Works Well with Linux Mint with the Correct Software

I needed a flatbed type portable scanner I could use with my laptop when away from home. This one seems to meet that need for me (I haven’t traveled with it yet).Since I use Linux Mint, the Canon software wouldn’t work (shame on you, Canon, for not making Linux compatible drivers!), so I can’t comment on how well the scanner works with Canon’s software. I already use Hamrick’s VueScan software on my other two scanners, a Canon 9000F flatbed scanner, and a Fujitsu ix500 duplexing, ADF scanner (both of which are NOT what I would consider portable!) and it works well with this scanner once I updated it. I haven’t tried to use any of the scanners buttons since Vuescan easily and conveniently does it all from within the software. When I first tried to use the scanner with Vuescan, I went nuts trying to get the software settings to work the way I needed. It then dawned on me that I hadn’t updated VueScan in quite a while since “nothing was broke so don’t fix it.” After I updated Vuescan (although the .deb version would probably work, the tarball—.tgz—version, when extracted, had a simple to use installer that automagically updated the current installation without changing the settings), everything started working perfectly.Another reviewer reported getting good results with the free to use xsane. The first time I used it, I noticed that it was hard to slide paper over the platen. I lightly moistened a microfiber cloth with water and gently wiped down the platen. After that, paper easily slides across the platten. The stand for the scanner is a joke. Trying to position a document or whatever on the scanner while it is in the stand will be awkward at best. One will have to be really hard up for space to find it useful. I put mine in the drawer of items that will never see daylight again. Also, my Canon 9000F uses the upper right corner has “home” for locating documents on the platen. The LiDE 400 uses the lower left corner as “home”. This will take a bit of getting used to.Now for the pros and cons.Pros:1. Inexpensive2. Compact for a flatbed scanner that can handle up to letter size documents.3. Lightweight4. Runs off USB power so no power cords needed. (Canon says USB 3.0 is necessary for this scanner but I was able to run it just fine off a USB 2.0 port on my laptop; your “mileage” may vary.)5. When using VueScan and the settings have been sorted out, it’s easy to use.6. Good quality scans.7. 48″ long USB cableCons:1. Anything being scanned must fit flat on the platen to be fully in focus, unlike my Canon 9000F which can focus on parts that may be as much as 1/2″ from its platen (for my intended use, that will not be a problem).2. It’s noisier than my other scanners (not a big deal for me).3. The lid is flimsy. This will be a problem when transporting the scanner since the lid won’t be able to protect the glass platen unless precautions are taken to protect them (I’ve ordered a larger laptop bag so I can safely carry the scanner in the same bag with my laptop).4. The lock slide on the bottom is stiff to move. It has to be locked when transporting the scanner and unlocked when using it. Being on the bottom of the scanner, it will be easy to forget to reset it every time the scanner is transported and set up for use.5. 48″ long USB cable (whether that is a pro or con will vary from person to person). For me, the cons were not enough for me to remove any stars from the rating. It should perfectly meet my needs. I do a lot of scanning (including some hard to scan items) so I wouldn’t want to use this as my go-to flatbed scanner at home, especially since my old 9000F is still going strong but, for occasional use, the LiDE 400 should last me a long time.BTW, the description is wrong; it’s 1.75″ x 9.875″ x 14.5″.

Solid scanner with convenient interface and no frills

It does its job reasonably well. Sometimes I wish I bought an scanner with an automatic document feeder instead. Nonetheless, the CanonScan Lide 300 scans pages quickly enough with a much smaller footprint. The touch buttons are convenient in this regard.

An inexpensive, adequate quality flat bed scanner

Canon CanoScan LiDe 400 Slim Scanner, sold by Canon. After almost 20 years of reliable performance, my trusty Microtek SlimScan C6 flatbed finally bit the dust. I seriously considered buying another C6 (new old stock) because it was so reliable, easy to use, and full of features. BUT, the C6 probably won’t interface well with newer versions of Windows (i.e., anything later than XP), so I decided to look for something newer. For $ 90, the LiDe 400 seemed to fit both my budget and needs. Here’s the PROs and CONs I have found:PROs:1. Really inexpensive2. Pretty simple to install on any Windows computer with Win 7 or higher.3. Does a really decent job of scanning documents and photographs (see below).CONs:1. Doesn’t come with a manual (hardcopy or on the CD), and there doesn’t seem to be a way to download a whole manual from the Canon LiDe Website (it’s a pain in the ass to have to find the information you are looking for, piece by piece, on the Website… a downloaded complete manual would be so much easier).2. The cable from the scanner to computer is relatively short (a little less than 5 feet). That’s fine for hooking to my laptop that sits adjacent to the scanner, but doesn’t work for my laptops or PC that are at more distant workstations. It would be really nice if Canon provided a cable that is 2 – 3 time longer, or at least provided cable specifications so you could buy an appropriate longer cable (it’s apparently a “special” cable… you can’t just use a run-of-the-mill extension).3. You can’t remove the scanner bed cover to facility scanning larger media. With my C6, you could take off the cover so you could scan large media like maps without having to fold (damage) the original. For me, this is the most serious downside to the LiDe 400, and is something Canon could have easily rectified with a different type of cover hinge.4. Apparently doesn’t work with earlier version of Windows. I’d really like to use the scanner with my old XP desktop, because I have lots of really good XP-based image processing software. The work-around appears to be to buy VueScan drivers from Hamrick. That will be one of my next tasks. As far as use, so far I have been reasonably satisfied with the Canon LiDe 400.I used the front buttons to scan pages and create a pdf document, and it was a really simple and intuitive process. The Auto Scan front button made a decent copy of a photograph, but you can get much better photo scanning results (including higher resolutions than what “Auto Scan” provides) using the Twain compliant ScanGear software that is included.ScanGear lets you do some limited image correction and post-processing. It’s OK, but the ULead PhotoImpact software that came with my Microtek SlimScan C6 was FAR more versatile. In particular, ScanGear has very limited options for descreening when scanning printed images (like newspaper or magazine articles, or some types of laser printed originals). I’m really hoping that when I install the VueScan drivers on my XP machine, I can interface the LiDe 400 with the much better PhotoImpact image processing software that I already have.Overall… the Canon LiDe 400 scanner is a decent, inexpensive, basic-use flatbed scanner. For most people who just want to scan letter-size documents, or digitize a bunch of photographs with good resolution, this scanner will more than suffice.FINAL NOTE: Like most inexpensive flatbed scanners, you are limited to original documents that are no more than 8.5 x 12 inches in size. Supposedly, there is a way to scan larger originals in pieces, and then “stitch together” the pieces to create a full-size digital product. I haven’t tried this feature, so I can’t tell you if it really works as advertised or not.Original review: 15 June 2022. This review will be updated once the Hamrick VueScan drivers are installed, or if any problems with the scanner are subsequently found.

    Best Cheap Scanner, Period

Come on, look at how much it costs! Beats just about any combo scanner/printer unit I’ve ever tried. For the money it can’t be beat. Makes decent scans, though I hate how these cheap scanner cut off the edge of the image. Can anyone make an affordable scanner that scans the ENTIRE scan bed? How hard is that? I have to use a piece of tape to space out from the edge. I only gave the user interface 3 stars because the button on the front are worse than useless, they actually get in the way. The drivers didn’t work at all and came with a bunch of nonsense. Luckily I’m on a Mac and just used Preview, which is fine and has the basic settings I need, without any drivers needed. Anyway, if this is your budget range… just get it, you’ll dig it.

Great Canon Lide 400 Scanner BUT note the SERIOUS CAUTION in my Review

Works Great! I’ve scanned scores of photos using 600 dpi and am very pleased with the simplicity and results. Scanned a few documents with similar opinion.EXTREME CAUTION: Access the Canon Website for Driver download and Product registration by typing ij.start.canon in the address bar and not into a browser search. I typed it into a Google Chrome search instead and came upon a Canon site for Driver download that unknowingly took me to ij.start.cannon (note the mispelling). This is a very legitimate looking Canon site. When I entered the scanner model I received an error code and a phone number to resolve the issue. The phone number took me to a third party called MS Assistance LLC, who told me that they represented Canon and that the error code meant that I could not download the driver because I had foreign ip addresses connected to my network. I believed them and paid them $100 to connect to my computer and fix the problem. They then downloaded the driver to my computer for me. Then they told me that I needed a product called Network Privacy Shield to protect me from foreign invaders in the future. I believed them and paid another $199.99 for the software that they downloaded for me while still tied to my computer. Days later, my sister told me that Canon would never operate this way and that I needed to call Canon. I called Canon and was told that they had no knowledge of this company MS Assistance or of the error message that I received. While on the phone, they directed me to type ij.start.canon into the address bar and that took me to the correct Canon webpage that had my driver to install AND product registration that I hadn’t even thought about before. Regarding the supposed Network issue, Canon told me to talk to my Internet provider. Charter-Spectrumtold me that I should NEVER allow anyone to connect to my computer over the phone and that who knows what files they could have stolen when connected. They said that I needed to take my laptop back to Apple to see if any malware or damage was done.I have found that the software Network Privacy Shield is a Google Add-In available on the Google Store and it is made by driversandshield.com. I called driversandshield.com and asked a question about the legitimacy of their product Network Privacy Shield protecting against foreign IP addresses connecting to my computer network and then called MS Assistance at their phone number and asked the samequestion and the person said that ‘I just talked to you and answered that question’. MS Assistance IS also driversandshield.com; the maker of Network Privacy Shield. They are one in the same. MS Assistance LLC operates out of an apartment in an apartment building in Austin TX and driversandshield.com supposedly operates out of an apartment in an apartment building in St Cloud MN.Do you think this is a SCAM?

    Basic flatbed scanner

After about 3 or 4 years of yeoman’s service, my Canon CanoScanner LIDE 110 gave out, and since the LIDE 110 is no longer available, I bought the LIDE 300. It is essentially the same machine, as far as I can tell – – a basic flatbed scanner. Also has the same 4 shortcut buttons: Scan and create PDF file; Copy and print; Copy and send as email; and Autoscan. I have Windows 7. The scanner comes with a CD for installation, but I downloaded the setup file from the Canon website noted in the installation instructions. On-screen instructions were clear and the installation went smoothly. Be forewarned — the final setup step takes close to 10 minutes, and during that time, there is nothing on the screen to indicate that the installation is still progressing and is not just hung up. Don’t hit the cancel button — just be patient. Also, don’t get flustered by another idiosyncrasy. Each time you connect the scanner to your computer, nothing happens for about 3 seconds. Then the machine wakes up and scrolls a very short distance for about 3 seconds. And after that little “dance”, you’re ready to scan. If you try to scan before then, you get a “Cannot detect scanner” message. The actual scan is a little faster than the old LIDE 110 — about 8 seconds for a full scan. Colors come out pretty good (see sample). Only complaints I have are: (1) it’s a little harder to plug in the USB cable into the LIDE 300, because the terminal is recessed slightly into the machine, so you sometimes have to fiddle with the cord for a bit before you manage to plug it in, and (2) just like for the old LIDE 110, also for the LIDE 300 you cannot remove the lid in order to scan thick books, or books that are too large to fit on the glass. The first time I used my old LIDE 110 to scan a big book, the cheap plastic socket that holds one end of the lid hinge snapped. At first I was miffed, but then I realized that it was a big advantage, because from then on, I could just lift the lid out of the hinge sockets whenever I had to scan a book. I think on my new LIDE 300, I’m going to use a hot soldering iron and purposely cut open one of the plastic hinge sockets, and solve the problem the same way. Maybe Canon will wake up before I buy the next version, because it wouldn’t take much engineering prowess to design a removable lid. All in all, this LIDE 300 seems to be a good scanner. If it serves me for at least 3 or 4 years, I will be pleased with my investment.

    I can’t believe it’s this good.

This little scanner is quote the workhorse. When I got it I sat down and scanned about 3500 documents – some text, some photos. Never a glitch. And the results are nice. Now I didn’t expect this given the price, but it certainly exceed my expectations. I know high end scanners, I used them for a living and most scanners I used cost several thousand dollars. Does this inexpensive little Canon beat those? No, not at all. But it does very well on both text documents and photos. The bulk of my scanning was black and white 8×10 photos from the 1950-1970s. The Lide 300 captured all there was to get, no problem with shadows, no blown out highlights. I scanned the 8x10s at 400 dpi and they look great. I experimented with 600 dpi, but the difference in detail was so slight that it wasn’t worth it. At 600 dpi 100% zoom there was a tiny bit more detail than at 400dpi, but mostly it was just more grain. It felt like I had reached the limit of what the prints had to offer. Anything smaller than 8×10 I scanned at 600dpi, just for sake of it. Color photos were nice too, even the faded ones. Printed test of course was clean and crisp.Software: I used the included Canon software 90% of the time, but also scanned a lot of pages with Adobe Acrobat and some with Photoshop. No problems at all. The Canon software is very basic looking, but actually has all the adjustments and settings I needed. Even for difficult scans with low contrast or color backgrounds, there was always either a basic or advanced setting that worked. The software interface can be a bit clunky in places, but you get used to it. Take some time and try the different settings, you can even customize them.Overall I am amazed at what Canon can do in a sub $60 USB powered scanner.Yes, it is noisy, especially on fast scans. But you get used to it. And for the price and the quality, I don’t mind the noise.

    Canon Canoscan Lide 400

I purchased a Canon all in one printer because I needed a new scanner. The software was so bad I had to send the unit back twice. Scans were so light they were useless. Research showed this is a known issue with this brand, which used to be superior. It wasn’t the equipment, it was the software (long story there). So in looking for a scanner, this model kept rating as best affordable scanner among users, professional reviewers and artists scanning artwork. I was skeptical of Canon after the all in one experience, but I gave it a try. I installed the drivers from the disk onto Windows 10. Well, the disk has no drivers. It’s an installation wizard which goes to the website and retrieves the drivers. Then I downloaded them from the website and used the download to install to my Windows 11 unit. Again, NOT THE DRIVERS! The download unzipped and the .exe was the same installation wizard that the disk gives you, and it went to the website to download the drivers. What happens 5 years from now if I ever have to reinstall the drivers? I don’t have them. Will they be available from Canon or will the scanner then be unusable? Anyway, the installation was easy and worked on both Windows versions. It’s the same scanner user interface on both computers. You go through and set all the settings for each option. I find scanning to desktop easiest, and it was doable. There is no power button, it’s plug & play and powered by your USB connection. It works, and in my opinion is very quiet compared to videos I saw of the unit. It works from the scanner to the computer by the front buttons and from the scanner interface itself, which has more controls. You still have to set the settings on the interface to scan from the buttons on the unit anyway. The depth of color seemed normal as opposed to my previous experience above. In the past, I scanned on 200 dpi and had good scans. This used 300 dpi which makes a bigger file and I got good scans of documents and ok scans of pictures. Attached is a sample of a scanned document with pictures on it. The picture quality is somewhat degraded. I tried the COPY button which copies to your printer and you can see, it completely changed the colors and changed the text size and clarity, but the same copy to print to pdf instead of to the printer created a very clear document in the correct colors and clear text onto the computer, which then printed out nicely. I tried calling about the copy to printer function inverting all the colors, only to find there is no tech support for this product. You cannot be connected to a human. It’s FAQ’s and “online ‘support’ “ only, which means you’re completely on your own. Anyway, there are ways to make it work if you experiment. Scan Gear helps but when you get to color adjustment forget it. You need a digital image editor instead. Scan Gear is where you can adjust to the highest possible resolution. Regular settings only let you do 600 dpi. As far as scanners go, I’ve used many, when they used to make them well as opposed to now, I’d say this is pretty good if you’re using it now and then. All scanners change the original image slightly. Text documents are very good. Hopefully it still works after a year. Other reviews say it stops working after a period of time. Nothing is good anymore. Price wise, it’s a bit high for the craftsmanship of the unit. Treat it gently. The stand is a bit baffling. Why would you scan with the unit standing on its side and the cover opening up? Why would you use the stand to store it that way either? The rules have always said that that’s bad for the electronics in anything.

    Excellent Introductory Scanner

This is a solid product for the price. At 300DPI, it scans fairly efficiently and the quality is acceptable for archiving. At 600DPI, the machine operates at a reasonable speed as well; however, at 800DPI or 1200DPI the scan is painstakingly slow, taking minutes for even a polaroid size scan.It works, it’s sleek, and it’s light. Easily portable as it only requires power from the USB port. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to just scan documents, photographs, or small art projects.Does not scan negative films.

First one DOA; Second one worked

First a quick word of warning. This device will require a USB3 port. It is clearly written on the scanner that it requires 900ma. The USB2 standard is 500ma. While this wasn’t an issue for me, there are still many computers with USB2 ports. Since the scanner is USB port powered, Canon provides a USB cable with the scanner. Presumably this is so the cable can deliver sufficient power. One less thing for the customer to screw up.Since I had to do a return, I’m sure there will be a question regarding did the customer release the lock. This is my second Canon Lide scanner so I am familiar with the shipping lock. Further Canon’s markings made it hard to ignore the lock. This is a basic flatbed scanner. The first one shipped to me reported data errors. It was seen and recognized correctly by my computer on both windows 10 and Linux. Amazon shipped a second one that worked. The interesting thing is they acted differently. The defective one started moving it’s internal mechanism as soon as plugged in. The functional unit sits there a bit then does it’s internal calibration or whatever a flatbed does. It is almost like the defective one had the wrong firmware. My goal was to scan documents for taxes. Nothing critical. I only used grayscale. I just needed a flatbed to replace my old Canon Lide 30. It worked fine for that task and will be put back in the box and into a closest until I need it again. For what it is worth I tested the DOA scanner on both windows 10 and Linux. It was truly a rock with a USB port. The functional scanner worked on Linux so I assume it also works on windows 10. Regarding Linux, Canon actually provides a version of their “scangear”. I used “skanlite” (common Linux program on repos) but did test the Canon linux binary and it also worked.

Fast, efficient and easy to use

This scanner is easy to set up and easy to use, although I got it for one intended use, due to it’s ease of operating, I’ll be using it for numerous projects. If you need to digitize documents efficiently, but with quality and accuracy this is a great scanner to consider.*I have not used this scanner for photos yet, so I’m unable to comment on its ability with scanning color.

    What I needed

Currently going through some medical problems. I needed a scanner so I could copy paper mail into my computer for better record keeping and to email out copies as required. Installed software from the Canon website since my computer does not have a CD drive. It was quick and easy. Made a couple test scans and love it. You can do multipage PFD’s. That is a plus for me. I did not think it would do that since it does not have a sheet feeder. My first try to do a PDF resulted in an on screen prompt/instruction on how to do it. Worked great for a 4 page letter I had to scan in. It came out upside down but there is a rotate tool on the top of the open document to fix that. Only draw back is it did not let me select a destination for the scan. It just went to the DOCUMENTS folder and I found it by the scan date. As I get used to this there may be a way to select the destination folder. But. for now, I am OK with this.

    Works Great

After 29 years, I needed to replace my Canon flatbed scanner, which is no longer compatible with most of today’s technology. I received my Canon CanoScan Lide 400 scanner this week and have used it only twice. However, the quality of the photos that I scanned was excellent. I have not tried the “scan and edit” PDF feature, nor can I rate tech support, since I have needed neither. The scanner is easy to install by following the included directions. Directions are clear and easy to understand. The included scanner stand snaps on/off quickly with ease.Pairing it with a wireless printer worked well. There is one design feature that creates a slight problem for using the scanner stand. The scanner stand feature appears to be made for use on the right in a work station. It is a bit awkward to use on the left, since the control button are away from the user. However, the scanner works well in any location when flat on a surface.

    User Friendly Scanner

I had a Canoscan flat bed scanner for over 20 year-‘loved it but it finally gave out. I recently purchased en Epson V600 flat bed scanner to replace it. I was a real pain to use: numerous settings and steps to get to an actual scan, slow scans… I need a scanner that’s user friendly and makes fast scans as do genealogical research and have a lot of photos, docs etc to do. I gave up trying to deal with the Epson-so decided to ‘bite the bullet’, take my loss and get a another scanner-this time went back to Canon. ‘Am so glad I did. This Canoscan’s settings are easy to use. There isn’t even a on/off button. You just click on its icon on my pc and a small scan box comes up. Once you’ve done your settings-all you do from that box is to click auto scan, photo scan etc. and the scan is made. You set your scan to got into a selected folder. You click OK and there it is-in the folder. And the photos really look good. I also like its slim design. Its even easier to use than my previous Canoscan. I should have gone with Canon in the first place. Better late than never!

Easy to use but has drawbacks

I wanted an easy to use and portable scanner for photo scanning. This was my reaction to this product CanoScan Lide 300 Scanner:Pros: Nice slimline design. Fits within the appropriate computer sleeve or bag. Setup is easy if you have access to USB 3.0 port.Cons: For my purposes (photo scanning), there was no easy to use software included. The interface cable was a USB mini to USB A hi-speed cable – not desirable. Scanning was not as fast as expected.I returned this item and upgraded to the Canoscan Lide 400. That solved most of my issues and kept the positive aspects of portability and simple connectivity. The 400 series uses the USB C interface.

Mac Mini M2 Pro with Sonoma OS

Mac Mini M2 Pro. The application is working on the computer. Searched web with ‘canon scanner’, on the Canon site found the LIDE 400, went to the bottom of the page to Product Support, clicked Software & Drivers, on the Downloads page it recognized I had a Mac, and for version I picked macOS Sonoma v14. Download was 23.9 MB. I installed this download. I also downloaded the driver from the instruction pamphlet link that came with the scanner. That driver file was 10.2 MB, but I did not install this smaller file. I don’t know why they are different sizes. Do not forget to unlock slider on the bottom of the scanner!Early in testing. Thought there might be a slight color shift; however, after looking at the originals in natural light at a window the match is near identical. Artificial light biases the comparison.Did not use tech support at any time.On the Mac, I was able the add a Mac ‘Image Capture’ application from System Settings under Printers & Scanners. Use the ‘+’ to add. This allows a higher number of resolution selections, up to 4,800. With this scanner interface you must use Overview first, then Scan.

Pretty good scanner for an amazing price!

When i saw this scanner was a little over $50, i was a little sceptical on it, not expecting it to be that great. Set up was easy(was able to do so on my old microsoft surface 3 without a hitch), and it turns on with the device its connected to, so its perfect for small spaces and on the go! Its about the size of a decent sized laptop, so it fits in a messenger bag, so just find a table at a cafe and scan away! No outlet required! The images it produced were crisp, just a LITTLE over saturated, but nothing a little color correcting cant fix.I use this to scan the pages of a comic im writing and drawing, and if you scan a page with color, it does end up a little over saturated, but again, nothing a little color correcting cant fix.It scans fairly quickly, but you do have to hold the buttons down for a second for it to register it, not a quick press and scan. But all in all, its a good scanner, its lightweight, portable, and all for an amazing price! If it works on a device from 2015, it will more than likely work on any laptop or computer you have, no matter the form its in, so long that it has a usb port.If your a student who needs to scan notes or textbooks into your computer for easy access, this would be perfect for that, working best with black and white images, and if your wanting to scan colored pages(like art and stuff) into your computer, just be warned it will be more saturated in color, and will need to be color corrected to the original saturation, but it does keep the image crisp.Aside from the saturation issues, i havent had a problem with the scanner at all. If it one day breaks for some reason, im DEFINITELY getting another one! Its THAT good of a scanner!

    Almost perfect

Love this little scanner. Almost perfect for scanning my art but my one issue is this does not ever pick up accurate pinks. Especially if it’s hot/neon pink! It will not scan correctly and I’m not good enough at post processing to accurately color correct. Everything else seems to be good with it. Love that it’s small and just needs to connect via usb. I have an older iMac and it works just fine connecting and scanning. I use the native scan app that Mac provides.

    Good product for the price

I have a tremendous amount of scanning to do and used it on a daily basis; up to 10 hours a day of constant use over the course of three weeks. I had no issues with it. I’m hoping that the next round of scanning will be as productive. I just have to make myself do it.

    User friendly

Purchased this to scan some old family photos. This device is easy to use and the scans look almost better than the original photos. It only took a few minutes to set up and begin using. It was easy to save to a thumb drive or to the computer and it takes only a few seconds to scan each item. It’s lightweight and easy to transport. Worth the investment if you have a lot of photos or items to scan. Highly recommend.

Not for small or really any business use besides documents

This works fine as a document scanner, and even works fairly well as an easy, low-cost option if you’re looking to digitize old photos. BUT, if you are looking to scan multiple items in succession for sale on eBay, Etsy, a personal website, or anything remotely similar, you will save yourself some frustration by finding a better option. First, the scanner software is extremely basic and very limited. Until you close out of the scanning program, your images will not appear in the destination folder. That is really bad if you want to check the scan quick to see if you need to redo it. Second, this scanner tends to wash out and “whiten” paper items. This means currency, sports cards, comic books, postcards, and really anything paper will require you to mess with the settings to get a realistic scan. Third, after EVERY SCAN those settings reset to the default! Even if you save a custom setting, it will reset back to the default settings and you will have to re-select your custom setting EVERY TIME YOU SCAN. There is no way around this, believe me I’ve checked. This is strictly designed for someone who scans one item every so often. Unless you have the professional version of Photoshop or another major imaging program that you can scan directly into using their software, this is solely for the casual user. The software I got with multiple Cannon scanners ages ago was so much better; they just mailed it in on this one.

Works fine, I already had a good printer.

Unit is much smaller than last “do it all” one, and tucks under a shelf. Forget about the built in prgram, just go to Canon “My Garden” much simpler.

    Quality images, with some quirks.

Overall, the scan quality is very good… sharp, clear and true. On-par with what I expect from Canon. From a hardware perspective, it is good. It also has a multi-hinged cover to allow for thick items like books, and it pulls power from the USB port, so no need for another wall wart. Bear in mind, when they say 4800×4800 DPI res, I believe that is the internal optical resolution of the scanner… for digital resolution within the software, I can’t get it to scan higher than 600 DPI… odd because I had a scanner 20-years ago that did up to 1200 DPI. Same deal in the native Windows scan utility… 600 max. Also, even with the latest Canon utility software and driver installed, the buttons on the scanner fail to initiate any action. I can only initiate scans from within the software. Not sure if I have some critical services blocked, but have not had any luck with the hardware buttons. Overall, it is good enough for what I need, but keep these issues in mind if you need more.

Great Value – Great scan Quality

For the price, this little flatbed scanner is great! Easy to set up, easy to use, excellent quality scans. I have not done any photos yet, only documents which is my main purpose for it. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because t is a little noisy and it keeps “cycling” whether in use or not. I haven’t timed it but it seems to do some sort of cycling every 5 to 30 minutes. I do not know why it must do that. Beyond that, I am more than happy with this purchase.

    Seems to do the job

This scanner, in spite of bearing the Canon name, is very cheaply made, but appears to do a good job of scanning. It arrived with a broken latch and frankly, I will handle with kid gloves to keep it from falling apart. Should work ok for my needs, but if you want a high quality product, this is not for you.

Chromebook / Chromebox Communication Error Fix

Save yourself the aggravation before you plug this scanner into your Google Chromebook or your Google Chrome box, flip it over and slide the switch on the underside from the locked position to the unlock position. Aside from that aggravating first issue, the scanner works like a typical Canon scanner, excellent quality!

    Quality, cost effective scanner

I purchased the CanoScan Lido 400 to replace a 20-year-old Epson, and I am very happy with it. I mainly use it to scan documents to PDF. The Canon scanner works great, and the interface is super easy to use. I have had it for 8 months now and have had zero issues with it. It is relatively quiet and powers off the USB, which I like. I would recommend the Lido 400 to anyone who needs a basic scanner for occasional use.

It is a good scanner of photos, documents, etc. It can be complicated and it would be helpful to have a Quick Start type manual to quickly demonstrate/instruct some of the most basic tasks. Say create a PDF of a document, scan a photo print, etc.

A nice piece of equipment for the price.

I wanted an economical scanner that would scan images as well as documents, for importing into graphics programs. This Canon was recommended by someone and I like it just fine. The only issue I had, was that I asked Geek Squad set it up, and they set it to use Windows Fax & Scan, which turned out to be a very inadequate interface. I called Canon for help, and their tech showed me how to use the CanoScan’s own Scan Gear, which supports all kinds of adjustments that the Windows app did not. NOTE: To access Canon support, I had to sign up for a subscription, but I was told I could cancel it immediately after my session, which cost $5. This I did and then everything was fine. This is not a high-end scanner, obviously, but it is a good work horse and has given me no trouble, once I learned how to use it! It is just fine for basic scanning.

    Arrived broken

The scanner arrived broken and with a hardware issue, but I couldn’t have known that, so I spent around 8 hours trying to figure out the problem, across 3 computers (mac & pc). I called canon support, spent over half an hour on the phone for him to tell me I HAD to buy the mac usb to usb-c adapter, that the generic one I had was the problem. So I spent $20 on the mac adapter. Because the rep said that was the problem. No dice of course. All of the other recommendations he had for me were of course things I had already tried a million times. I would have called canon support sooner, but it’s really difficult to find a number to call. I had to set up a canon support account and verify my purchase.Called again after trying all the same debugging methods, across computers. After a month of trying to figure this out and wasting SO MUCH time to where it’s affected my business goals & deadlines, the rep asked me to check the position of the scanner bar after the scanner started up, and it appears to be a hardware issue. So now they’re sending a new one, and I have to go out of my way to return the old one. Incredibly frustrated at the time I’ve wasted and the mediocre support received in the first call. For reference I have a mac desktop running Ventura 13. Hoping with the new scanner it’ll actually work.

Generally well made and works well. Did not have a current software driver so had to download a generic piece to use it. A little heavy but that is probably a good thing for in-use needs.

This is a scanner worth having

It’s my third Canon scanner I’ve had. Due to my bad treatment of the previous two I was anxious to get this one. I’ll be good and careful with it. It does as good a job, as expected, and the online info Canon has available for it is great.

Overall this is a decent Scanner

I found this scanner to be decent for my PC. It’s fast enough. I got it because of it’s size where you can scan legal size documents, as opposed to just 8.5 x11 documents. Some criticized the software as mediocre and lacking but I found it to be ok. The only criticism I have about the software is that I thought the software from my previous Canon Scanner lide 200 as being better in terms of the interface and looks. It’s like they didn’t put that much effort into it’s appearance. They give you this “IJ Scan Utility” that works. It does the same thing. You don’t really need to get another program because it does the job. It is just not pretty but it is basically easy to use. So I essentially recommend this scanner.

Perfect for older folks who struggle with tech

I think this scanner is awesome! I purchased for for my 90+ mother who wants to scan all the old photographs for the kids and grandkids. I think she does “fair” with technology for her age (example – she has a cell phone but definitely not a smart phone, she uses an iPad for simple tasks and games but gets stumped by error messages or anything out of the ordinary). I wrote out a few very simple instructions and she is able to scan and name each picture without any issue. And it scans multiple pics at a time and separates them in the folder. Perfect! Having a simple Auto Scan button is awesome! For her purposes none of the other buttons are necessary. Everyone in the family will end up with a thumb drive of pics (I’ll handle that part) and she’s very excited about it. Big win!!

    So far, so good…

So far it’s been working, good color in the photo scans. A tip if the scanner software refused to recognize the connection (very common problem from other reviews I’ve read). So I restarted the computer, plugged it again into the USB port, then accessed it through the control panel and that worked (do a Google search for this since Amazon sadly won’t allow helpful URL’s to be posted.and it worked. Make sure the lock on the bottom is set to “unlock”.
