Works great but many steps to do so

The PDF and jpeg both turn out great duplicates. The hardware works great!!! The software gave me some problem getting it to download and installed but after a lot of time got it.If you want to scan a few pics or a few pages it works I’m into scanning family tree records and pics which sometime can be a large amount of pages, and when it come to going through several step to get it becomes very time consuming. For that reason only did I return and go to a more professional machine. For small amounts of scans there isn’t much better for the pixel and duplication. And it doesn’t take up a lot of room a plus in any situation. Yes recommend this scanner for small jobs. Be prepared to click several times to get it done.

About the same scan quality as an a Workforce All In One

I was “assuming” that a dedicated scanner would have some nice photo specific features. I was disappointed that this uses the same software that operates my Workforce All-in-One Unit. Not a bad unit just not an upgrade from the one I already own. (FYI I started scanning family photos back in the 1990s I have used HP, Epson and Canon. They are all good units but you get what you pay for. The low end units are fine for occasional use but the ones in the $300-$500 price range are worth the money if you have a lot of scanning to do.

Well, it does work with mac … eventually.

After reporting yesterday that this scanner didn’t work with Mac … I bought it in January and hadn’t gotten it to work since (it’s now June) … I tried one last time, and well, it did work.Getting it to work required:1. Attaching it to my desktop (with a cable I borrowed from my electric piano charger).2. TOTALLY ignoring the Mac printer/scanner interface that has worked with every other printer or scanner I’ve owned in the past 30 years.3. Downloading and installing the Epson software for Mac from their download site.4. Going to the “Application” file in the mac “Finder” menu, opening the Epson Software folder and double-clicking the Scan2 file.Much to my surprise, the scanner turned on and an operating window (similar to the one in the Mac interface) popped up and my scanning backlog–mostly draft documents that I save because they show my hand-written notes on original songs–was cleared at last. When I quit the application and put my computer to sleep the scanner turned off.So … at least it works. I do love how tiny it is and how easy to store, so I’m now reasonably pleased and no longer looking to replace it.

    How to do glossy pictures!

I have ancestral photos that were apparently ‘copied’ by taking photos of earlier photos. They then printed them out using a glossy finish. I was panicked when the first glossy photo – an several subsequent ones- came out as black globs! After some research, I grabbed a sheet of dark purple card stock and placed it over the photo! Voilà! Problem solved. It came out beautifully!

Better than I thought once used

the hinges are cheap and off balance, the inside of cover is so cheap I thought it was packing material….but the scan quality is very good, the cord didn’t work so I am using one from another device. Oveall-you get what you pay for. If you plan to use everyday for work, you may want to move up in price, I wanted to scan photo albums and works great for that.

Goes Toes Up After A Few Scans

I bought this scanner to scan old family photos. When it works it is good. But I’ve had to restart my computer(s) countless times when, after a handful of scans, a window will inevitably pop up and say “Scanner not connected to computer”. I called tech support at Epson (more on them later) and they eventually sent me a second scanner, same make and model, to make sure there wasn’t a defect with the one I ordered here on Amazon. SAME ISSUES and I’ve tried them both on very good Windows 7 and Windows 10 computers. Scan Scan Scan and then, PLOP! Error message that it is not connected. In the beginning I did call Epson tech support and was re-routed to the Philippines. That’s all good an fine and they were able to run through hours (yes hours) of trouble shooting with me to make sure I was using the correct drivers and downloads, etc. I had been already. Then they wanted to go in and make some adjustments to my system administrator and I let them. Didn’t help. Plugged them both into several different USB ports on both computers. Scan Scan Scan, PLOP! Error message scanner is not connected. So I asked for a different model as the replacement. No can do as they told me the warranty only covers this particular model. I asked to talk to someone above their basic support and it took a lot of convincing to do it. I spent about 8 hours trying to trouble shoot with them before this point while being on hold and talking to a variety of levels of support. Eventually, and I do mean eventually, I was connected to someone in their corporate office (seemed to good to be true) and after telling them my story for another twenty minutes I was again told that they were sorry and the warranty covered only the replacement of this specific model. I offered to pay the difference on a more expensive model. I offered to not get a refund on a less expensive model. They would have none of it and kept shoving their warranty policy in my face. I’ve been using Epson products for twenty years. I asked them why their product had so fully integrated itself into my operating system and wasn’t a simple plug and play device. No answer. If you decide to get this thing, I can only assume that you will need to do what I have done and turn off your computer several times during a medium to large scanning project in order for the scanner to reboot and start working again. In the past month of scanning I’ve had to restart my computers NO LESS THAN several dozen times. I’m in a crunch to get things scanned before Christmas so I don’t have time to send these things back and try things out with HP or I would. AVOID THIS GLITCHED PIECE OF JUNK! I told Epson I was going to write this if they didn’t help me and they seemed none to concerned. At any rate, here it is.

Hardware good, Software has to be replaced

Just started using this scanner today. Initial impression is that the hardware (scanner) is a good unit. The included software is horrible. The auto-crop feature cuts too much off scanned images. After working for several hours, I cannot find a way to turn off auto-crop and specify a high DPI at the same time. So, useless for high-quality scans.Just paid $50 for VueScan third-party software to control this scanner, had good scans in five minutes.

    Great Scanner, but short cord….

Needed a basic scanner for one of the office work stations, mostly for scanning the occasional document for emailing.Super easy set up, came with a CD to load up the software. Can operate it from the scanner itself with the push of a button, or pull up the ESPON Scan program and launch from there. Scans to PDF, scans into a basic editing program for photos and has both auto and manual functions. We didn’t need to mess around with any of that, and were glad for the simplicity of plug and play — loaded the software, connected the scanner, and were instantly able to scan documents as needed. As others mentioned, very lightweight, if one needed it to be portable for some reason, plus is USB powered, which is handy.Only problem we had is that the cord it comes with (USB to Micro USB port on the scanner itself) was only 5 feet long, and that didn’t work for the particular work station area, where the PC tower was located under the desk, and the best place available for the scanner, on the desk top, put it more than 5 feet away. EPSON was pretty useless at recommending anything longer, and we learned the hard way that not just any USB to Micro USB cord would do the job.A bit of trial and error on ordering a longer, replacement cord, finally yielded this product:Mediabridge USB 2.0 – Micro-USB to USB Cable (10 Feet) – High-Speed A Male to Micro B – (Part# 30-004-10A )This ten foot replacement cord worked perfectly. Other cords would only power the unit, but would not transmit data, but this cord, as a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 cord, capable of data sync at 480 Mbps, is what we needed. And, for about six dollars, it was a super affordable fix for the short cord problem we had.Terrific scanner, does exactly what we needed it to, very happy!UPDATE: Mediabridge cord quit working with the scanner. Not the fault of the cord itself, just this scanner doesn’t seem to like any other cord other than what Epson sent with it, so there must be some proprietary element to the cord itself, I don’t know. Anyway, switched back to the Epson cord, and have to keep the scanner on top of the PC tower, since the Espon cord is too short to have the scanner on the desk top (PC tower is under the desk) but scanner still works great. Just wish it came with a longer cord, or wish Epson was any help at sourcing a longer cord that would work.Knocked off one star (from five down to four) because Epson customer service was useless at trying to solve the short cord issue and their recommendation of any Hi Speed cable clearly is not accurate, since the Hi Speed one we bought is now not liked by the scanner, after only a day of use. Cord itself tests fine, so it’s something with the scanner, on what cord will work with it. So, be advised it only has a 5 foot cord, and finding a longer one seems a fruitless effort.

Super Loud and slower than expected

Its really loud, like grinding gears annoying loudI have a lot of old family photos to scan inI don’t understand half the reviews on here. The biggest review by “wise shopper” said it’d take 20-30 seconds per picture on a 2400 DPI setting, but here’s the catchThat’s not a standard default settingThere’s 4 settings:- Automatic (DEFAULT)- Home- Office- ProfessionalAutomatic has a limit of only 1200 DPI (default is 300 DPI) and is the fastest, but is still slow in my opinion. On a 1200 DPI setting with a quantity of 4 , 3″ x 5″ photograph, it took, approximately 50 seconds per photo to scan in (I counted the number of times I could say mississippi at a reasonable rate). Thats a grand total of about 3.5 minutes for just 4 PHOTOS at 1200 DPI in one load setting. That’s pretty slow. I have a 1000 + images.I don’t understand these reviews here claiming 1200 DPI takes only 5-15 seconds. DO people know how to properly count a start and finish time? Its not the moment the scan runs through, its the moment you press the scan button until the moment the previewed files are shown on your PCNot only that, if you load 4 photos in here at 3″x5″ per photo size, it needs to do 4 individual scans, not one full scan. Meaning you hear super loud grinding gears on 4 iterations as the sensor moves back and forward between scansIf you go to 2400 DPI, it took, approximately 2 minutes per 3″ x 5″ photo. At 4800 DPI I don’t even want to bother. Seriously, I don’t know if my unit is defective, but all these times on these reviews are about 1/2 to 1/3rd of my scan timesIt scans fine, is super loud, but is SUPER slow too. It is lightweight and portable thoughAlso, the scans are not perfect as someone else mentioned in these reviews. It has a small cutoff when you align the images into the scanner. I would say, approximately 1/8th inch at the edges are cutoff. Its not a big deal though for meOverall I don’t really like this machine that much, its slower and louder than expected. I am not sure if I want to buy a more expensive unit, because I only need this machine for a one time use of scanning 1000+ old family photos

Poor software, slow speed, and limitations mar this otherwise excellent scanner

This is a good scanner, however the software isn’t great. For the most part you can just plug and play. However, the software has a lot of “smart” features that get in your way. By default it will try to automatically crop, rotate, and orient images and it doesn’t always do a good job of it. Furthermore, images are always recorded as 8-bit and there’s no way to change the sensitivity or exposure of the scan. If you are scanning documents and casually scanning photos to send to grandma, then this printer is more than suitable for those purposes.

Software from the 90s. Glitchy and interferes with laptop display settings for no obvious reason.

So after deciding I would sit on the sofa and slowly scan photos whilst watching TV, I turned the scanner off, un-docked the laptop, restarted the laptop and plugged the scanner in directly. I then spent an hour uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and software. The “app” (more like a 1990s computer program) decided that it would only launch when I had multiple screens connected, this includes, and remains still unsolved, the configuration menu that opens as a separate window (somewhere unknown). Topped off by the fact that the reinstall then decided to assume “disconnect from all monitors” so when I did dock my laptop again I was unable to use the screens that the pop-ups where on.I followed the install instructions diligently and have 8 or so Epson programs installed now, most of which say they can’t open for unknown reasons. As far as scanning – I don’t get it… I want to scan at 4800dpi, which the scanner claims to be capable of doing, but when selected I am met with “this is too big” so I can’t actually scan at that depth. No information about how I might actually use the scanners capabilities. Seems like a bullshit sales tactic from Epson there really.Haven’t managed to find how to auto-crop photos either – it appears that may ONLY be in cloud based scanning? Who knows, there’s really very little assistance in any capacity as far as manuals and clear instructions. I guess I’ll just keep going with scanning only when I am sitting at my desk and when the moon is in the 3 trimester of the rings of Saturn… This is a 3-star experience.

    It works.

This scanner has so many bad reviews that are referencing forward issues. And my first try to get it going I was using a chrome book which didn’t work because this scanner only works with very specific operating systems and one of them them is not a chrome book. But after we downloaded the driver onto the compatible laptop it connected immediately and has been working fine to scan some photo albums for my family. I will say that after scanning approximately 15 individual scans in three days opening and closing the lid hinges have started to come loose. It also takes about a minute per scan and it’s rather loud. I’m not sure how long this thing is going to hold on for but so far it’s pretty alright.

    Does its job

So, I bought this several months ago and never even opened the box Amazon shipped it in.I bought this scanner because my father has hundreds of photos he took from when my older brother was born until around 15 years ago (so around 20 years of photos). He had many of them in a giant ziplock bag. When I was visiting recently I stole the bag and bought this scanner, with the intent of digitizing everything and surprising him. I just set it up a few hours ago. You need to use the provided cd for the drivers. You can ignore all of their install garbage, go to device manager, and install the drivers, then use the default windows scanner software (if you’re basic like me).I’ve been scanning for the last few hours and it takes around 4 minutes to scan a 3 1/2in x 4 3/8in at 900dpi. From what I’ve seen (while I was picking the settings I wanted), dpi, doesn’t matter. It will take around the same amount of time no matter what settings are chosen. As far as the scans go: it seems like it does exactly what I wanted. The scans look exactly like the photo, contrast, colors, etc. I couldn’t ask for anything better (I’m sure there are crazy scanners out there that duplicate the colors to within .0001% of the original value vs this where it’s .01% (made up numbers). This thing is going to go through a marathon, as I said earlier I have hundreds of photos. I’ve gone through around 30 so far and it’s holding up like a champ. We’ll see if it’s good after another 20 hours of scanning in a few days.

Like scanner but recently had some issues with it turning on

Overall, I like this scanner, especially the stitching software that I used when scanning in my watercolor paintings. There’s a little bit of a learning curve with the stitching software, especially figuring out what settings to use and where the files get saved. You can select where the files get saved after finishing the stitching, still haven’t discovered where to set the default file directory to save files. Also, make sure that you have enough overlap on the scans to help the software do it’s stitching thing. For quarter sheet of 190 lb arches watercolor paper (approx 14×16), I do 3 scans. I also put a couple of art books on the closed lid when scanning to make sure the paper is in contact with the glass. For watercolor paper, it’s a bit tricky to get the balance of showing the paper texture without effecting the color on the rest of the scan. I’m choosing not to show the paper texture.ISSUE: After not using my scanner for a couple of months, this morning I had a similar issue with the scanner not turning on and after reading reviews, noticed that several people had a similar problem. Here’s my work around:1. I updated my Epson V39 and scanning software because I figured one of the windows updates confused things. The scanner still didn’t turn on.2. I restarted my computer with the scanner connected. The scanner still didn’t turn on until 5 minutes later. Have patience, you won’t be able to rush this no matter how many times you press the on/off button. :)3. Next, the ARC stitching software didn’t see the scanner even though it was turned on. So I closed the ARC software and restarted my computer again with the scanner plugged in. The scanner only took 2 minutes to turn on this time. Everything worked normally for me at that point.CAUTION: If I unplug the scanner cord or interrupt a scan (with the ARC scan/stitch software), everything gets confused and I have to restart my computer to get it to work again. It’s a pain, but at least it does work and I like the scanner and software enough that it’s worth the extra time.

DOES NOT SCAN TO GOOGLE DRIVE

Bought this because it was able to scan to google drive directly. However I keep getting error messages that Epson has not updated their security so google will not let them upload to the drive. Now working on another avenue.. The scanner constantly shuts down. I scanned two full albums of ~30 images only for it to shut down and not save the photos scanned. Now I work in sets fo 4 so that when it inevitably stops working I only lose 4 pics at a time.. THIS TAKES FORVER. I would have returned but I had already been using it for a day or so… wish I didn’t. Scan quality is fine but I think others probably do the same. I am not sure this is worth the price for photo scanning.

    OK printer, Terrible user interface

I was looking for a inexpensive scanner to scan some old photos. The scanner works fine, but the software is abysmal. A scanner that I had 20 years ago had a better user interface than this one. Not only does the user interface look old, but it behaves like old software. For example, if you choose the default for scanning a photo you will get a tiny image that is less than 1024×640. When you try to save it the options are .jpeg, tiff and something else. If you search around you will be able to same it as .png and you can certainly scan it with a more reasonable resolution but when I chose the highest resolution it told me that it would take 17 minutes to scan. It give you an choice if you want a image to print or to put on the web. If you choose print, you can print it, but it is unclear as to how to save the image.

    Quick scan with good quality

Scans and saves only one page at a time. Had to install software from Epson website. After every scan completed, the software icon closes and you have to click to open to go to the next scan. Takes about less than one minute to complete scan because it does a preview scan first and then the actual scan in 2 passes total. First day of usage so I probably will try more scans and decide if I want to keep it.

the front utility buttons on my unit don’t work but it’s not a problem

if you can click a mouse button, the software is actually very simple.I could have returned it for a replacement, but for whatever reason, I didn’t, now that’s a first. If you’re just scanning documents or other printed material, the scan quality is very good, especially for the price. It’s an excellent value. This isn’t intended for super high-quality scans like art prints.

This is not a true 48-bit color scanner.

I just wanted to let everyone know that this is not a true 48-bit color scanner. All of the websites I went to to read the reviews about this scanner claimed it was a 48-bit scanner (16 bits per color). Unfortunately, after I purchased it, the Epson team confirmed that this scanner can’t generate 48-bit color image files, it can only create 24-bit color (maximum) image files. The technical specifications for this scanner states that it’s “48-bit color internal, 24-bit color external”. I gave this scanner 3 stars because I found that specification from Epson deceptive. Why even mention that it’s 48-bit color internal if it can’t create 48-bit color images?A true 48-bit color scanner can create 48-bit color TIFF images (24-bit color is the maximum for JPEGs). Most people don’t need 48-bit color images since today’s monitors can’t even display 48-bit colors. But if you’re scanning family photos for archival purposes, you might want to future-proof them by scanning them to 48-bit color TIFF images. And if that’s what you will be doing, then this is not the scanner for you.

    Horrible in every way

After about 2 or 3 scans it quits working. I reboot. Sometimes that helps. After 2 or 3 more scans then it needs rebooting again. Sometimes that no longer works. Then I uninstall & reinstall the software. Then it works for about 2 or 3 more scans & the same thing happens all over again. I’m using a Mac computer but it claims to be compatible. I don’t think it is. I had an Epson that I used with a Windows computer. It worked great. It is obsolete for my Mac so I had to buy a new scanner. Since I was happy with my old scanner, I went with another Epson. I’ve only had it a week, but I’ve reloaded the software about a dozen times & rebooted more times than that. I’ve talked to people at Epson at least 3 times & had communication problems each time. If it is working when I get off the phone with them, they think it is fixed. It lasts about 2 or 3 scans & then it all starts over again. Since I’m still in the return window, I’m about ready to send it back. Some of the scans are great, some are washed out. You never know how the color is going to be either. It won’t let you scan directly into Photos. The go into Pictures. Then you have to transfer them to Photos & delete them from Pictures. Lots of extra steps that seem unnecessary. This has been beyond frustrating!!!

    Works great with MAC OS10.12.6

I wanted to leave a review for people looking for an easy affordable solution for Mac scanning. I’m still using High Sierra OS, and haven’t upgrade yet to Catalina, so take that into account. So, I was up and scanning 5 minutes and the first scan was awesome. All I had to do was unpack, plug in the USB cable, download and install the V39 driver software from the Epson site (the site does not specify that the driver works with Mac but apparently it works fine). I then placed the object to be scanned on the platen, opened Mac’s Preview application, went to Preview’s File menu and selected “Import from Epson Perfection V39. After the scanning window opened up, I selected “Detect Enclosing Box” from the drop down menu on the bottom left (this automatically sense the edges of your object and sizes the scan accordingly), I hit the scan button.I’ve uploaded the first scan here- looks great huh? Every detail is sharp,, the colors are accurateThat was my first scan… On the next object I scanned, the auto detection feature trimmed about a half inch from one edge. I tried it again, and got the same result. So I switched to the A4 paper size option in the drop down menu and tried again. This scanned the entire image, but there was plenty of unwanted white around the object. No problem, I used the Preview’s selection tool to drag a box selection around the object, selected Copy form the edit menu, then selected New From Clipboard from the top of the File menu. Presto, another excellent scan. Also, using the Preview app allows you to save as either JPEG, PNG, PDF or TIF. Very nice.So a little buggy, but for only around $70, I’m very happy. The scanner is about as big as a large laptop, and very light, so it will be easy to move out of the way, like drop it into a drawer, when not in use. It’s also pretty quiet and the scans take about 15 seconds. There’s apparently more features available (there’s four buttons on the front of the unit that I haven’t explored yet).

Reasonable priced, nice quality scanner that GREATLY simplifies the job of digitizing those family photos

I got the job of scanning four big family photo albums into digital form, maybe a bit over a thousand photos. Almost all of them were 3×5 or 4×6, but when I used my multifunction printer as a scanner, it required two separate scans, with an intermediate dragging of a border to define the final scan. It was multiple minutes (or so it seemed) for each photo, and I knew that I’d never finish without a high degree of annoyance, something not really appropriate to a family memory preservation duty.I shopped around for a photo-specific scanner, hopefully one with an auto-feeder, looking to automate as much as I could, but basically struck out. A bit of reading and a few reviews suggested that though it was minus the auto-feed, this printer could be what I was looking for. It was reasonably priced and I took a chance and ordered it.I’ve now got several hours of use scanning pictures of my kids and family, and am pretty happy with the unit. The big surprise was that the quality of the scan, even at the same DPI was noticeably better than the multifunction printer. Truth is, the majority of the work in this task is removing the photos from the waxy album sheets and their clear plastic covers. The scanner just keeps on cranking, and it takes about 1 minute for me to load a picture, scan it, put it on the ‘done’ pile, and then begin the next.Would it be faster overall with an autofeeder? Maybe a bit, but most of the time in the sequence above is for the scanner to determine the size of each photo placed on the glass, and then doing whatever it must to scan only the image. It takes two passes, just like the multifunction unit, but the the passes are automated and require no intervention beyond removing the photo when the process is complete. Photos are saved in JPG format, and the filename with its 3 digit number is auto-incremented with each new scan. I use Windows 7, and the included Epson software puts the completed scans in the ‘Pictures’ section of the Library. I’m almost done with the first album, so it seems likely that I’ll finish in an acceptable amount of time.

Decent with some features that may not be for everyone

I have yet to use this on a long term basis. So far it is OK. Not bad. However it should cost no more than about $45. Some other reviews say it makes a lot of noise. I did not experience that with this item. It is very quiet. PROs: It is compact and light. It does basically good scans. It can be easily stored in the closet or even anywhere you can store a laptop of the same size. It does not need a lot of wires or connections. You just attach it to your laptop or computer using a USB-micro USB cable that comes with the scanner. It also comes with a CD to install drivers on the computer.CONs: It is definitely not if you need to do many many scans at once. (You would need a big professional scanner that can feed document after document and do at least a dozen papers at once and tolerate the work load). The Epson V39 is a bit slow. You have to set it right or it will take about 3 to 5 minutes to scan. If you have the right setting it takes somewhere under a minute or so. It has features that I have not yet learned to use or may never use. It has a feature that will separate the page image because it detects as two different photos or images. If you have a page that has two paragraphs spaced apart by some spaces the scanner may make a scan of each paragraph separately. I heard this is so that you can scan two photos at once and the scanner will automatically make two different scans of them. This is a feature that I am not sure how to de-activate yet. A person who is not very computer savvy may have particular problems with this item. I may or may not keep this scanner . I may send it back and try another one. However, once you set it up right, it is good to have around if you need to quickly scan a document without a lot of fuss. It is good if you don’t need a huge scanner/copier/fax machine. It is convenient to keep around if you need to scan and email someone a paper or two.

    NOT THE BEST OPERATING SOFTWARE

BOUGHT THIS FOR MY WINDOWS 10 PC. I HAD A GREAT CANON PRODUCT, BUT CANON NO LONGER SUPPORTED DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS 10. THE EPSON SCANNER WAS THE ONLY SCANNER THAT WOULD OPERATE WITH WINDOWS 10. IT IS NOT AS INTUITIVE AS THE CANON SOFTWARE AND THE HARDWARE IS MORE CUMBERSOME (TOO MANY STEPS REQUIRED AND PUSH BUTTONS APPEAR TO NOT ALWAYS ENGAGE THE CORRECT MODE. I THINK I AM GOING TO RESCUE MY WINDOWS 7 PC AND DUMP WINDOWS 10. OR MAYBE TRY LINUX.

Scanner works great, but the software didn’t. There is an option to stitch a photo together, but on my Windows 7 computer it was grayed out. One of the reasons I bought it. All other features worked great.

    AMAZING FOR THE PRICE!!!

this is one of the best things i’ve ever purchased!! i bought this to do silly little scans of my art and sticker collection. i was worried the quality wouldn’t be good because this is one of the cheaper options that Amazon had. But the quality is nuts!! It’s so clear and the colors are amazing. I played around in the settings on the software to get it to how I like it and it looks so cool!! I put some photo examples so you can see. I can see every pixel no matter how far I zoom in. Worth the purchase and I’ll be using this non-stop.

Easy to set up and use.

Scans old color photographs as fast as I expected. Probably had unrealistic expectations about the software; the “Red Eye” elimination is non-existent and the color improvement is marginal at best. Again, my expectations were probably unrealistic. Black and white photographs (grayscale) are agonizingly slow – unless I’m missing something. We’ll see what happens when I try PhotoShop or some other editing tool on the scanned photos. If I can greatly improve them I’ll consider the Epson a good purchase.

    Excellent for scanning old photos

(Update at bottom of this review) Note: I thought it was dead on arrival, but left it plugged into the USB port for a few minutes and it came on. I should have re-booted the laptop after the software install. For the first 2 or 3 uses, I plugged in the USB and waited about 2 minutes, then it came on and worked perfectly. Since then, it comes on immediately. I have the software installed on both a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows 10 laptop, and experienced this delay with both laptops for the first 2-3 uses. (I wonder if it’s an MFT issue or DLL issue in Windows that causes the delay for the first couple times it’s used.)My old HP PSC had great software that allowed for dust/scratch removal, color restoration and enlargement of photos. Unfortunately it died and I found that newer HPs do NOT have any of these features, which means they are useless to me for scanning photos (HP has definitely lost their way in photo scanning). In looking around on the web, I found this Epson V39 and decided to take a chance on it. It’s proven to be just what I needed to replace my old scanner. In professional mode it lets you scan multiple photos to individual files while keeping corrections, enlargements etc to each picture. The color restoration works well and really livens up the old pics, including the black and whites. So far I’ve scanned a couple hundred old family pictures, with many more to go. It’s about as fast as any other scanner I’ve used, so I have no complaints there. It’s light-weight and also powered through the USB port, which is handy because there’s no power cord to lug around.I’m not going into detail on how to use it, but wanted to post this review for other folks like me who have old photos to scan and want a decent scanner. This is definitely a good product for the job and for the price.04-07-2021 I just ordered another one as my original died after 2.5 years and many photos scanned. In January I was planning to scan more when the scan mechanism hung on a wire inside. I tried disassembling and doing some fixes I saw on YouTube but did not work. You could see it beneath the glass and appears to be haphazardly made by Epson. However, this is the best photo scanner at the moment so I’m buying another with a 4-year extended warranty. I plan on contacting Epson about the issue and hopefully they’ll design it better. I really, really like the quality of the scans it produces once you learn the software, but it frustrates me the way the internal design is made which can allow the scan bar to catch on the wire. Epson can do better.

Great scanner, but a minor problem

This is my second Epson V39 in the past six years. The first one was excellent until it started to frequently shut down, with a message saying there was no connection (or something to that effect). After constantly closing the app and unplugging and plugging the cable back in, I finally ordered a new scanner and hoped the problem would be gone. Unfortunately, it does the same thing as the old one, although not as often. We’ve replaced everything that could be causing this, except my desktop computer, which is an Apple Pro and around 6 months old. Maybe there’s some kind of conflict between that model computer/software and the scanner, but it’s a real inconvenience to have that keep happening. Other than that, it’s a great piece of equipment and produces excellent scans of old photographs.

Basic scanner – lack of windows 11 bells and whistles

I purchased this scanner in the hopes it would upgrade my ease of scanning pictorial documents to edit for work. The sad thing is apparently most of the upgrades in the past few years from my last Epson scanner did nothing in regards to the ease of use of the product. It was fairly easy to use in the past. The new one physically works quite well. The software running it and the upgrades to that have apparently almost all been reserved for refinements to the cloud based storage model of the current day. In many ways that is fine too. However, the drag on all this is data transfer and that is still very slow for higher bitcount pictures. Suffice to say that this was a relative bargain to purchase, but in reality it did not solve any problems for me.

    TERRIFIC!

My friend does physical art on canvases and is looking to make an online web store. We spent the weekend scanning their canvases and this scanner (after adjusting its settings) was PERFECT. He was very emotional @ the end seeing his work digitized, and it came out to his standard before editing. A great device!

    Great Personal Scanner

I’d purchased the V39 for a couple of reasons. Simplifying my paper handling and scanning in several old photos from the family photo albums. I had some experience with Epson scanners and the technical specs on this one looked good. Looks like this thing is going to work for me and likely exceed my expectations. I’m running Mac Mojave 10.14.3 The scan quality of the photos is amazing. I’ve not exercised all of the software capabilities, but for photos, there are 4 options ranging from Full Auto to Professional. (see image) It seems to operate just fine from my USB 2 powered hub. Document Capture (a separate app with the V39) takes care of the OCR functions I was looking for to help with my paperwork flow. Why not 5 Stars? While the image quality is superb. A few issues;1. I chose not to follow the install instructions – this thing is USB – so it should be Plug n Play: WRONG. Don’t do what I did. I went right to the Epson web site, downloaded the current Mac software and then plugged the scanner into USB – buttons wouldn’t work, apps didn’t function right, very disappointing start. Without going into a lot of details, just use the install CD. After I did this, it linked to the download site at Epson and I did the download – there was the typical Mac install – which it didn’t prompt me through, and a further update. But after all that, the buttons worked just fine and I could select where all of the scanned files would be sent on my system.2. Because of the Mac OS, Epson’s software for stitching / joining photos is N/A. I do have a few old panorama photos so I’ll need something else to stitch them together.3. The OCR on pdf scans is not part of the pdf button capabilities. You need to start with the Mac App that Epson installs as part of the V39 (Document Capture) and then when it opens, select the Scan icon to fire up the scanner (image attached). And on my first test it didn’t work – perhaps because I’d scanned the document upside down, it worked on 2nd try. As it turns out, I may be handling most of my documents through my Evernote Premium which does OCR on imported pdfs, and I think images as well.As it turns out, I could have probably been fine with the less expensive V19 scanner, but I’m happy with the V39 so far

    Nice scanner for small projects.

It’s a good scanner for small manual projects. If you want to scan I few things, it’s good. But each scan, big or small is going to take about 3 minutes for start to finish. So if you have over a hundred photos, it might take a few months. If you have a big box of old photos like I do, it will takes approximately 1 year, 3 months, 2 weeks, a day and 6 hours to get them onto a computer. Fun stuff!

    Hard to tackle

I got to say that I do NOT appreciate the automatic photo cropping/trimming feature of the software. Firstly, you cannot use the scanner without the software. Secondly, no matter where you put your photo, even in the center of the entire bed, it applies a 1/8″ – 1/4″ crop. This is a hard crop. How has the software not been developed far along enough to actually detect the very edges of the photo and simply apply a crop until no white space remains, instead of just slamming down a 1/4″ trim regardless of straightness? You can also try to push the photo to the corners, but that will also give you a crop on the sides of the photos that are touching the border. The latest software using this in October 2020, also has glitches. There are times where I click SCAN and nothing happens. I have to close the software and reopen it. There are also times when clicking PREVIEW will open the preview window for half a millisecond and immediately close. What is my solution to this ridiculousness? Taking 2 credit cards and using them to apply a buffer between the border and then using Professional mode to apply a marquee crop to the photos that I know are all going to be the same size. Even the product manual recommends the method of taking objects to create buffers. You just have to make sure it is thin enough because photos that arc naturally won’t be flat on the bed since your tall buffer objects prevent the lid from forcing the photo onto the surface. The scanning however is quick. At 600 DPI, it is a 10-15 scan. You can tell when the scanner starts returning to home-base, so don’t be afraid to lift the lid and prepare the next photo while it still is making noise.

For the price, it does its job much better than expected!

I’m scanning books from another country to upload onto an archiving website for archival and references purposes and my goodness. This thing has served me well in the last eight or so hours that I’ve been using it non-stop. It really is plug and play! Look up its drivers, after a fast download with no restart required, I was ready to go!I did have to adjust the settings to my liking, and taking about an hour to figure out what is the optimal way to get my scans the way I want them. And hey, after five hours of non-stop scanning at 1200 DPI. All with editing and all done on a second computer while the first handled all the scanning. It worked really well! I’m very happy with the quality of the photos, just wish it would of let me do Full Size with 4800 DPI. But understandable ’cause that is rather large to work with.I’ve uploaded some scans that I’m planning to upload later on. Amazon will not let me upload 100MB + photos, so let me include some 300 DPI examples. The photos are extremely vibrant and the little editing I have to do is remove the negative space. This scanner also came same day! Ordered at 5 am, came around 9 am. Now that is quality service. Thank you, Epson and Amazon! Worth the money and time spent.

Wonderful scanner, HORRIBLE software and support.

I’m a member of an internet group that scans the cover art of albums (LPs) and this scanner came highly recommended, so I wanted to give it a try. My previous scanner was a Canon CanoScan LiDE220 – never had ANY issues with the Canon scanner or its software except the fact that I can’t get higher quality scans above 600dpi. So, I took a chance and purchased the Epson V39. I’ve had this thing about a month (give or take a few days) and I’ve regretted this purchase the entire time. FYI: I’m running Windows 10 64-bit on my machine. The scanner: I have no issues with the scanner itself. For the scans that I have been able to take, all of them are beautiful. Please remember that if you’re wanting scans at a higher dpi (600 and above), they will take time – the higher the quality, the longer the scan time. It’s basically an issue of quality versus quantity. Also, I’m not hearing the noise issue that others are complaining about. It’s a scanner – they have moving parts inside and they make noise. The volume is the same as all of the other scanners I’ve used, so there’s no issue there either. The software and support: HERE is where I have my issues and why I won’t recommend this scanner. First of all, the software worked for the first couple of days and then suddenly I can’t preview ANY of my scans. All I get is a black preview screen. I’m able to scan, able to save (images only) but I can’t preview them which prevents me from making any changes prior to saving. I tried changing the dpi and the format but nothing works. I updated the software and drivers to no avail. You can save your scans as images (jpeg, bitmap, tiff, etc…) but if you try to save a document scan as a pdf, then you get nothing but the black screen that you see in the preview window. I uninstalled the scanner and software, rebooted my computer, reinstalled the software and scanner and as soon as you start the scanning program, it goes right back to the way it was before you went to all of that trouble – settings and all. Also, if you should happen to update your software, please be aware that you will no longer be able to start the scanning program by pressing the buttons on the front of the scanner itself. EPSON is fully aware of this issue and asks you to install another program to fix this bug, but IT doesn’t work.I called support and they were absolutely no help. They also don’t know which programs are theirs because while the support person had me removing any and all programs labeled EPSON before rebooting, they missed 4 that weren’t. After our phone conversation, I had to go back myself and remove them so I could do a clean uninstall/reinstall – that didn’t work either. The person I spoke to was very nice and very patient with me, but they eventually told me (after over an hour and no luck at all) that they were going to have to submit a report up the line and see if someone else could assist me. It’s been 3 days since our conversation and NO ONE has bothered to contact me via phone, text or email.FYI: BOTH issues are all over the internet. I can’t tell you how many links I found with people having the very same problems with the preview screen and buttons. And some of those complaints go back a couple of years, which leads me to believe that EPSON has no desire to fix these either. They’re more than happy to sell you a product, but once it’s in your possession, you’re on your own. After spending about an hour on the internet, I was able to find someone that had found a workaround – several, to be honest, but only one worked for me. If you right click on the scanning program (EPSON Scan) and run it as an administrator, then you can get the preview screen to work. I actually had to preview something 3 times in a row before it showed me the entire length of the scanning bed, but that’s not something I should have to do every time I wanna use the preview option.Do yourself a favor and seriously consider another scanner. I love the device itself, but you HAVE to use EPSON’s software to use it and that’s where they fail their consumers.UPDATE: Still no response from EPSON and now my preview doesn’t work at all. Such a shame for such a nice scanner too.

V39 is Good Price – Quality Doc Scans – Subpar Photo Scans – Mac Software Problems – Slow Scans

This Epson Perfection V39 flatbed scanner is a good price for what you get when compared to the competition in Spring 2023, and it is useful for making quality document scans. It is also slim and lightweight, so it is easy to store and move around. It does have a fair number of issues, however. The associated Epson software is annoying but not completely impossible. I am using the Mac version of the recommended Epson drivers from the Epson website. My computer is a laptop: a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro running macOS Ventura version 13.2.1. I have to use a USB-C to USB adapter to connect the scanner to my laptop because I only have USB-C ports built in on my laptop. During install, I found that even though I checked for updates immediately, the Epson Software Updater showed that there were no additional updates to the drivers/etc. until after I had restarted my computer. This happened two or three times, so there were a few updates to the drivers, even though I had just downloaded them directly from the Epson site, and the Updater was glitchy in recognizing that updates were available.I have used this Epson Perfection V39 scanner for about a week now, and have completed approximately 100 total scans. Most have been 1200 dpi color document scans that I scanned to PDF, and a few have been 4×6 photos that I scanned to JPEG. I initially tried to select “Scan to Searchable PDF” for the documents, but the software could not successfully complete the process by Saving the image files to my laptop. I also found that I sometimes have to restart my computer to get the software to open up and allow me to start scanning. I will plug the cable into the scanner and my laptop, no light will turn on at scanner, and the Epson Scan 2 software will never open up after I click on it. I have to Force Quit the application to get it to stop trying, and then fully restart the computer before I can successfully open the scanner application and scan to my laptop.ALL of the preceding was/is annoying, but you can still get your scans in the end, and the document scans are decent quality. However, I am NOT impressed with the speed of the scans. It takes about 1.5 minutes per page of color document at 1200 dpi setting. That seems way too long since it’s not an improvement over what I was getting 10 or 15 years ago from my Canon All-In-One printer/scanner/copier/fax. My other true complaint about this flatbed scanner is that it did not impress me when I used it to scan 4×6 color photos. The images from the scanned photos looked worse than the originals in clarity and color, and each one took about as long to scan as the full-size color documents I had been scanning. Both of these last two issues, the speed of scanning and the quality of the photo scans, are genuine issues that may result in my returning the Epson Perfection V39 flatbed scanner. I still have a few more weeks to decide. At a minimum, I will have to purchase another device to make quality photo scans in the future because even with all the time in the world, this is just not good enough for high quality photo scans.

Installed and working with Linux in 5 minutes.

This is one of the few products that has a driver for Linux, and that I haven’t had to search the internet or tweak drivers to get working. I’m running MX Linux on my laptop, a Debian based distro – an excellent distro by the way. Just download the software from Epson support, untar, and run the install.sh script. Epson also has the source code available.-The buttons on the scanner don’t work with the Linux driver as it doesn’t support them.-The scanner scans at 4800 dpi, but not a full page. You have to reduce the scanned area and manually and enter the value in the resolution box in the settings as the drop down only goes to 1200. I was even able to scan at 6000 dpi (nice surprise) and odd resolutions like 535 dpi. I didn’t test higher resolutions as I won’t be scanning above 600 dpi.I give Epson a two thumbs up. This is a nice compact scanner that works well.

Very useful for digitizing my 12 x 12 scrapbook pages

The V39 may not feel like a solid machine but it does a surprisingly good job at converting my 12 x 12 physical scrapbook pages to a digital format. For reference, I am on a Windows 11 computer. To make a digital copy of a 12×12 page, I use SmartScan, which is the the downloaded program that has the stitching feature. My bunny pages were made using the advanced stitching feature. BTW, if ever an error message pops up saying that 2 parts can’t be stitched, try scanning a 3rd part (middle for example), which is what worked for me. It takes me around 2 to 2.5 hours to digitize between 32-40 pages with this scanner, so I’ll be at it a while as I have around 25 albums to scan.

    Worked like a charm

Several previous reviews suggested that this scanner had problems with the most recent versions of MacOS. I thought it was worth a shot anyway, given the price point, so I ordered one. I am using MacBook Pro computers with Apple M1 chips and the latest (as of now) version of MacOS and had absolutely no problems. The trick is to download the latest drivers from Epson and install them BEFORE you plug the scanner into the USB port on the computer. Epson allows you to select the exact OS version you have on your computer (MacOS or Windows) when downloading.Anyway, once all of the drivers were installed and the device plugged in, all was well. I wouldn’t say the Epson’s ScanSmart application was the greatest app ever written, but it did the job; allowing the user to scan a picture or document and save it to your computer. I only tried saving images as jpegs, but I have no reason to believe that the pdf option doesn’t work, as well. For the application I intend to use the scanner for (digitally archiving old photos), it should work just fine.

    Great Scanner

Great scanner for the price. I wish it had an SD card slot for scanning directly to a card. But it does have a USB port to scan via that to the computer. The software drivers are available on the internet and install easily and work well.NOTE: You can scan one picture at a time or multiples, just be sure to leave some space between them on the glass as that is how the scanner differentiates. After the scan, they will have a generic name but you can rename them via right click or a slow double click as usual. I have already scanned over 500 pictures for my first project.Although it purports to also allow some minimal red eye and color correction, I have not used those features.

Great scanner, photos, documents, and misc physical items.

I bought this for a long term scanning project of scanning our kids art work, misc items, photos, and documents. And it’s been great!ProsNo power cable. It gets power from the USB cable that connects to your computer. It’s not heavy fits easily into one of my desk drawers. It’s scans pretty fast. I mean it’s a consumer flat bed scanner don’t expect commerical grade speedy fast lol.It supports tons of settings with Epson software or with the default macOS scanner software.ConsI’m using this with my M1 MacMni so maybe the Epson software experience is different for Windows. But I’m not a fan of the Espon software. You’re prompted to install a ton of software, as is the usually thing all these companies do (Espon, Canon, etc.). Now I only have the Epson photo scanning software installed. Some times I use it but I’ve gravitated to the macOS scanner and printer software. This is 100% personal prefernece of course. But to me it’s a con because good hardware should have equally good software. But don’t let this deter you from putting it on a list of scanners your considering.Final AssessmentIf you need a scanner for a photo scanning project, to scan documents (bills, receipts, misc documentation) and don’t want to break the bank buying one, this is the one for you. I’ve shared online scanned photos and documents with family members and no one complained about the photo quality of the scans (color photos and old black and white photos).

I knock off 1 star because of the following: build quality is just OK (seems cheap), no independent power supply (powered by USB cable to PC), and no power button (when connected to your PC the scanner is always ON – you have to unplug the USB cable to turn OFF the scanner – super annoying). The included software is just OK, but gets the job done. The application interface closes after each scan (so, you have to relaunch the app for each page you are scanning – also annoying).Would I buy it again? Yes. The options are limited in this category.Note: If you need a longer cable (as I did), this will work with your own USB cable. Be sure to order the right type of cable! The manual is not clear on this. You need a USB 2.0 Type-A to Micro-B 5-Pin cable. I have a 15-foot cable and it works with no issues.

Software is terrible…So many issues…DO NOT buy this scanner.

I originally bought this scanner to create high-res digital images of my artwork. The instructions were a tad confusing at first, but I figured it out.I then installed the software needed to operate the scanner, onto my computer. I went through all of the proper steps, following the installation instructions to the letter. Then, I tried to use the scanner. And that is when the first issue occurred.I placed a piece of my artwork on the scanner bed and opened the proper program on my computer. I then tried activating the scanner. The software popped up a little window saying: “No Scanner Detected.” Okay. So I tried plugging the USB cable into a different port and restarting the program. Same issue. I repeated this process multiple times, trying the cable at least three times in each of the four USB ports on my computer.I tried using the buttons on the scanner to scan the picture, to no avail.I tried restarting the computer and doing it all over again, but that didn’t work. Finally, I figured I should try re-installing the scanner software. I uninstalled the software, restarted my computer, then re-installed the software. Then, I tried scanning again. And that is when issue number two manifested. After I re-installed the software the scanner was finally able to connect. So I tried scanning the picture again. I would like to mention that every time I opened the program it took about one minute to finally open, and took about ten to twenty seconds to register any clicking I did within the program. As well, it crashed just about every time I opened it.Back to the issue at hand: Both the product description, the operating manual, the box, and the scanner itself testified that it could scan at 4800dpi. So, I trusted the description and all that and attempted to scan at 4800dpi.The software then popped up a window saying that I couldn’t scan at that resolution. It did not give a reason as to why. I tried again and achieved the same results. I tried 1200dpi. Same. Thing. Happened. I tried 600dpi, it wouldn’t let me do that either. Finally, it said the scanner was ready to scan. But…it could only scan at 300dpi. I did the scan at 300dpi, and that is when issue number three happened. The image was scanned successfully at 300dpi. Then, I tried to save it. The software itself is not very user-friendly, and I had to look at the manual several times, and online, before I finally figured out how to save the scanned image. I followed the instructions…but, you guessed it, the program gave me an error saying the image could not be saved — again giving no reason as to why that was. The program then crashed. I tried again…eight times, the program crashing every time until the ninth time worked. It told me the image had been saved. I went to the destination folder to find that the image had, in fact, not been saved at all. I did a search of the entire hard-drive for the image, but it did not exist. So I tried saving it again. The program crashed. I did this about three times, everything following the same pattern. I troubleshot the program, I looked online for tech support, but none of the ‘solutions’ worked in the slightest. So, I re-installed the software. The same thing happened, every issue the same. I re-installed the software, restarted my computer, checked my computer for updates, multiple times, and in multiple orders. But, every single time, the program had the exact same issues. And, for the record, I checked the system requirements for the operation of the scanner, and my system exceeded every single one by a mile. After about ten more attempts, something finally seemed to work. Seemed being the operative word here. I opened the program, the scanner connected, the program didn’t crash, and it let me select the option of scanning at 4800dpi. I would like to emphasize again how completely user-UNfriendly the software is. Despite spending an hour and a half reading the manual and doing research online, the program was still hard to figure out. And that’s coming from a guy who is not generally stupid when it comes to this sort of thing.Anyway, I clicked “scan”. But, lo and behold, again an error window appeared, telling me I couldn’t scan at 4800dpi. This time it gave a reason: I did not have enough room on my hard drive for the image. I had over 1 Terabyte of empty space on my hard drive! That’s far more than enough for the estimated size of the file! I tried scanning again, with the same result. I tried 3600dpi. I tried 1200dpi. I tried 600dpi. Every, Single. Time. I got the same error message. Then, like before it let me scan at 300dpi. I did that but ran into the same saving problem as earlier.Being the extremely stubborn person I am, I repeated the process of uninstalling the software, restarting my computer, reinstalling the software, troubleshooting, scanning the software for problems, trying the buttons on the scanner itself, trying to scan at different dpi’s, trying to save the 300dpi image. I counted: I repeated this process, occasionally changing up the order of steps sixteen different times! But, every single time I ran into all of the same issues that I had been constantly having! Finally, I said enough is enough, packed up the scanner, and returned it. I would absolutely recommend not getting this scanner. The software is terrible, and it’s confusing to figure out. Do not get this scanner.

    So efficient to use, awesome

The ease of use is amazing. Just plug it in to my desktop computer and scan. The resulting images are excellent.

Everything that I ever wanted out of a very low cost flatbed

I needed to replace my 10+ year old Epson flatbed, which after many years of faithful service finally gave up the ghost in a cacophony of grinding plastic gears. I was very attracted to this unit because of its low price, its very thin conformation, and its promise of taking up so little room through the use of their clever ‘kickstand’. However, I was very concerned that considering that it was powered exclusively by the standard USB 5v DC provided power feed, that it would either under-perform or refuse to work at all (I had been previously burned by an experience with an allegedly USB powered Blu-Ray drive). But the prospect of getting the advantages mentioned above held sway in my decision; nowadays a seventy five dollar (tax included) roll of the dice is not what once it may have been.As it turns out, I’m now two weeks into my use I am thrilled to death. I have actually gained in both scan quality and resolution over my old dinosaur, which I guess should come as little surprise considering the speed of technological innovation in both the computer and the imaging sectors. On top of that, I was very pleased to find that the unit has not shown the first sign of being under-powered. In some of the Amazon customer reviews, I had read some comments about the machine being rather loud. I suppose that such things are relative, my new unit is neither louder nor quieter than my old dinosaur, so personally I don’t much mark any difference. However, there’s just enough operating noise in both that I’m sure that younger folks who are used to better might understandably feel just a little more sensitive to the effects than I. I guess that I might be as much a dinosaur as my old unit. For that matter the scan speed from both units pretty much matched (the newer one might win by a nose), so I guess that with me the same logic applies for that.I did experience a minor hiccough when installing the driver; that was apparently caused by my ignorance and my resultant failure to first uninstall the previous incarnation of Epson driver, a simple uninstall and reinstall solved the problem in quick order. Just for fun, I tried out the bundled OCR software; I say just for fun because I have little real cause to use such a program. I found it to be just a tad too inconsistent in its performance for my tastes, so again just for fun I got onto the internet seeking a better path. I finally found a highly rated commercial software called TopOCR, which sells for a whopping $4.99 U.S.D. (apparently not a sale price, and a free limited trail is offered). If you noted my previous comment about seventy five dollar rolls of the dice, you will not be surprised that a paid copy wound up on my HD. This decision was reinforced when I tried the aforementioned limited free trial, it proved to be quite noticeably superior in its fidelity to original content. So based on that, I have decided to give the unit a full five stars. That said, however, there are some things that perhaps I should make clear to any potentially incautious people; to me they are all things that should be immediately obvious from the unit’s very low price point. This unit is rather lightly built, speaking both with regards to both mass and to durability/rigidity. It is quite apparent that the design duty usage cycle level is not of the very highest order. That sort of stuff is clearly best found in a unit which is sold at a higher price point. But for my ‘retired old-guy on a pension’ purposes, it seems to show great promise. So if you have a house full of mechanically over-inquisitive kiddies or if you intend to digitize that 40 year old heritage family copy of Encyclopedia Britannica, you might want to try batting in a slightly higher league.

Almost as good as you can expect for around $100

This is a reasonable scanner. You’re not going to get 16 bits per channel color for $100 so lets just have some reasonable expectations here for inexpensive flatbed scanners. You also won’t be getting super fast scans for this price. The main “pros” here are the low cost, the fact that it does do reasonable 8 bit per channel color, and the software isn’t too bad. It’s also entirely powered off of USB and has some configurable copy/scan shortcut buttons on the front which might be useful for some people (though I never use them). And it has a space-saving side stand that’s optional but often works out fine. The number one problem I found with this scanner, and this might be enough for some people to want to take a pass on it, is that it fails to scan all the way to the edge of a page when the page is right up against the frame around the glass. This is true even when it’s aligned to the origin corner (the one with the little arrow that you’re supposed to align to). I’m unsure if this is a hardware or software problem, but it seems to happen with all the Epson software I’ve tried. While high-end features aren’t reasonable to expect from an inexpensive scanner like this, being able to scan the entire image all the way to the alignment edges is an entirely reasonable expectation that Epson has failed to meet. It’s important for photos and especially for “full bleed” manual artwork on paper. For this simple reason I have given this scanner 3 stars. If it weren’t for that it would have gotten 5 or at least 4.

    Working Great for Me

Despite all the bad reviews I took a chance.I wanted to scan mostly 4×6 photo prints to upload to an on-line site to make a photo book.Figured if it worked and lasted long enough to do 300 pictures, it would pay for itself compared to the cost of getting the scanning done outside. My level of computer savvy is I need a Dummies book to get anything done.So far I have done about 100 scans at 600-which is what the on-line site uses,on my windows 10 computer.Quick and easy to save and upload.I have experienced zero of any of the problems reported by others and am at a loss to understand some of the concerns.1.Software.There was no disk included.Simple link to their web site.Download and install the software.Puts an icon on the desktop.Click on it and operate the unit.Works perfectly with my new windows 10 .Didn’t try any of the, to me “fancy” alternate modes, like Professional or scan multiple pages to a single PDF or “stitching”,so can’t speak to any of that. I just set the resolution and get a nice JPEG digital image.Of course you can’t do multiple scans at the highest resolution.Takes too much space on the hard drive.Seems to me some of the negative people may have unrealistically expected high end professional level performance, which you can only get from units at much higher price points.2.Buttons.Don’t get this concern.Didn’t try them-why would you want to? Scan and save to my computer, so you have to turn it on.Also turns on the scanner.Easy to click on the icon.Used basic screen.Just click on “start scan”.3.Borders.The manual that downloads with the software tells you about the minimal edge reduction.Wasn’t a problem for me.There are two marks on the lower right hand corner.I just put the photo down by the marks, less than 1/4 inch from the edges.Doesn’t have to be exactly square or straight.Program scans it perfectly for me.4.Smudges.People are amazing.Yes if you put your fingers on the glass that isn’t good.Exactly like any other scanner.I just put the photo down and move it around by touching the photo. I use a soft plastic tooth pick to lift the photo up a bit off the glass, so I can remove it without touching the glass.Haven’t had any problems, nor had to wipe the glass so far.5.Noise.Another concern I don’t get. Some people must have very tender ears. The first pass is about 5% louder than my Brother MFC-8660DW, 3 in 1 printer-copier-scanner.Then you get a thumbnail of the scan to decide if you like it.Then the second pass is the same sound as the Brother. All scanners make a noise, don’t they?6.Plug.I don’t know the technical name but the mini USB end of the 4′ cable that plugs into the unit is not exactly robust. The comments alerted me to a possible problem so I plugged it in and put a little duct tape around it and I leave it alone.Just use the other end which is a normal USB, to plug in and out of my desktop.Mostly I leave it plugged in all the time and it automatically turns on when I boot up my computer and off when I log out.6.Time. It takes me 30 seconds to scan a 4×6 photo-from the time I click on start scan until the process is complete.7.Saving.This is another concern I don’t get.Probably because I am mostly clueless about computers. When a scan is complete a window pops up automatically, New Scanner under Pictures. The scan is placed there and saved by itself.I drag it to my desktop. The on-line site sees it there when I click on add photos.Drag and upload. Then I make a new folder in Pictures for that book, and drag it off the desktop into the folder.I am sure there are better ways but that works for me.8.Lid. It was heavy enough for me to flatted slightly curled photos. The hinges are a light plastic so I try and be careful. It stands upright while I place another photo. The manual says it is removable to scan bigger items but I haven’t tried anything except scanning photos as big as 8×11.Conclusion:I couldn’t be happier so far.The unit does exactly what I hoped for at what I consider a bargain price.

    Works great for my needs

I decided it was time to go through the old photo albums and digitize them. I had a nice Canon wireless scanner that was fine, quick, and made things easy, insert the photo and the rollers pulled it though and scanned. But after about 30 or 45 minutes it started having issues keeping things pulling STRAIGHT. So suddenly one side would grab better and it would skew some during the scan, pulling it crooked then half way though. Nothing worked to fix it, so I figured that one was now just a receipt scanner, and I needed a real one again for photos. This one was one of the top results in my google searches, so I figured I’d give it a try. I know the only difference between this and the one just below it was the software it came with. and I was not sure what I’d use it for long term, so I opted for the slightly more expensive version with a more complete software package.Scanning old docs and photos has been pretty much flawless. About the only issue I have is sometimes getting the auto crop right on scans where I have 4 to 6 photos on the glass. Usually it works, but sometimes it just doesn’t quite get it right, and two of them end up together. It’s rare enough that it doesn’t bother me. Generally it just offers up to save each one individually so I do not have to scan everything one at a time. And it auto-numbers them, so in the albums for family, for example, I just point it to the folder, tell it to name them FAMILY and all the photos are named family _#### in order. And the next batch just continues with the next available number. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Results seem good as well. I compared it to the Canon wireless before it started pulling things crooked, and these look better, colors are more correct, and a better contrast bewteen them. Definitely more like the photo than the other scanner.Came with the USB cable, and that’s the ONLY reason I’m taking a star off. This should’ve been USB C. USB C has been out for a while now, there was no need to use a Micro USB plug that’s over 16 years old now. Most people like me have been replacing items with the older style plugs so they could declutter and get rid of the old cables. Had this come with USB-C, it would’ve been an easy 5 star product.

This literally can be used anywhere, carried in a backpack.

Found an older version of this years ago for my mom, who suffers from (EDCD) Electronic Device Comprehension Deficiency. Lol! There’s no classification yet. Closest is computer illiterate but this isn’t a computing device. Anyway, she’s more like, “Oh, what’s this button do” competency. So I wanted to get her a scanner that is so simple, and yet literally works with the touch of a button. And that’s it. And found Epson’s Scanner. Years later, got this one for my sister too, who’s scanner on her printer died. To bad they don’t make the old one cause it’s thinner and less bulky than this one. It is the same animal, though. Just a little bigger. Don’t worry about care. My mom’s been manhandling hers for a number of years, and nothing broken yet. And as far as I can tell, it’s the only type of it’s kind now. This is perfect for students as the marketing strategy was why it came into existence. The niche was scanning pages by students in the library! So the simplicity, portability, and price is a no brainer!! Oh yeah, forgot to add scanner is above par, comparable to the $500.00 and up price range. Only negative is no Legal or Ledger size. Will keep recommending for years to come, as long as epson keeps making them.
