For document scanning you can’t beat the price.

This scanner is simple to install and to load the software. Go to the Brother product website, find this product and you will get step-by-step instructions. The software is easy to use and has a lot more features than my old larger scanner. Contrary to what one review said, multiple pages do get placed into one document. I suspect his problem was user error. If your thing is document scanning (not photos) this is a good choice. It is also portable. One thing, one of the optional programs you have to pay for to use. The website doesn’t say this. It is the pdf program. I am not sure what it does- anything that you save with this scanner can be saved in pdf as well as other formats.

Great Scanner, but includes a scam

Everything about this scanner is 5 star, so why did I give it only 4? They included, in the download, a pdf reader that I assumed was included. As soon as I installed the reader, I was notified that it is free for 15 days only, so I uninstalled the reader. I bought a scanner and was not notified that some of what I got was not free. The scanner is really fast and takes up minimal desk space. It is also easy to install and use. The included software is much easier to use than the HP crap that I had been using.

    Love it

I’ve been scanning old documents and magazines that I want to save, it’s perfect. Setup is a little weird, but once you get that figured out there are no issues. I love the two-sided scanning, makes everything fast and simple.

    More trouble than it’s worth

We bought this to digitize our family paperwork. I’m on day one and would not recommend this product to anyone.Issue #1: The ADS-1200 does not have bluetooth capabilities. FYI. We should have read the product description more closely.Issue #2: Since you can’t do bluetooth you have to rely on the USB cable and it is extremely short – fine for sitting at a desk, not fine for anywhere else.Issue #3: The install process is more complex than you’d expect and the instructions aren’t clear. There are 3 drivers you have to install and the manual instructions aren’t very clear on any of them. The website UI is lacking.Issue #4: Once we got to a point where it was working, it was not working well. It has a hard time reading single sheets of paper. I’ve got a stack of about 200 sheets to go through and it takes about 5 attempts for single-sheet pages for the scanner to recognize that there’s a piece of paper in the tray. Incredibly time-consuming and I’m not looking forward to the project ahead of me.Issue #5: When it finally reads those single sheets, it pulls them in crooked and then you need to do the scan over again to catch all the information correctly.Seriously do not get this thing. The only reason I’m still using it is that I’m too lazy to return it and risk the same issues with another brand.I’m only giving it a 2 star instead of 1 because eventually it does work, although it makes me want to pull my hair out.

Stopped Working in Less than One Year

Set up, configuration and speed were great at first. I used it sporadically – when needed – and for normal usage, mainly to scan receipts and documents. It suddenly slowed to a crawl and then stopped altogether. I tried troubleshooting and following the instructions on the Brother website but it’s not worth the money. In all honesty, it was great when it was working but it died out very quickly. Sad.

    Such a timesaver!

I often have thick packets to scan – 30-50 pages is not uncommon. Often those are mixed single- and double-sided prints. This little machine rockets through them. My printer scanner is super slow and does not handle duplexed images; those have to be hand scanned. The scanner software is easy to use. It offers the ability to set up multiple pre-sets if you want them. I don’t need them, but I did play with them and I can see the convenience if you do a lot of different scanning (written documents, photos, etc.). Definitely worth the money.

IT DOESN’T WORK LIKE A SCANNER SHOULD

Don’t BUY UNLESS YOU WANT A WHOLE BUNCH OF PROBLEMS. IT IS NOT EASY TO SET UP. THERE ARE NO PROMPTS TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO NEXT. IT MAKES MY BROTHER PRINTER THE DEFAULT INSTEAD OF THE BROTHER SCANNER ADS-1200; DIRECTIONS ARE LACKING; MUST OPEN THE SCANNER PORT MANUALLY TO SELECT SCAN, BUT FIRST PRESS THE X BUTTON TO CLEAR ANY PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS TO SCAN; THEN SCAN FROM THE COMPUTER. THERE ARE LOTS OF ERROR MESSAGES SAYING THE DOCUMENT DIDN’T SCAN, THEN YOU NEED TO TRY AGAIN, NOT FORGETTING TO PRESS THE X BUTTON, THEN YOU TRY TO SAVE IT TO A SPECIFIC LOCATION, AND IT WON’T SAVE. MANUAL DOES NOT PROVIDE DIRECTIONS OF ANY KIND ON SET UP.

Horrible scanner for small business use

    1. The directions included with the product don’t tell you HOW to use it. They tell you how to plug it in. I had to fumble through the program I had to download to guess on using it.2. It doesn’t scan receipts. If I have 1 normal width page, it won’t “detect” it. I have to hold it pushed into the scanner then push the button on the computer program to start scanning. It wouldn’t scan my receipts even when pushed down. For the record, the directions also did not tell me that pages had to be facing backward.3. When scanning, you can’t keep placing documents and have it keep scanning. If you place some documents, once those are done, you have to click a button on the computer to have it start scanning again. This is irritating when you have receipts or different sized documents or paper types that you don’t want to stack and have jams. Because then you have to click a button between every page.4. It said it included software for pdfs but the download only installed a trial version. I had to go to my products support page online to find the complete version. None of that was specificied, I just so happened to find it.5. It scans fast. But don’t stack too many pages at once. It can only handle a few documents in the adf at a time. It sucks them in from the last page to the first. With perfect non bent pages, it was pulling them 3 at a time or more so I had to reduce the number of pages per stack. Then I still had to go back and forth to the computer to click to start scanning. All in all, too much work for the money, especially with not scanning receipts.

Not user friendly – nothing in it is

Bought it. Set it up.As a test I scanned one document at resolution 300. It came out not in reprint quality.OK. I changed resolution to 600. Now it asks me for the dimensions of the document that I intend to scan. Now I probably have to carry a measuring tape with me and measure every document I scan because automatic size doesn’t work.OK. I thought let’s see the User Guide.Everything that came with the item was Quick Start guide and a few other inserts. In the quick guide there are multiple languages but there is no table of contents. So you don’t know if the section in English is only one. And why would someone assume that can be more than one?Ah! That is because there are buttons on the device there is no description anywhere in the guide what those buttons do and when do I press them. It is not really a user manual, is it?A Quick Start it says. But where is the full manual? It is non-existent.It is going back because it is unreasonable to offer all the bells and whistles – improving edges, higher resolution scan, etc – only to those who measure their documents.

Easy to Use Compact Duplex Scanner

This Brother scanner is a not a flatbed. The model I got allows one pass full duplex scanning of multiple pages. There is a cheaper single page model and a more expensive wireless model. It does NOT come with software. You must go to the provided URL to download and install it. Installation and setup was easy. It works exactly as described. You need an available USB port to connect to your PC. You can save your scans on your PC or network, or even to a USB flash drive on the available data port. My only complaint is that there is no slide out extension to hold pages for feeding the scanner. This is a minor issue. This device is fast, easy to use, and produces quality images or PDFs. It does have include app software – I like the Kofax Power PDF Standard. It also has a very small footprint. It packs a lot of power in a small device.

    Not for regular daily use

I’ve had the scanner since August of this year and I have to keep cleaning the roller with every use because at least streaks on the scans now. I use this scanner on an almost daily basis and scan anywhere between 200 and 400 pages a day, so it looks like I need to get something with more capacity, because I can’t keep stomping in the middle of my scans to clean the roller and then scan more documents

    Cumbersome time consuming driver download

Seems like a nice machine, but I’ve spent 1.5 hours to download drivers. Tried to download free receipt software and it won’t finish because it says the sword doesn’t meet criteria, but it dies. Nothing worked so I gave up. Thought I was done and then it said some software was outdated and needs to be updated ugh! I haven’t even tried scanning yet.

ADS-1200 – Very Fast Photo and Double Sided Sheet Printing

The media could not be loaded.

This review is for the ADS-1200 ONLY. Many of the reviews I’ve read are for identical looking machines, but different model numbers and the reviews are quite misleading.Pros: Once it’s set up and working it’s stupidly fast at scanning a stack of photos to your computer as individual .jpegs instead of one huge .pdf. Double sided sheet printing is just as quick and accuracy is excellent. It does come with the necessary USB cable to hook it up to your Windows, MAC or Linux computer. The unit is very small and compact, easily moved and fits in convenient places for use. The scan to USB feature works as advertised, but by default saves all scans as one .pdf.Cons: No Wi-Fi. The ADS-1200 is either scan to thumbdrive or use the provided USB cord to your computer. The software to adjust your preferences is available for download from the Brother website as is the manual. Not much useful information comes in the box. The Windows software setup from Brother’s website took 45 minutes to finish on Windows 10. Drivers download and install on Mint Linux 21 took 45 seconds, but you have to hunt around for the Linux driver on Brothers website. Another problem is the manual makes no mention of Linux drivers and also often refers to a Model ADS-1700, which has a digital screen on it for settings. The ADS-1200 must have software installed on your computer in order to set your preferences or make adjustments for your media. All said I’m very pleased with the performance and convenience of the ADS-1200 and hope it lasts through the multiple photo albums I need to digitize.

    Worked well this far

I bought this because it was 30% cheaper than a Fujitsu with seemingly similar features. This far is a great decision.I have used Fujitsu for over eight years and am quite satisfied. I needed another one as I’m going to graduate school in another city. The price of Fujitsu was a deal breaker.I have owned a Brother printer for a few years and that gave me the confidence to try their other products. This scanner has the robustness and quickness that you expect from a scanner.

used it with a USB thumbdrive, dirt simple and easy!

I bought this for an archival project; cleaning out the wife’s parents’ house and had boxes and boxes and boxes of pictures and documents that needed scanning. I was not looking forward to clicking a mouse the (literally) thousands of times it was going to require to run a scanner application on a laptop while going through these boxes. This scanner lets you run it without connecting to a computer! Insert a blank thumbdrive in the back, place the picture on the tray (face down and upside down / top first), and hit the scan button. It scans both sides of the picture including the writing on the back and stores it on the thumbdrive as a PDF. Every PDF file name has a 5 or 6 digit counter, so there’s no typing filenames and there’s no clicking of a mouse a dozen times. It figures out the edges and crops the scan properly all on its own! If the back of the picture is blank, it makes a 1-page PDF; if it has writing, it’s a 2-page PDF.This past weekend my wife and I took this scanner to her parents’ house and we set up a sort of assembly line in the garage with all the boxes, and this scanner, and she and I scanned over 4000 pictures and documents in an afternoon! Insert, scan, next pic. Insert, scan, next pic. I stopped after a dozen, and put the thumbdrive in the computer to see if it was going OK, and the PDF scans looked PERFECT! So we did the rest.Later I used the “convert” utility from ImageMagick to extract JPGs from all the PDFs, and they were great quality. It’s nice to have those thousands of pictures archived for all time. The scanner worked perfectly!

Works Great with My M1 MacBook Air

For many years, I used an Epson v500 flatbed photo scanner, but when I got the M1 MacBook Air a year ago, it wouldn’t work natively with the current macOS since Epson hasn’t made M1 drivers for this scanner (and apparently never will). Fortunately, I have the software program VueScan which allowed me to work around the lack of M1 drivers, but it was a pain.I’ve been using a Brother monochrome printer for many years, so I took a chance on this Brother scanner, and it’s flippin’ great! I went to the Brother website, and downloaded (and installed) the ICA scanner driver, but for some reason that only sorta worked, so I also downloaded (and installed) the TWAIN scanner driver, and the scanner works great now. While I can scan using Apple’s Preview app (in Preview’s File menu, there’s a menu item “Import from ADS-1200”), the VueScan app is much better. So far I’ve scanned about a half dozen documents, some multiple pages. You can feed a small stack of documents into the feeder. On a couple of the documents, there was some skewing, but generally it’s slight. I have not scanned any photos. The only irritation I have with the scanner is that I diligently researched to see if the scanner included a USB A-to-USB 3.0 A (for connecting to the “Micro USB 2.0/3.0” port). What I saw, including pictures of the box, did not indicate that a cable was included, so I bought one. Upon opening the box, there was one, so now I have two. 🙁 The good thing about using a USB 3.0 A cable is that it gets power via the cable, so you don’t need to use the included AC adapter.

Easy to Set Up – No Foolishness

Super easy set up. Just go to the weblink (with your product), download the proper drivers and get to scanning. Alternatively, don’t download the product driver and you can still scan by using this Brother product as a stand alone scanner. This item scans both sides of the paper without you having to do a manual flip. I had a Neat brand hand scanner for years, but this Brother product has me sold. My main problem with Neat is that they constantly date-out their products. They then nickle and dime you to buy the latest edition of the same exact physical item with *new* supported software. It’s going to be Brother scanners from now on. No hassles & no more of Neat’s slight of hand garbage.

Wonderful Product but shipped in Styrofoam

Love this product. So compact and easy to store. Works great with a memory stick and scans both sides automatically. Does multiple pages which is a big time saver. I wish I could give it 5 stars. I cannot because it ships in plastic bags and big junks of styrofoam. There are so many recycled paper alternatives for shipping. Styrofoam and plastic ends up in our oceans. Let’s protect our planet. Please take the pledge Brother! Then I can buy more of your fabulous products!

Overall a solid machine like any other Brother products. Double sided scan is done at once and very fast!Just to happen that my printer broke down and an new all in one hp printer with feeder scanner is cheaper than this stand alone Brother scanner. But will look into a all in one Brother Printer down the road! Also, Easy return at Whole food! Definitely a plus!

    Honest Review, software and machine

I read the reviews thinking 🤔 idk if I’ll be able to figure it out. The brother software wasn’t immediately obvious but once I found it no problems. There is 2 softwares. 1 for scanning and 1 for receipt organization. The receipt one needs an update and someone techy could figure it out. But the scanning software was very user friendly. Now to the machine. WOW! Super fast, scans both sides in 1 go. I occasionally forget to switch the lever from scanning business cards and documents but other than that amazing. I was able to scan not normal length documents such as CC statements without hesitation. If what you need is a good little scanner that you don’t mind plugging into the computer (its not wireless), you will very much enjoy it.Shoot I’ve been taking it to work with me and scanning my stuff there too. I feel organizated. Its only like 4 lbs, goes wherever you need.My only wish was it wasn’t quite so expensive, but I figured peace of mind was worth it.

    Finally Got It To Work

I tried for two hours to set this up to work with my MacBook. Neither of the drivers (TWAIN/ICA) worked. I will try again this afternoon when I have more time.Update: Finally got it to work by opening System Preference and clicking on Printers and Scanners. There it was. Scanned a document and it came out nice. It also gives the option of how you want to save a document, which is a plus. I save mine as PDF files and then I can send them to people as attachments, instead of faxing them.

good but needs a little work to set up right

Small and compact, this is great for home or portable use. Easy to use once you figure out how to set it up. Scans pretty quickly. The default configuration is to produce jpg’s, which probably is not ideal for most folks… custom configuration is required to make it scan pdf’s from the front panel push button. Page alignment using the auto-feeder isn’t great with the given paper guides, I sometimes need to use my hand to guide paper in to prevent them from getting scanned at an angle. As others have mentioned, the Mac software install is not straight-forward.

    A BROTHER worthy of family

I just love my new little Brother! My real brother gave me another manufacturer – and it gave me trouble right from the start – Unfortunately it was out of warranty – he had purchased it for his business and didn’t like it. So it sat in a corner of his office and when I mentioned that my big HP printer had such a slow scanner – he offered me his. Well, it worked for one day – and that was it – errors galore! So I was encouraged to buy a Brother. He was right – it is super. I even got it on sale! It was easy to set up (I am not tech literate) and it works great. I would buy it again.

A nice little scanner that does the job.

This scanner is ideal for those who need to scan items on a regular, but not production, basis. It does the job well. It is easy to use. The instructions, however, are not as detailed. I had to download the manual to get info on some of the details of the operation I have not scanned multiple page documents, but for single sheets, it is fine. Yo can save the output in a number of formats and I am please with it.

    Works great, engineering marvel

I’m thoroughly impressed how well this scanner works, considering how compact it is. It makes multi-page duplex color scans easily and quickly, discarding blank pages. I have exclusively used the USB flash drive option, and it’s incredibly simple to use. The only issue — most of the scans have been as good as my large desktop scanner, but occasionally the first page will be a bit skewed. So far, every single page has been completely legible, though (nothing has been cropped).

You get what you pay for

Setting it up to me was rather difficult and took some time to set up. I was trying to scan a long item of paper like a 2 foot receipt and it would jam after so long, the scanner was not jammed as I was telling to ensure proper delivery on about 10 attempts and at the same time. You also have to hook it up to a computer to get live pictures. Scanner quality is mehh. Scanning 20 papers. Good luck. You never know what order this thing is gonna scan from or how many papers. You get scat you pay for. For a basic 1 paper scanner, here you go. Multi use, step it up to something else

    Should have read the reviews!

I suppose it’s my fault because I ordered this hastily, seeing that most of the numbers were good. I thought I was getting a scanner that would work wirelessly– this one doesn’t and requires a USB cable to connect to a computer. But the most disturbing thing of all is that if you scan a multiple-page document, which nearly all of my documents are– they are saved as individual files. That makes emailing them incredibly annoying for both the sender and receiver. It really is a major problem. I tried to see if there was some setting that could correct this and combine them, but I could not find one. It’s so bad that I want to return the scanner, but I suppose it’s my fault that I didn’t read too carefully.

    Driver Download Instructions Needs Clarity

Just like the other reviews, the download and operating instructions aren’t obvious or specific. Once on the Brother website, I was able to download the driver to my Macbook Pro on the first attempt…however…I needed to read the instructions several times before proceeding. The link to download the driver for the 1200 was listed in the EUR(European) column…not the US. After downloading the driver and app…everything else was straight forward. I tested the product and the outcome was legit. Fast and precise. You need to fiddle around with the settings, but it’s straight forward. The instruction manual that came with the unit is useless. Don’t even read it…just go to the website.

Easy to Install and works great. Many commenters about installation difficulties – I was lucky because I read Bob in Bama’s comment from Jan 4, 2022. Waste of money

I waited for too long and now I can’t return this awful scanner. It was scanning all my pages crooked, with the edges visible in the scan, and YES, I had ‘anti-skew’ selected, as is the default. It made no difference. I assumed I could fix this if I persisted, so every so often I’d try again, and finally came to the realization that there is nothing I can do to make it scan the pages perfectly vertical. On top of that, it frequently pulls in two pages at once. For ever three stacks of paper I scan, I would have to redo the whole stack because it skipped one or more pages. So it became clear this scanner won’t work for me, and I wasted nearly two hundred dollars. So I bought a Fujitsu Scan Snap ix1600, one of the more expensive scanners, because I didn’t want something only half as awful, I wanted something good, and indeed it’s great. It reads the pages very fast, never pulls more than one page at a time, and every page is scanned in a perfectly vertical fashion, and or course the software that comes with it is a lot more robust, as to be expected for nearly twice the cost.If you’re legally required to make copies and quality is an afterthought, maybe this cheapo scanner is OK, but if quality actually matters, don’t waste your time with this, or any similarly cheap scanner, I would imagine.

Scan to USB drive works out of the box

I was able to scan to a USB drive immediately after plugging it in with no configuration changes. This is my main use case. The paper was not as straight as I would hope, but that might be user error.Scanning was very fast, and dual sided (there’s a scanner on each side).Overall excellent

    Stopped Feeding Under 1 Year

Since April ’23, when purchased, have barely scanned about 30 pages of hard-copy statements and it has suddenly stopped feeding. Barely used, no obstructions, rollers are clean. Tried on several different computers (all Mac). Now a very expensive paper weight.

    Great Scanner

I love this scanner! I work out of my truck and this is so convenient for scanning daily paperwork. Scans with no issues and my office has reports timely. Would definitely get a longer usb cord but other than that when I need another I will buy again.

    What a Beast!

Where to start, 26 years in IT, big business to home. This brother mini can scan at least 20 pages per minute; USB 3 meaning 1000 MB/1GB; 1 pass and both sides scanned (no scan > redirect> flip > etc,); saves to cloud or click 1-quick select-button and saves to PC or NAS; the cost was $499.00 marked down including taxes shipping and cracking the box little over 200 beans; can easily run a small business 20 employees with smartest lady or gentleman running the shared resource; the scanner is by far the best thing I’ve seen since our last President and my bank account three years ago! I’m totally blessed to be a Amazon Junkie and dang proud of it. I can go to Wally World as my cop brother says, less than a buggy full and a paycheck is gone at least $400 dollars and a 1/3 of the buggy is empty. Freebies from tax payers to those bad a$$ tax payers Wally World is worth my drive and 10.00 bucks for gas before I hit the auto open door. They’re all getting filthy rich especially when we need them. If I could get Amazon to cut a better deal for water I’d never leave the house. I.e. Amazon packed water. 16oz-40 pack 5.00 bucks. I’d pay the extra 2.00 bucks so I didn’t have to drive!God Bless America! And my Brother’s!!!!Ernest SwindleAmazon all day long!

    Easy to use

Set up wasn’t as easy as I would like but this is a great product. No wifi necessary once you have the app downloaded which I love. It’s best to do a few pages at a time because they can get crooked easily and need to be rescanned. Let me know if you found this helpful!

YEP, does what it claims too!

This product does exactly what it claims to do, it was easy to set up on the computer, easy to scan documents on to the computer and easy to save once scanned. Very user friendly, my not so tech savvy mother could probably use this if she ever had anything to scan, but being that she barely knows how to email I don’t think that she will be scanning anything in the near future. This unit would probably not be able to handle documents with lots of pages being that it is not a commercial unit. One nice thing is that it does fed from the bottom when the pages are inserted, that way the pages are in the correct order.

Nicely compact, gets the job done

We actually used the higher wi-fi version of this scanner in my volunteer work last year. The wi-fi is a little more complicated to set up, so I went with this (USB cable) version.I like that it’s small and super compact. The paper feed tray folds down so it’s easily transported. It does up to 20 sheets at a time, and does duplex scanning in one pass. The software takes a bit of time to download but is pretty easy to figure out.It even has a really odd but useful card scanning feature. We used this for driver’s licenses in my volunteer work and it worked great…as long as you remember to flip the feed choice switch back and forth. Keep things away from the back of the scanner if this feature is used, as the card tray needs a bit of clearance. The only complaint I have is that the included USB cable was really short for my usage (about 24 inches). I bought a USB extension cable so I could move the scanner farther from my computer, which sits on the floor. My sister bought one of these as well and simply bought a longer USB cable that has the correct fitting.

    Not For Me

This scanner was not what I expected. It was short with instructions. I suppose that if I were more technically literate it would have been O.K. but with scant instructions, it just did not all make sense to me.

This little guy is a speed demon! So fast, so small, and 2-sided? Yup.

So surprised at how fast this little guy is. I previously used an HP multi-function ink-jet printer/scanner until it died. Recently bought an amazing Canon printer so needed a simple scanner. Setup was a piece of cake — just plug it in and downloaded their scanning app. Didn’t even know it did two-sided scanning, what a bonus. The only detraction (albeit a tiny one) was that it would not let me cut/paste filenames before saving in the dialog box — I like to name files clearly (i.e. long file names), and sequentially (like Part 1, Part 2, etc.) and in order to do it quickly I had to do it in the Mac Finder after scanning. No way was I typing each filename individually again. Anyway, only used it once but based on first impressions, it’s a tiny powerhouse for a small amount of $$$.

    Scans clear documents

While I can’t speak to how it installs on your laptop, (using an employer provided laptop that doest premit unapproved software); I can say that scanner provides clear scans to a flash drive that you insert to a USB port in the back of the device. Each document scans into a workable PDF doc.Once scanned you can take the flash drive to any computer to view the documents, save or share with others. The only problem I have with the scanner is that you have to pot the pages in reverse order to scan as it pulls pages from the back through the scanning device. It’s just an extra step in the process but at least you don’t have to feed the pages one at a time. The device is compact and portable so you can take it from job site to job site and save a few trees along the way..

I bought this about a year ago and it worked great for what I needed. I bought a new laptop that has windows 11 and this product is not compatible. I called brother and they said there were no plans to update. this is a fairly expensive product to not be compatible with the newest OS.

    A document-scanning powerhouse!

If you scan a lot of documents, this is the scanner for you! Single- or double-sided; color, grayscale, or black-and-white; high-res or low-res; even extra-long documents; this little gadget does it all! The included scanning software is dead simple to use as well. The price is pretty steep, but it’s honestly worth it for how convenient it makes digitizing all your paperwork.

Pretty good scanner. Too early to tell of its performance but its doing great.

I bought this scanner in order to make up for the inconvenience of using my older huge HP-Officejet Pro 8600 All-In-One printer. Its been a great scanner no question about it. But turning it on, waiting for it to warm up, and much of the time turning on my desktop computer, can have its drawbacks. I wanted something that I could connect to my laptop and quickly scan other documents, receipt, etc. I had been ‘eyeing’ many of these portable scanners via Amazon, most of which had these great reviews. After too much searching did I finally come down to this one which seemed to be the winner of cost and features. Despite the fact that the stupid mailman threw the package over my 7-foot fence and landed on the lawn, this Brother ADS-1200 seems to have worked okay. I am very happy with it and I am very impressed with its convenience and use. Although the Officejet Pro 8600 is still capable of scanning certain types of thicker media this smaller scanner will never be able to, it is the smaller receipts that this little one will not be beat. That older 8600 has already scanned thousands of items, it is time to give it a break. I am still on the early stages of using this smaller device, I am still learning from it. I mostly use it to scan smaller receipts which do come by the numbers. It will not scan narrow and excessively long receipts which I occasionally do get. These types of longer ones will get jammed and I usually cut them in half or so before I use several utility programs on my laptop to tailor them into a digital 8½ x 11 sheet. Everything so far went well. Some times you will get a lop-sided receipt but I found this freely downloadable Libre Office program having a feature to straighten them up. Although I have read a number of complaints from people buying this ADS-1200, to me I have found none. Interface software was a breeze to install. Again I am still on the learning phase of using this little beast and I will leave updates if necessary. One of things that left me breathless is how fast it scans small stacks of paper. It beats the 8600 Office Jet Pro hands down. Again – still too many features to use and explore. But so far it has been a life saver. Very, very happy with it. I am so glad I bought it.

    Won’t handle long receipts

After 8 months of using this machine, here is my review:Pros: The software is easy to use. It is compact. Images scan nicely. Two sided scanning in one pass is nice. Now for the bad stuff: It will not scan long receipts. Receipt scanning is why I bought it, for tax purposes. The little bars that are supposed to keep the paper in alignment will not stay up at all. I have taped then up and still it doesn’t always work. I also have to use a ruler as a weight to keep them upright. Lots of times it takes more than one receipt at a time. It will do receipts up to about 13-14″ long. Publix receipts are a no go. It then stops and says jammed. It is very frustrating. I am a brother fan which is why I bought this one.

This bad boy is a workhorse

I’ve had this over a year now. I needed a scanner that was portable, and this seemed like the best one for the money. After using it for over a year, I can say it was worth every penny!First, when plugged in, this thing is FAST! I don’t know the actual speed, but throw a bunch of papers in and they’re scanned in a blink of an eye. When it’s not plugged in, it’s not that fast, but acceptable. You can scan to a thumbdrive, to your tablet or laptop, or to your desktop. If you don’t like putting 1000 pages at once in the scanner (or whatever it holds), because you’re afraid it’ll jam in the middle, no problem. You can scan a batch and then click continue scanning to add more to the same document.Scans in b&w or color. And you can scan to any resolution. As for OCR, it does it, but I don’t use that.If you scan right from the scanner (not using desktop computer utility), it’ll default to 2 sided copying. I prefer to use the easy to use Brother utility. That’s it. I highly recommend it. Only downside is it is not a flatbed scanner for those few times you want to scan a book or something.

    Handy Portable Scanner with Autofeed

Because I routinely meet with clients outside of my office, this portable scanner saves me both time and postage. The full duplex scanner with autofeed allows me to quickly scan my client’s documents to my laptop. I also appreciate that it can be powered with the supplied USB cable. NOTE: the unit is inexplicably programmed out of the box to scan documents in PNG format and to save each page individually. Fortunately, the included iPrint&Scan software allowed me to re-configure the default settings. Now I can scan multi-page documents to save to one file and it PDF format. The software permits you to save these settings, so you don’t have to re-configure the settings each time you power up the scanner. While this scanner is portable, I wouldn’t call it compact. It’s size makes it nearly impossible to fit inside a standard laptop case/bag. Because of its light weight, it’s not a problem to haul around.Three months into is setup and use, I am satisfied with its performance. This way, I don’t have to take documents back to my office, scan them, and return them to my clients. I would definitely recommend this unit for professionals that want to save both time and money. NOTE: Too many documents in the autofeed will cause it to jam, but I rarely have that problem.

Poor Design and bloated broken software

My recomendation is use the hardware without wasting time on installing the software and install the free scanning software NAPS2. NAPS 2 is a tiny program and very easy in every way.1) I rate this scanner as Poor because when you insert the 8.5×11 paper for scanning the guides fall down easily and so setting them up is a pain for every page you want to scan. I ended up with taping the edges to hold the paper properly before scanning. 2) Now about bloated software, I tried installing in the standard option and the installation didnot complete at all. So I restarted installing with custom installation. Custom Installation allows you to install 2 softwares and the PDF software hangs up and never finishes installation after hours of waiting.3) When cancelling the installation and try to scan, the scanning is not standard and my standard usual scanning is Top to bottom. But Brother scans bottom to top and so I have to rotate it each time after scanning.4) I tried to delete the software and it is impossible to delete the files unless you run the command prompt in Adminstrator mode.I just needed to scan a document on a urgency and so I downloaded NAPS2 software (Not Another PDF scanner) and scanned in seconds with standard scanning top to bottom.I will use the hardware but no Brother software

    Works great, tested on Ubuntu

Works really well, the card scanning process wasn’t super intuitive but it scans front and back of a card in one go. It doesn’t bend the cards but does have warning in manual it could scratch them and the feeder and return slot are sizes just for business cards so for anything bigger would need to use a transparent “feeder” page to wrap around it (also mentioned in manual but not included, not problem for me but saw some questions about it).Used brother support site (search was broken, but got to drivers page for the scanner) to find drivers for Linux after installing em and unplugging/replugging the “document scanner” program saw the scanner and works without a hitch. Scanner is fast in low dpi mode and totally acceptable speed at 1200 dpi.Picked this up for a buddy in school to get written homework submitted without battling phone apps and slow process. Think it will serve that purpose very well. Was a bit pricey but think worth the cost, time will tell but have had good experiences with brother stuff in the past.

Pristine pages work great, folded or stapled…keep looking

I’ve had this scanner for some time now. If the pages are flat/never folded or stapled, it works great. Single page scans have never been a problem. The problem comes in when I try to scan several pages in one go when they’ve ever been stapled, or folded to be mailed or stored. When I try to scan several pages like these, the first page may go through, perhaps the 2nd, but then several pages will go through at the same time. If I want them all in the same file, need to start again.I had an 8-page, single sided document I needed to scan that had been folded to put in a business size letter envelope and mailed to me. It took 6 times to get the individual pages to all go through instead of clumped together. Very frustrating. It isn’t an expensive scanner, but it is a scanner, and feeding a stack of pages, whether they’d ever been folded or not, isn’t a lot to expect.

    I’m still learning

Fast. I love the PDF software because it’s free instead of the expensive Adobe. The sheet guides aren’t tall enough, so I’m forever trying to keep the sheets straight going in. I failed at using this as a mobile scanner, but it’s replacing my Xerox scanner because it’s faster and smaller.
