fails to power Dragonfly v1.2 from iPhone SE (as others have reported)
Failed to read others comments on the iphone reporting that it is unable to power the 1.2 DAC before I bought one. My bad.iPhone SE fails to power the DAC even if no headphone is attached and the phone is on a Qi wireless charger. I am sure it will work on the more recent versions of the DAC that operate at lower voltages.Probably a good product, just does not work for my combination of phone & device.

Drawing? Nah
This is a unique product and I enjoy its capabilities, allowing IOS users to access USBs and other electronics through their smart devices. But this product I bought I could not use for my intended purpose, though it is an official female usb to lightning cable adapter from Apple.I am an artist who is in search of digital art convenience. I used my IPhone 7 and this cable and connected it to my Wacom Intuos and my UGEE M708 Drawing Tablet. My Wacom popped up with “accessory requires too much power” but my Ugee worked. With my Ugee, there was quite a bit of lag. I used Autodesk Sketchbook, MediBang and IbisPaint X. From what I recall It worked with all programs but it lagged incredibly.

It’s a cable. Need it, buy it.
It’s a stock Apple cable with a very specific purpose. If you need it, just buy it. I use it to connect my Earman Eagle DAC to my iPhone 11 max. It does a fine job.

Bought this to connect my GoPro Hero 9 to my iPhone and it’s the only cable recommended by GoPro to work. It’s expensive — much more so than other manufacturers’ equivalents — but it works.

Great product but man it’s overpriced.
This thing works wonders. You can plug countless things into your phone or iPad with this and they will work (I use mine for a dragonfly and an audio interface mainly). The problem comes to durability, just like many other apple cables and accessories. The price would absolutely be worth it if I only needed to buy one, or even one a year. But with consistent use you will find yourself buying on of these ever 1-2 months, which is just ridiculous. For this lack of durability, they should be half the price they are now, or apple needs to make the cable last longer somehow.5 stars on Amazon handling and delivery, problems lie solely with apple

doesn’t seem to work with most thumb drives
I tested this dongle (pictured) on an original iPad Pro and an iPhone XR. *tl/dr:* Most thumb drives I tried did not work, causing the “this device uses too much power” dialog. Seriously, both devices have 8+ hr batteries and they can’t splurge? Why they do not work… It’s not necessarily USB 3 vs USB 2. It did not work with a PNY 32GB USB 3.0 (pictured) nor a Lexar 32GB which is USB 2. It’s not necessarily size. It did not work with the aforementioned 32GB devices, nor a Cruzer Blade 8GB (pictured), nor a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 2GB; almost a relief since smaller sizes are harder to get now.It did work with some promotional USB drive of 1GB size that I had laying around. Also a _128GB_ microSD card plugged into a cheap USB 2 adapter (pictured). These are both USB 2 though so your transfer speed for 3-4MB+ files will probably be slow, and you’ll have to wait till the interface unfreezes after the transfer. I’d try smaller files first to get a sense of how long you’ll have to wait before you try copying over a 60MB PDF.It also doesn’t barf when inserting a Yubikey 5 NFC (though with the XR you can use the NFC function by tapping it to the top of the phone). The Yubikey even has a tiny LED in it, which makes me question how much power other non-LED devices are supposedly using that they’re disqualified. If you have gigabytes of files, you’re looking for another transfer method. If you want the convenience of putting some things on a USB drive because you’re on the go or so you don’t have to plug your phone or what not into someone else’s computer, I’d plan to get this and a 1 GB USB 2 thumbdrive (ok, a pack of ten). Or find a cheap adapter to pair with a microSD card of better reputation.

Works as advertised – BUT you must understand it’s NUMERROUS limitations!
I bought the latest revision of the “Lightning to USB CAMERA Adapter”. (MD821AM/A)This product works as designed – to connect the ipad to:- a camera with a built-in USB port.- In addition, that camera must use the DCIM folder system.- Finally, your IPAD must have OS 9.2 or higherIF all of these conditions are met, it will transfer pictures from the camera to your ipad. BUT it will NOT work with any other USB product!!SO… PLEASE NOTE: NEW APPLE PRODUCT: “Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter”The old apple cable has been superseded by a new model (which is only on apple.com), the “Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter”The new model has a “power pass-thru”, which allows you to use USB items that need more power, like a USB memory stick – and many other things. It still will not work with every USB device – due to apple’s OS software, but it is a HUGE improvement over the old model. It also supports USB 3.0, but ONLY on the IPAD PRO!!! (read more below)See the apple webpage: […]Product OverviewWith the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, it’s easy to transfer photos and videos from your high-resolution digital camera to your iPad Pro.After you connect the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, your iPad Pro automatically opens the Photos app, which lets you choose photos and videos to import, then organizes them into albums.Add even greater capability and versatility to your iPad Pro by powering the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter with a USB Power Adapter. Then you can connect USB peripherals like hubs, Ethernet adapters, audio/MIDI interfaces, and card readers for CompactFlash, SD, microSD, and more. (Note: There are only a handful of USB devices that have been tested by Apple and confirmed to work!)The Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW, along with SD and HD video formats, including H.264 and MPEG-4. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro transfers data at USB 3 speeds, while the 9.7-inch iPad Pro uses USB 2.As you can see from the product description above, this cable is designed for the iPad Pro.I have an “iPad Air 2”, and I plan on testing this new cable, but I have not done so – yet.

Expensive But Still Somewhat Decent USB Adapter For iOS
To Apple’s credit, the questionable performance of this way overpriced adapter is well documented. They’ve actually done their part explaining the power-related behaviors you might encounter. Still, I’m giving it three stars due to the insanely high price combined with the fact that it just doesn’t work very well by itself on my iPad Air 2.On my iPad Air 2 the first two (MIDI) devices I tried to use with this adapter both failed with a message about the Attached Accessory using Too Much Power. A quick visit to the Apple support page suggested the use of an additional powered USB hub, then connecting that hub to the USB jack on the Camera Adapter. Voila! iOS then recognized my MIDI devices perfectly allowing triggering of professional quality music apps such as DM-1 by Fingerlab. This type of MIDI functionality requires that your desired iOS app supports MIDI, so apps like iMaschine by Native Instruments will not work. Most of the mainstream music apps do support MIDI (pianos, synths, and most drum machines). For the more typical usage scenario your USB device might work just fine without needing a powered USB hub, such as typical cameras and flash based storage devices.Lastly I am also somewhat annoyed about the name of this product. Calling it a “camera adapter” is downright confusing to a user base that has all types of different USB devices that can work with iOS. It also seems there is “fragmentation” regarding the performance of this item; older iPads seem to be less finicky about power issues that seem to be a problem on the newer iPads. The underlying message is that Apple is trying to make it as difficult, expensive, and confusing as possible to connect your USB devices to your iPad. All that said, if you can use the workarounds, are able to buy a powered USB hub if needed, and understand the the power issues that might come up this can be a useful item.

This my 4th unit. Each previous one failing after a while, with the last one failing before I could use it. I’m not sure why they are so poorly made. The only reason I am still buying them is because I can’t find anything else that works to connect my iPod to my DAC.

So glad I found this!
I purchased this before a recent trip to Europe so that I would be able to copy or move photos off of my older camera onto my iPad Mini 2. It worked flawlessly and I was then able to post and email pictures from the iPad while I was there instead of waiting until I returned home. It also allowed me to back up my pictures daily in case something happened to my camera or SD card. I debated between getting this, getting a non-OEM card reader only for the iPad, and getting and setting up a card reader for my Android phone. I think this was the easiest and simplest solution and it adds other functionality besides just reading SD cards to my iPad (although I haven’t used it for anything else yet). I understand that there may issues with longer file names (and maybe with other devices), but I had no problems at all with my camera. My only reason for docking a star is the price. As with most things Apple, they charge a premium. But I’m really glad I had it with me.

Won’t power some USB A flash drives
I bought to use for a USB A keyboard which works fine for that. I also tried using a USB A flash drive and got a warning that my iPad was not capable of powering the device. I did not try it with a self powered USB hub to see if that would work. But it is possible that it would? As always any accessory coming from Apple is always over priced in my estimation.

Not durable
Like Apple’s lightning cables, this is not very durable. The cable does not like to get bent. I used this with an audioquest dragonfly dac connected to my iPhone and my earbuds and kept it in my pocket, requiring the cable to bend. Worked great when it worked. Went through two cables in two weeks. First sign of trouble is when you start hearing popping from the earbuds. Then it just goes silent. Works intermittently if you jiggle the cord but alas, it’s broke.

Worthless accessory for camera uploads!
I purchased this Apple Lightning to USB so I could transfer photos from my Canon PowerShot SX/740 HS to my iPad and for my daughter to plug in a microphone to her iPad for Zoom voice lessons. In both instances, we get the same power message as displayed In the example I have shared. This is only usable for photos I have on my iPhone, which makes this part useless! I travel. I like to upload photos from my Canon to my iPad for quick sharing to family or social media when in WiFi.If you are looking to purchase this for similar purposes, don’t! It definitely cannot do what it purports it can unless all you want is to upload your iPhone or other cell phone photos.

Works with iPhone and MIDI devices
I bought this to connect my iPhone with my Akai EWI USB (http://www.amazon.com/Akai-EWI-USB-Professional-Instrument-Controller/dp/B001MTKAD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460536894&sr=8-1&keywords=akai+ewi+usb) midi wind instrument via a Plugable 2 port USB HUB (http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-2-Port-Compact-Splitter-Windows/dp/B005HKIDF2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00) without any external power supply. So the workflow is this: Akai EWI USB -> USB cable -> Plugable USB HUB -> Apple Lighting to USB Camera Adapter -> iPhone 6 (IOS 9.3+)It works like a charm with any midi app, I use SampleTank, for example.I just don’t get whya) this cable is so expensive, and whyb) you cannot have this SKU in Europe? Apple sells the old Lighting to USB Camera adapter there that does not work with iPhone.

Stop buying the others.
I’ve bought 5 other brands and styles of USB/headphone/charge connectors and none work as they should – but this one does. I’m running a midi controller into an iPad Air 2 and not one single note has dropped in several weeks of playing! Buy this one. It works.**UPDATE: I purchased this on May 6th 2020, and it died today Dec 31st, 2021. Didn’t even make the new year! I guess Apple will be getting another $39 from me. Maybe not yet. The usb/charge dongle is only $37 (?) hmm sounds like a scam to me.

Adapter stopped working at 6 weeks.
I contacted Amazon to troubleshoot an error when plugging in this adapter to iPhone. Amazon put me in touch with Apple to try to get it replaced through their one year warranty. I was told by the Apple representative that the warranty was void, because I purchased the item from Amazon, and not directly from Apple.

Works: Rocksmith USB Guitar Cable to iPad Mini 2
I’ve been using a Line6 Pocket Pod for years. I finally got tired of it’s limitations and clumsiness and started looking around for other options. Don’t use with AudioQuest Dragonfly D-to-A convertors
5 stars for camera file transfer functionality; 0 stars for use as a Lightning to USB adapter for use with an AudioQuest Dragonfly digital-to-analog (DAC). My primary reason for buying this adapter was for use with my Dragonfly DAC, which I use with my iPhone 7 for (headphone) audio-playback. The issue is that there are clicks and pops that I hear during playback. A quick call to AudioQuest, and the first question they asked me was about the Lightning to USB adapter I’m using. When I mentioned this one, I was told that’s a known problem – having to do with the chipset Apple uses in this adapter. AudioQuest recommends the Apple Lightning to USB 3.0 model, which also includes a second port that’s Lightning (Female), and can be used to also provide a charge to the iOS device the adapter is plugged into. And that’s where I’m headed right now…

Expensive; but works like a charm
I decided pay more than double the price; but it works like a charm. After market less expensive product issues: I tried few lesser expensive ones; they get hot . I was concerned that devices I connect can potentially be damaged . Not worth saving $12 dollars and taking a chance. After market products have a slew of issues; High resistance in the connector ; either too loose or too tight on the USB side etc.

Not The Most Durable, But Reliable
If you really take care of it and baby it, it can last you a while, but with daily use, especially as an adapter for USB DACs, it will inevitably start to drop out randomly as it is bent at its strain points. I do find taping the strain points with simple electrical tape strengthens the connection a bit, but it looks tacky. However, 3rd party accessories, especially for Apple products, aren’t always the most reliable, so if you need something that will absolutely work with your lightning iOS device, and are willing to work with its fragility, this is the adapter to get. Otherwise, there is no difference buying a third party lighting to USB adapter as long as it works correctly and is MFI/OTG, and some are better built than Apple’s.

The hidden gem of Apple accessories
Kids, this is the real deal. People make fun of Apple and their overpriced dongles, but this thing is magic. No really, I can’t think of another tiny piece of hardware that has so drastically expanded what I can do with a single port. This dongle hides behind the name “Camera Adapter”, as if it were a mere tool for camera enthusiasts. I don’t care about cameras at all, I’ve used this to:- Attach a USB keyboard for use with my iPad Pro- Connect a Blue Yeti USB Microphone to my iPad and record vocals- Attach a USB MIDI Controller which then seamlessly hooks into Garageband’s Synth instruments- Connect to a USB-to-Ethernet hub and download stuff to my iPhone/iPad over Ethernet- Oh, by the way, that hub I mentioned has 3 USB ports on it, I can connect stuff to **all three of them** and download over Ethernet at the same time.- And yeah, maybe I’ll try it out with a camera someday when I’m done rocking out with all these other peripherals… I wonder if I could plug in an Electric-Guitar-to-USB adapter…Anyway, this thing is insane. You might have an awesome iPad, but until you get this, you’re not using it right.Accept no substitutes.

This connector is a joy….
After returning the grey-not-white Omar lightning keyboard, and a used Macally white-but-not-working keyboard (ebay), I decided to see whether I could use one of my white/aluminum-silver mechanical keyboards with my iPad via this connector. It works! And it is awesome to type in full-size-keyboard heaven on mechanical keys (E-Element z-77 from Amazon) to take notes in OneNote, write email, fast-enter into Omnifocus, etc. with complete kinetic comfort!Even better, I have also tested it on iPhone 5s and iPhone 8 Plus – success! It also hooks into an older rubber dome usb keyboard and does fine with all three devices as well. The only issue – and I think this is true across the board – is that when the devices’ battery life drops into the 60% range, they are apt to turn off the keyboard for drawing too much power. I found that if I unplugged and replugged it in, and typed more slowly, I could continue using it into the 50% range at least. I haven’t pushed it further, usually I finished what I was doing and didn’t need to go further (courtesy of faster data entry with a keyboard and touch typing skills).I will be trying a powered hub situation next, and a splitter. For people who need to use electronics, but want a little less EMF/less Bluetooth, having a way to enjoy the functionality of portable iOS devices with some buffer distance, this adaptor plus a keyboard is really nice.

Brand New and already failing at times
This Apple Camera Adapter is being used to connect a Dexibell Vivo H1 Digital Piano, to an iPad Pro (2017 model). The specific Apps are installed, and appear to work well… except frequently, if the iPad is moved in the tiniest of ways, the connection between iPad and Piano (and the apps) fails. I don’t know if it’s just a matter of poor quality (it *is* a Genuine Apple Product), or just how it works…, and/or doesn’t.Though I would recommend it to a Friend, I’d do so, with extreme prejudice, warning them of the small limitation, which could ruim entire recordings. I don’t believe alternate brands would be any better. I’ve had this same kind of problem with other similar devices (lightning adapters, connecting to something else) whose designs are so close to each other, but the results (and design flaws) are the same.

Seamless Instant Easy to Use with Nikon DSLR
Worked perfectly right out of the box. Needed to download photos off my old Nikon D70 to iPad Air 2 instead of to my Macbook. Plugged adapter into iPad and other end accepts Nikon USB camera cable. Open Photos app, Choose “Device” in side menu and voila, there are all the photos currently on the camera. Download speed super fast for largest size JPEGs. Happy! Apple adapter is a little pricey, but I say just go with it instead of risking some other brand that may or may not work.

Despite Lightning connector, only works in one orientation
It appears there is some defect in the adapter I got, which begs the question of whether it’s specific to the one I got or to all of these (or if these are even legit Apple adapters). This one works, but only in one orientation. For some background, you can use all sorts of USB devices with iOS using this “camera adapter”, as long as the devices don’t try to pull too much current. Unfortunately, none of the USB devices will work unless the adapter is plugged in right-side up (with the camera icon on top vs. model information). If you plug in a USB keyboard, for example, it only works when the adapter is plugged in right-side up, causing the on-screen keyboard to disappear as normal. As soon as you flip it upside down, which is still legitimate for a Lightning connector, the on-screen keyboard pops back up because it doesn’t see the keyboard anymore.

Works as advertised!
Before you make this purchase, keep in mind this it was designed and advertised to connect to a CAMERA. If you’re buying this to connect to an unpowered device like a thumb drive or card reader, it WON’T WORK. The lightning port was never really designed to provide the 5 volts most USB devices require. The device you’re adapting to must have its own power source (like a camera has batteries). I’m using it for my J-Lab USB microphone for YouTube using a powered USB hub to provide power to the microphone and it works like a champ! I got both this and a hub for less than $40. Worth it considering what I paid for the microphone.

Limited-use adaptor
This product works with a mouse but not with a thumb drive or other peripherals that I tried. I have not used it as a camera adaptor, so can’t verify whether it will download photos. Most uses require the more expensive lightning adaptor that has an extra slot to connect the device to power while using it. If you only want to buy one adaptor, it would be better to get the powered one, as it is much more versatile.

After attempting to use this product and it not working, I went to the apple store for assistance. They said this adapter was made specifically for certain types of camera devices. I bought it to use as an adapter for my Ipad to my gopro to import pictures but got error messages stating “The attached accessory uses too much power.” After a visit to the apple store they said I need “Lightning to SD card Camera Reader.” That is what I purchased.Unfortunately I was not able to return this product because I waited too long to make my apple appointment and the allowed time elapsed for Amazon returns. This product does work well though! Just make sure you buy it for the correct reason!

Great for keyboards for typing
I wanted to connect a usb a keyboard to my iPad to type stuff. It’s worked really well with an iPad stand. The only thing is that the cheaper keyboards seem to work better. Must have but doesn’t last.
I am disappointed with Apple’s quality control. This is the third lightening to usb camera adapter I had to purchase from Apple through Amazon. You’ll notice I said “had to purchase from Apple”. This was not an accidental use of words. I said it this way because of Apple’s proprietary circuit design. Other brands don’t work. I am using an ifi Hip-DAC to use with my AirPod Pro MAX and this is like I said the third adapter I HAD to purchase. I am not rough on it it just fails.BTW I am on my second lightening to 3.5mm cable. Another proprietary cable you must use if you want your headphones to work correctly.

Nice compact lightning to USB device adapter with some caveats.
So this device works well with USB devices, provided some things are taken into account:* usb3 devices have high drain.. and will not reliably work. If you have a hub between the adapter and the device, it might work since it will bump it down.* powered USB hub works well with USB devices.* only devices iOS supports will work.Things I tried:* USB blue yeti microphone. Worked great straight with the adapter.* transcend usb3 memory card reader: did not work directly. Does work with hub(powered and unpowered)* 1/4″ to USB guitar adapter worked directly and worked well with garage band.* USB flash drives: most did not work directly, all worked with hub. This was used with an iPad Pro 9.7″ and iPad mini.

Used to hook up a wireless usb keyboard.
I purchased one of these to hook up a keyboard to my wife’s iPhone. The screen was not registering touches so I had to use the keyboard to unlock the device. After enabling voiceover (thanks siri) I was able to access the files I needed and was able to email them to her. When you hook up a device that requires too much power, it will let you know on the screen. Although it’s recomended to use a bluetooth keyboard for that, this method worked. The biggest drawback was that I couldnt connect to a PC using this method because you need to be able to press trust this device on your phone screen. This is where the bluetooth keyboard comes in handy.Either way, this worked for what I needed.
