase and the drive won’t stay connected long enough to be useful. Also, there is a loud buzzing sound and vibrates while spinning. No warranty! Save your money and buy something else!

4k
The claim that it recognizeses 4k discs is simply wrong. I have placed many 4k discs in, not a single one was recognized. it DOES NOT RECOGNIZE 4K discs, and they need to stop claiming it does. Otherwise, not a bad little drive.

Works very well.
This was purchased as an add on to a small i5 computer that does not have an optical disk drive. It worked immediately on connection through a USB port without having to load any special drivers or anything.

A Note of Caution:
Check the region!I bought this drive specifically because my new laptop did not have a built-in optical drive and I needed a disc drive to install older files. Since it was Blu-Ray I considered the bonus of being able to watch Blu-Ray movies on my laptop. The file installation worked fine, however, playing movies did not. The reason it did not play movies is the device is region-locked to region 2 and I’m in region 1 (US).I didn’t rate it lower on return it because it still has use for installing programs, however, I am very disappointed that I cannot get the ful use of this product because of the region lock.

Not good for Standard PC – update: Stopped reading DVD’s
This product was designed for laptops, exclusively. The product’s power cord is hardwired and is only around 12″ long. I originally was going to put this player on my desk and wire it to my PC, but cord is too short. Luckily my PC has USB ports on the top of the PC (where i ended up placing the blu-ray player) because this cord would not even reach the USB ports on the back of my PC even with it sitting on the top of the PC. Now I have to reach under my desk to install any DVD’s into player, not the most convenient situation. I thought this player would have a plug-able USB power cord so I could use one of my older cables. The product has worked fine the month I have had it.UPDATE (almost 1 month past amazon return window, less than 2 months since purchase):This drive no longer reads DVD’s, it reads Blu-Ray discs ok but not DVD’s

Works with MakeMKV
If you do not need to use it as a player, it works with MakeMKV for Blu-ray disks. I don’t think it works with 4K disks. I do not think that there is a firmware for this drive to make it work with the libre library. It is a bit slow, I have not been able to rip at 4x.I did not try to take it out of the enclosure, but it looks like this is not the slimmest internal, so keep that in mind if you are thinking of shucking it out of the enclosure.Non removable USB cord is a bummer. Mine works fine with just the USB-A , I have not tried the type C yet.

Better than advertised
I use this product on a MacBook M1 machine. It seems to support read speeds higher than advertised, with 16x apparently within its abilities. The drive was immediately recognized by the MacOS Ventura (13.x) and is compatible with Apple’s DVD Player software, HandBrake, and MakeMKV. This is one of those rare products that over-performs and under-prices alternatives. No idea how durable it will prove to be, but out of the box, a good performer. I just wish we made these here….

Mind Had the Wrong Region
First off, I should have know after opening the package and read the brief instructions that something was not right. Problem, this device did not provide the software to be able to work with a operating Windows 11 system. After trial and error, I discovered that I received a device that was not set the US region. I had read several of the reviews, however, ones that had the wrong region for the US were few in number, so I took a chance. I would not recommend this product especially if your running Windows 11.

Worked after a lot of work – sort of
Serviceable, budget model for my laptop. Way too cheap for the price point. Plays most discs without problem. Burning was very hit or miss, with a few discs ending up with read errors (and having to be tossed.) Speeds were SLOW, and wasn’t actually running USB 3.0 as advertised.I’d probably recommend paying more if you’re looking to burn.Did NOT work on my system with Windows 11! Not sure if that was due to some other issue I couldn’t figure out, but something to be aware of.Issues with the fact that this thing doesn’t come with its own software or drivers. The instructions were decipherable, if full of grammatical errors and missed words, but they direct you to download software from a suggested list of 3rd parties.I was not familiar with them, and spent some quality time trying to research if they were safe, quality programs. Finally installed one, and then… no instructions on how to get the drive actually installed.I’d originally bought this because my job, inexplicably, gave me files I needed to extract off a Blu Ray disc, as if it’s not uncommon for a laptop to not have a disc drive at all, let alone a Blu Ray, and I was really hoping I could just plug and play, pull the files and move on, but it took hours of fiddling with downloading and installing software to even get to the stage where my computer recognized the drive.I’ll be honest – I’m not terrible with computers, but I still couldn’t tell you how I eventually got this guy running.

Works well but cord could be longer.
External Blu ray Drive DVD/BD Player Read/Write Portable Blu-ray Drive USB 3.0Works as advertised – wish the USB cable was about 6 inches longer.Since it doesn’t ‘tuck into’ the case, they could have made it longer without any ill effects.

Blu ray/DVD player, writer
The media could not be loaded.
Not so easy to find right Blu ray player for laptop. Used and old Blu ray disc and features, trailers wanted Java which is no longer supported. Got DVD and that writer working with no problems. Love that I can take it with me and use any pc to play movie disc. System recognizes what is playing. Thumb drive should’ve had app on it. Some apps cost money, some have limited times you can view a disc.

Great Blu-Ray Player…with a catch.
First rule when taking this player out of the box: THROW AWAY THE “INSTRUCTION MANUAL”. It’s not quite plug-and-play, but almost as good. You’ll need to download a digital player driver such as CyberLink PowerDVD22 (Free). Second, insert a DVD (not a Blu-Ray), and change the region to USA. Once these three steps are complete, you can enjoy DVD and Blu-Ray playback! The reason I gave this a four star instead of five is because of the frustration I endured trying to set this up until I came upon a fellow user’s installation directions.

Nice Paperweight!
Ordered to play 4k discs on my PC, as my current externals (I have multiple) are all DVD and blu ray. I should have known better than to buy no name shovel-ware from china but rolled the dice… It started off promising as my PC recognized the drive, but thats the end of the good news! Using brand new out of the package 4K discs, Blu Ray discs, and even a regular DVD disc for good measure I could not get a single one to read between 3 different pieces of software (VLC, Leawo, and Kodi; that work with ease with my other optical drives). This drive simply could not recognize any pristine conditioned discs of any format. The discs would spin for roughly 20 seconds after you close the drive, the lights would blink as if its “loading” and then it would just shut off. The 20$ basic dvd external drives I have provide more functionality than this useless drive. They are packaged in Blank white boxes with no brand name that simply says “Slim Blu Ray Drive” on one side, and made in china on the other. They dont even have the confidence to put their generic name on the packaging.Returned immediately.

It’s highly descriminatory
I bought this on February 28, 2022. It is February 2, 2023. When I got it, it played DVD and BluRay just fine. For a week. Then BluRay discs were no longer recognized. For another 2 weeks, it played DVDs only. Meaning all this time it did movies but not CDs. I use Cyberlink Power DVD as my player. When it stopped recognizing movies, it started recognizing CDs so I have been using this drive to listen to music as it is all that’s working. I have a PC now and tried it there and I had the same issue. I am now trying to find a drive that will allow me to watch movies. Suggestions would be great!

Well i was excited as i really wanted to start watching movies on my laptop. As I opened my box it came loose so im guessing this was a sent back from a previous purchase so DO NOT expect anything new coming in. I plugged it in downloaded what i needed to and it won’t read my blu-rays nor DVD as i look inside the tray on the reader i found a loose screw stuck in the reader and I have no idea what it belongs too. Overall this just wasn’t a good purchase as i just felt they sent me something that had already been returned to them.

So far so good
This is a good little Blu Ray drive. The only issue I’ve had so far is I have had to plug it into an externally USB 3.0 port extender to give it enough power to run. I think this is more of a problem with the USB 3.0 ports on my PC than the the drive.

DIY saves $20
Bottom line up front– if you’re not comfortable with tech, spend the extra 20 or so dollars on a drive that’s NOT Matishita or Panasonic. If you are comfy with tech (or you’ve already bought the damn thing and want to make it work), read the tutorial below.Issue: Player will not read commercial DVDs.Reason: The player is set to Region 2 (Europe, Middle East, Japan) by default. If you’re in the US, you need Region 1.Solution: Normally we can change the region in hardware properties, but Matishita drives are infamously resistant to that change. We can force it to update to the correct region by downloading a software:1. Download the most up to date version of CyberLink PowerDVD and launch it.2. Insert a Region 1 DVD (if you bought it in the US, it’s Region 1) into the Matishita drive.3. Select the Movie tab and then the Disc option (it’s set to Library by default).4. PowerDVD will prompt you to change the Region. Select Region 1 and hit OK.5. Close PowerDVD. (I recommend uninstalling it as well)6. You can now play your DVD in your preferred media player! …Oh you don’t have one? Okay step 2.Issue: My Region is correct and I still can’t play commercial DVDs.Reason: Windows computers don’t have DVD decoders pre-installed.Solution: Install a DVD decoder. CyberLink PowerDVD that we used above is a decoder that can play DVDs fine, but I find their money-grabbing model annoying. VLC Media Player is a free, open-source player that can play your DVDs. The playback quality is just as good as any paid service, but I will warn you that its interface is ugly. That’s it! Depending on your internet speed, you should be able to do all this in less than 30 minutes. Heads up since I know someone out there is thinking about being clever– you can only change this drive’s Region four (4) times, so you can’t keep switching it to play DVDs from different regions.Outside of the initial setup, the drive’s been good. Plays CDs and DVDs reliably and rips them fine too. Haven’t tested Blu-Ray cause I don’t have any on hand, but I’ll check some out from my local library and update later this week.

Need Software to Decode Still
I bought this little device because until recently my PC hadn’t needed an optical drive at all. Six years later now and I have no other way to play DVD’s or Blue-Ray, and at around $60 this was a good price I felt like.Like others I DID have an issue where it’s set to Region 2 by default, but that’s a simple fix someone else here has outlined, so I won’t go into detail on how to do it, google should even be able to assist if necessary, as I did it in the PC settings for the drive itself.Aside from the fact you have to install another application to be able to read any disc you put into this drive, and most want $60/yr it seems, this is at least a viable and cheap option for what I need it for. I’ll update if any problems or complications occur, the only deduction was due to them not including even free software with it to allow you to play a DVD right out of the box, but since there’s so many cheap or free ones, it wasn’t worth knocking off more than that for the minor issues I feel.Update 3/3/2023: I ended up purchasing a second unit to keep it at region 2/b, however only DVD’s seem to work in it, I have tried several BluRays so far that I KNOW are region B and they will NOT work. Perhaps it’s an issue on my end, and I’ll keep trying to figure it out and re-update this if anything works, but as of right now the player won’t even recognize a disc is inserted if it’s region b, and I know it’s not the discs since I have a Sony 4k player that’s region free, and it reads all my discs just fine, so the issue is either the player, or the settings on the PC somehow causing issue where it won’t read the discs.

Stupid thing came configured for region 2.
Why was a minor detail the headline? It’s a bog-standard player-writer, so any other headline would be nothing but noise. Why was the region an issue? Because I was using it to rip DVDs and BluRays using ripping software, and I had to stop and go find DVD player software just to reprogram the stupid thing for region 1.It works. No better or worse probably than any other Chinese P.O.C. player-writer.

Very Good for Blu-Ray
Did not have success with regular DVDs, but reads the Blu-Ray just fine. Like the compatibility with USB 3 drives. Easy to connect, disconnect. No other power source needed if the USB port can handle charging up to 2 watts. A little large and a bit heavy for carrying with laptop, but that is not a problem. Have not used extensively yet, but no issues requiring maintenance. Mounts on desktop fine.

This drive is NOT USB 3.0, CANNOT write Blue-Ray Discs, and more!
This product is only USB 2.0 capable making it very slow. It also draws currents on initial read that exceed the 900mA limit for USB 3.0 ports and when I tried to plug it in to a 2.0 (500mA) port it would not boot. After disassembling the unit I noticed that the actually drive unit says that it is a DVD/CD rewritable drive giving me the impression that it cannot write blue-rays. It has only a Blue-ray disc logo, nothing about Ultra HD giving me the impression that it does not support Ultra HD although I don’t have a disc to test this. Lastly the chord is way too short. Other than that it can still do enough for me at the lowest price I could find. I recommend plugging this into a self powered USB 3.0 Hub for the power issues even though the 4 wire chord proves that it is only USB 2.0.

Works great
I had an initial review where I rated this item lower because the first one I received had a defective tray that would not close therefore I had to send it back. I decided to take a risk and asked for a replacement unit. I’m sure happy I did as the replacement works perfectly. Shipping was super fast I got the replacement the next day. I am only using this unit to playback DVD and Bluray factory non-burned discs. I don’t plan to burn or record. As far as reports from others of it not working or having a region issue I did not have a problem at all. I live in the US and have region 1 discs. I did however first install Power DVD 22 Ultra software (not included) which is basically a requirement so maybe that is why it worked so well. Of course, you can cheap out and get some freeware but I wouldn’t do it in this case. I actually, was able to plug the player into my laptop USB port and used it to install the Power DVD software and everything worked perfectly. The drive is relatively quiet and I was able to play both standard DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. The only flaw is cord is short but that wasn’t a big deal. I do have a Windows 10 OS so I can’t say anything as to if this works with Windows 11. Other information: I believe the software is only good for one computer in other words you can’t use it on two machines as far as I can tell. It would have been nice if I could install it on my desktop I would never actually use both instances at the same time just the laptop when I’m traveling and the desktop at home. If I’m wrong about this please correct me.

If you want to Rip Your BLU-Rays and DVDs it’s Pretty Slow
If you want to Rip Your BLU-Rays and DVDs it’s Pretty Slow but it plays disc just fine. I have an old external DVD drive that have used for the past 13 years for ripping DVDs and it blows this thing out of the water . I pick this puppy up because it inexpensive and I want to Rip 2 BlU-Rays and 2 DVD’s at the same time . With current setup I was limited to 1 BLU and 2 DVD’s .This takes about 35-40 minutes to rip BLU-Ray and 15-20 of a DVD TV Show Series Disc. I haven’t tried a DVD Movie yet. I need to own a physical copy of everything but I love the convenience of Digitally accessing it . Jellyfish is the software I use to watch it and MakeMKV is the software I use for ripping if anyone is wondering .Also they are both free open source and amazing.

Good basic BD player
Thin, but cable is a bit on the short side (USB) to my desktop. Instructions are poor, but I figured it out. BUT it says something about “don’t lift or angle while a disk is playing” and that is a major caution. However, it is currently playing my BDs well, so I kept it on a stable platform (top of a new computer) that only had CD/DVD player. Decent price.

Not the first customer with the disc drawer not to latch shut, but replacement worked as advertised.
Could be an issue with the drawer latch design. I noticed at least one other customer experienced the same issue of the disc drawer not latching (would not stay closed). The exchange process would take close to a month to receive a replacement. So I returned the drive instead, and then reordered a second unit which works as advertised. A pain if you need a working drive ASAP….otherwise no complaints.

Save your money
I’m sending this back asap. I got this because my current PC has no cd/dvd rom and I wanted to load up some old games I had bought years ago.I was excited when it arrived, i immediately hooked it up and had a minor headache getting it set up with my system, but working with PCs I sort of expected this and don’t hold this against the manufacturer. I’m the one that upgraded to Windows 11 and that’s not their fault. After getting the whole thing set up my excitement returned. To test it out on my system I decided to load up a blu-ray and watch a movie. I pressed the button and the tray popped out… the open button felt cheap like it would break after a few presses but that wouldn’t be my problem. I loaded my disc and attempted to close the tray… it was stuck. I investigated why and noticed that the metal sliding track was slightly ill fitted… I gently held pressure and pushed… it still wouldn’t go… I tried with a little more pressure and I heard some things fall on the ground… they were screws. When I finally got the tray in place I also noticed some small plastic bits on the ground. This item is built cheaply, and breaks easily. I’m even convinced that it possibly came to me already broken.. I’m done with this brand. If I could I’d give it 0 stars.I hope anyone that goes with this product doesn’t share my experience. Maybe I just got a dud

Player does not support 4K or BD-XL
This player will not work with any lead except for the one provided, which is extremely short. Any other attempt will cause the player to malfunction.I currently have a player called Leawo on my computer to play 4K discs with. I also have a different portable player that supports 4K playback and BD-XL.DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE FALSE ADVERTISING OF THIS PRODUCT. IT DOES NOT SUPPORT 4K PLAYBACK. IT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE BD-XL DISKS.Otherwise, it works. And I’ll leave it at that (very disappointed).

Stay away! Terrible product
The external Blu-ray drive turned on one time after trying on multiple different computers. It didn’t work on any of the three MacBooks I tried and eventually turned on when it was attached to a windows 10 desktop.I placed a drm free Blu-ray into the device and it looked like it started to load and then the device shut off. I spent two hours trying to find a pin or needle that was small enough to push the pinhole eject button but couldn’t find anything small enough that fit. Eventually I found out that if you press hard enough in the back where the power cable is connected then it briefly powers on. So I kept trying to power it on and off while repeatedly pressing the eject button. After about 30 tries it finally spit my disc back out.Don’t use this as there is no quality control. The DVD region is set to region 2 out of the box so if you are in the US you will need to first change it to region 1. They really should have included an option to plug it in directly to an outlet as well but you get what you pay for.Avoid!

This Product Exceeded My Expectations!
The media could not be loaded.
I’ve had absolutely no issues with this drive, I purchased it for the sole purpose of ripping my physical media to my Plex Media Server and it worked perfectly every time. Read speeds are a little on the slower side, but that’s ok, if you can see in the video I posted, I got a max read speed of 5.2mbps which is pretty slow considering the Step Brothers movie was just a DVD, so it may have been 720p. I haven’t ripped a blue ray movie in a while, but ill update this with the max read speeds I get when ripping the movie Logan on blu ray in 4k.

Works great but minor issue
I have nothing negative to say about the drive other than for some reason the one I got was set to region 2 for DVDs and I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working. I was able to change it and now it works perfectly but not everyone is going to know about it or how to change it.

Faulty
It’s possible that I just got a dud model, but I had nothing but problems with this Blu-ray drive. Another reviewer said that his drive worked great with MakeMKV on Linux, but I had no such luck. Several discs that worked fine in other Blu-ray drives could not be read at all in this one. And when it did work, it was slow.

Good blu ray player/burner.
It is a good blu ray burner/player. Easy to recognize by almost all computers and laptops. Easy-to-use and compatible with most blu ray player programs.

Must unplug to operate
It plays fine. But in order to play a movie, you have to unplug the connection, then replug it for the green light to come on. Only then will it operate

Good for a small space and works well.
I like this a lot so far. Have not had long enough to speak to longevity but works well.

Didn’t work at first but,…
I found out I’d have to run Cybrerlink PowerDVD before pluging it in, or it wouldn;t find it.

So so
Negatives:- Region is not set to USA. Have to change it in Windows Device manager, which eats into the number of times the region can be set. Being that this is sold for the USA, it should come with USA region preset.- Fails to burn DVDs.Positives:- No issues with reading, so far.- Installed Windows 10 Pro onto a laptop using this drive as a boot option.- Easy to carry in the laptop bag.
