    Impressive sound for its size

Good overall sound with nice low range. As suggested it does even better when placed near a wall to help reflect the audio. I bought a pair and have used the JBL connect feature. I have not been able to get the stereo mode to work right however. Tried with streaming Spotify and Sirius but the audio in stereo kept skipping and strangely sped up the music? But I have been able to simply pair the two speakers together. Not sure if that’s a software glitch or maybe a compatibility issue with the streaming services. In any case not a big deal for me. Happy with the sound, size and portability. Easily pairs with my iPhone. Even paired with a TV that I set up for outdoor viewing when I needed a bit more audio.

So hard to find a charge 4 by JBL since Charge 5 came out…charge 4 is so much better then 5. The upgrades on the new charge 5 did not improve at all..stick to charge 4.. cheaper too !!

Accidentally ordered charge 4 instead of 3

I meant to order the Jbl charge 3 to replace an existing one however didn’t pay attention and ordered the model 4. It’s not very much bigger and the price was similar. Came in sealed packaging well shipped

Solid Design & Great Sound. Highly Recommend

The media could not be loaded.

I was looking at the Charge 5 & Charge 4.The Charge 5 being the new model of course has some upgrades that makes it “better”.But it’s also $180 at the time of this review. And the Charge 4 which REALLY sounds awesome and is loud enough to fill a decent sized room pretty well. Sound is well rounded especially for the cost. Which is currently about $90.Is the Charge 5 worth double the cost? Definitely NOT.. The Charge 4 is built very well and even stands better on surfaces. With the Charge 5 the bottom isn’t sturdy enough in my opinion leaving the speaker more likely to roll/topple over.I pictured the Charge 4 next to my tiny Sony Speaker that I use in the bathroom which goes for about $45 and is no where near as powerful as the Charge 4.If you are looking at both Charge Speakers right now and debating. In my opinion, I do not feel you will be missing much of anything going with the earlier Charge 4 model. And could buy 2 of them & link them together giving yourself 2 Speakers for the price of 1 Charge 5.

    Great sound!

Bought this for my mom. Her computer speakers stopped working so we thought this might be a good solution to meet multiple needs/wants. She loves this speaker! Now she can not only listen to her YouTube videos, but she can also rock out to Supertramp while she washes her dishes too. Whatever it takes to keep clean dishes in the house, right?

Best speaker I’ve ever had, I use it about 8 hours a day and charge it maybe every 2 or 3 days? You can charge your phone off of it too. The sound quality is amazing, great bass while still letting you hear the vocals. It has a pretty strong bluetooth signal too so you can walk to the other side of the house and still be connected

    Very happy with this purchase

Initially, my preference was the Bose Soundlink Mini II with its smooth notes and decent sound quality in a small transportable package; that is, until I heard comparison against a JBL Charge 4 on YouTube. Based on that review and others, I purchased this speaker for its waterproof, multi-connect and sound.Great price: You can buy a Charge 3 direct from JBL for $129 with 12 color options, with price point being on par with Amazon.Sounds great; EXCELLENT better describes it. If you have a Charge 3 there isn’t enough improvement to justify buying a Charge 4. The Charge 4 went from two smaller speakers to one slightly larger speaker which improved bass frequency from 65Hz to a deeper 60Hz. When the JBL arrived we conducted our own comparison against a Bose Soundlink Mini II and – Wow. The Charge 4 is much clearer, has better frequency response and has better sound presence in the room. It’s a bit larger and heavier than the Soundlink Mini II which might turn some off, but to me; if I’m going to carry any speaker like this then I’m taking the same care and am sure I can find just a little more room.Good packaging but NO INSTRUCTIONS?! Not that charging and setup are all that difficult, but this is my first device that requires USB C, first anything that arrived with ZERO printed information, and rechargeable device that arrived with ZERO anything to charge it with. /// Setup was easy. I bought a USB C cable from the nearest gas station and plugged it in for 3 hours since it came somewhat charged already. Once charged, press the Bluetooth button then connect to your phone or other device. For settings, I always recommend phone volume to be no more than 1/2 to 3/4 volume then using the Charge 4 volume from there. This affords you plenty of up/down volume adjustment remotely from your phone and doesn’t task the internal sound processor….this, since it’s cheaper to replace/repair a Charge 4 than an expensive smartphone. You and someone else can be Bluetooth paired to this speaker at the same time.Battery Life: The built-in rechargeable Li-ion 7500mAH battery is strong. Not only does it support up to 20 hours of playtime (at lowest setting, and figure 10 hours at half volume), but it will also charge your phone and other devices via the USB port. I strongly suggest buying a protective case for it which will hold your charger, USB C charging cable AND any spare USB cable needed for cell phones. It has the same IPX7 waterproof as a iPhone, Samsung or other higher end smartphone. We place it on the deck without any worries of accidents from fluid spills, big splashes, being left in the rain, or even an accidental swim in the pool. Having that peace of mind alone is priceless.JBL Connect+: With Connect+ you can connect several of these to together for full sound experience. Put 4 in opposing corners of a large room, in different rooms, indoor and outdoors…heck, even in your car if your current stereo or speakers are crap.Bottom line – this being my FIRST Bluetooth speaker ever, and having friends that have made different choices for the speakers they have, I have zero regrets with my purchase after hearing it beside theirs. Bang for buck is spot on. I have excellent sound in a transportable package in a wireless speaker that is rugged, waterproof and allows multiple speakers as well as people to connect. I now proudly own the party favorite speaker for socials, events and private enjoyment. WIN!

very good, a little boomy, overall better than Flip5: Updated @ 1 year use

UPDATE Aug 2021: After 13 months steady use, I still really like this speaker. It sounds great for a small speaker, and is still my daily driver (heh) for listening to music.BUT… the battery has started getting “odd” after the year mark. Occasionally it starts discharging. Not using it (or even leaving it off) doesn’t help. It goes all the way to empty (blinking the whole while as if charging) before finally charging back up. That makes for a disconcerting “speaker might not work today” effect. When the battery is empty, it won’t play at all (turns off), apparently no circuitry to bypass an empty battery.I swapped charger & cable only to have it recur. The pattern, its irregularity, and its recency tell me the likely culprit is the circuitry that regulates charging. Alas there’s no mechanism for firmware updates. If it doesn’t get any worse, I would still buy another one– it’s been that good. I expect to get at least 2 years use (preferably much more) from a premium bluetooth speaker. I’ll report back if the problem worsens…Orig review follows–This is my daily music speaker. It’s “big” enough to fill a large room by itself, and is well-balanced for music (heavy on the bass). It’s substantial (build), stays reliably connected (bluetooth), seems to charge smartly. If you’re considering their Flip5 instead (and want just one speaker), get this one instead. The Flip5 only preferred if weight is your primary concern.Pros:* Much bigger sound than expected* Visual battery indicator* USB-C charging* Easy bluetooth pairing. Stays paired consistently with my Google Hub* Can pair with multiple sources, no need to clear the last pairing* Solid sound. Situated in the middle-ish, it easily fills the 40-foot wide open-floorplan downstairs of my home* Easily visible controls & charge indicator* Seems to charge intelligently, so it’s no constantly charging, and goes to sleep when not in use.Negatives:* Very boom-y, weak mids, no onboard EQ* No case* On the heavy side if you’re traveling with it* I did not evaluate linking up multiple speakersThe one big caveat is how boomy this speaker is– and it can’t be tuned, you’d have to modify the source output instead. So if your primary use is classical music or human speech, consider other speakers. But for music, I love this one after nearly 4 months heavy use! Highly Recommended.

Returned Charge 5’s and bought these

THE FOLLOWING IS A REVIEW I LEFT FOR THE CHARGE 5 SPEAKERS. THE COMPARISON WITH THE CHARGE 4 IS AT THE UPDATE NEAR THE END OF THE REVIEW!——————-I purchased two of these to work as a stereo pair in my apartment to obtain a nice full sound without having to really crank the volume to have an enjoyable experience and bother the neighbors.Well it all started out great, the white look clean and are small enough to not take up too much visual space. They also sound fantastic for a battery powered speaker, relatively full low end and crisp highs without needing to be EQed. They are setup roughly 15’ feet from one another in opposing corners of my studio space. They add presence and a fullness that I was missing from my Notabrick Bluetooth speakers. Now for THE PROBLEMS:I synced the speakers together and switched them to “stereo” mode from the app with no problem using my iPhone 13 Pro running Bluetooth 5.1. When it was time to connect it to my stationary media hub it was intended for (a 2020 iPad 8th gen) it would only connect one speaker and not allow for a party link or stereo link between the two Charge 5’s anymore. It took my some time of testing and no help from the internet to find out that the Bluetooth 4.2 that the iPad uses means the JBLs could no longer connect in a pair. I figured they had their own connection protocol (perhaps wifi 2.4ghz) for party mode. This shared audio functionality will ONLY work if your device that is sending audio is Bluetooth 5.1.SECOND ISSUE:So I put the iPad aside and would only be using my iPhone for music since that’s the only way I could get the Stereo mode to function. But after 15-30 minutes of music playback the speakers will disconnect themselves from one another requiring you to manually go to them and reconnect themselves. Every third time or so they will also drop the Bluetooth connection requiring you to “forget device” on your phone and resync Bluetooth to your host Charge 5 and then relink the speakers. This is all to say that if you want to use more than one speaker, even using a compatible Bluetooth 5.1 device that they are extremely finicky. Using a single Charge 5 has proved to be very reliable, sound great and look great. I am an audiophile and have many thousands of dollars in pro audio. The current tested Firmware version is 0.8.6.0 and has not been updated for over a year so this is unlikely to be fixed.UPDATE: I purchased two Charge 4 speakers to run through all the same testing and scenarios as the newer Charge 5 Models and found that with the exception of the occasional dropout and auto reconnection (perhaps once every two hours or so) these have solved all my issues. In fact, having the Aux plug on this model has also meant I can plugin my DJ decks to them when we are at the park and the primary speaker that is being plugged into will duplicate the signal and send it to the second speaker wirelessly with no issues. There is about one second of lag with this setup so the use of my DJ headphones is a requirement, but I love the added functionality. I also find the battery meters to be much more easy to read on the Charge 4. Finally, I do not know if it’s because the transmission power of the Bluetooth 4.2 in the Charge 4 over the Bluetooth 5.1 in the Charge 5, but I find that I get a longer transmission range with no dropouts with the older Charge 4 model. On paper this should be backwards but testing 4 independent units in different scenarios have shown this to be recurring findings for me. I have used the 2020 iPad, iPhone 13 pro and Macbook M1 pro and a HD Firestick as my test subjects.I do notice that the Charge 5 has a slight edge in real world testing for maximum volume and clearly has a crisper high end to it where the Charge 4 sounds a little more round but is still very pleasing to the ear. I suggest to save a ton of money and pickup the Charge 4 if you are planning on using them in a multi speaker setup like me.

    Great portable speaker

I use this in my garage when I’m working on our cars, or working outside in the yard. It’s safer than wearing headphones. The unit holds a charge forever. The unit connects with my phone easily, and stays connected. The music sounds good, with very intelligible sound even at higher volume levels.

    Easy to use

The speakers are easy to use, paired easily with my phone. They have some activity noise when you turn on/off that you can disable from the app. Sound quality is good once you setup your phone equalizer. The phone app doesn’t do much, helps apply updates and connect multiple speakers. For this speaker the equalizer option isn’t available on the app which made getting the correct sound out difficult. Initially music felt very flat as there as no preconfigured settings button on the speakers, you will either need a third party equalizer or manually adjust your phone equalizer to get the best bass/treble levels.Went with 4 stars as the app and speaker provide no easy means to adjust sound either with an equalizer on app or some preset button on the speaker.

    Great Speaker

I am in no way a professional sound system guy.I’m basically your average consumer looking for good stuff in leu of the known high quality and accordingly priced counterparts. This JBL speaker fits that bill.Very nice sound, soft or loud with clearity and plenty of bass. Loud enough for small yard or pool party’s too.It arrived 3/4 charged and I played it 4 hours and it still registers 3/4 charge. So I’m expecting battery life to be close to what the manufacturer specifies, 20 hours.I will use this for my tv, phone and computer which all connected flawlessly by Bluetooth.Great option my golf cart sound system also.I recommend this because of the sound quality and value.

    Smaller & Louder than most!

Needed a new speaker for working in warm moist enviroments that was smaller yet loud! This does the trick. Music comes out clear at all volumes, charges while you are listening, holds up in grow room enviroments! This speaker at 50% volume is louder than the W-King at 100% volume!

I mostly use this in my garage w/ Spotify. It’s a 30×40′ space and it provides pretty good sound for the size and purpose. Obviously, it’s not filling up the room blasting, but plenty of volume to keep you company and a decent frequency range and quality. I would recommend this for my type of use.

    JBL CHARGE 4

Easy connection via Bluetooth to iPhone. Great sound balance and volume. Mostly I listen to pop or classical. I use JBL app to adjust sound if needed although adjustments are not that useful. I also have a charge 3 and a charge 5. For me, the 4 is the best overall even though the 5 has a bigger battery. Battery life was never an issue with any of the speakers.

hell, its even fun just to turn on and off

Bought this on a whim and use it more than I thought I would. The sound quality is great. The battery life is excellent. The little sound cues it gives when you turn it on and off are fun and get stuck in your head. I’m sure everyone has seen a video of someone passing out and waking up and you can hear the default computer start up and shut down jingles. It’s like that, but cooler.

    Auxilliary Cable a savior

I was looking to add a portable bluetooth speaker that I can connect it to my Roland sp404mk2 sampler. It works fine together so that I can bring them both easily.

Well, on the third try I found speakers I’m going to keep, but…….

They sound good. Pretty amazing bass for such small speakers. (Not a patch on my vintage L150s, of course. 😄 )However, they have a really weird gap in the volume. You can have medium loud to as high as they’ll go, or pretty soft to very soft, but you cannot have medium. I will turn these down from a little too loud and hear it go to the volume that I want, and then hear it tick down to even softer. I can’t believe this couldn’t be fixed with a firmware update, and I sure hope it is. I’m a little tired of listening to them just a little louder than I really want.Getting them to stay in stereo mode is a little iffy, and it’s really annoying that you have to do it with their app, which really isn’t good for much except that. In the first place, you’d think that for two of them stereo mode would be the default, or that it would stay there when you set it, at the very least. And besides that why the heck do I have to use an app?? My little Oontz Angle Pros that cost a third of what these cost, and sound nearly as good, frankly, go into stereo mode and stay in stereo mode all by themselves. I really fail to see why these can’t do the same. Again, I bet this could be fixed with a firmware update and I hope it is.Uh-oh. Just found something that might be a deal killer. I was running the pair on batteries to see how long they lasted, and one of them cut off because it’s battery had run down. Okay fine. So I plugged in the USB cable and it blinked to show it was charging, but it wouldn’t play. Let me repeat that, it wouldn’t play. What kind of device won’t run off the input power while the battery is charging?? I’m going to see just how long it takes it to condescend to play again, but this issue may cause me to send back yet another pair of speakers. Who designs these things?? This issue is telling me that when the batteries go the speakers are also toast even if they are plugged in. Batteries don’t last forever, so I am on the verge of considering that unacceptable, much as I want to keep these.

    Long lasting portable speaker

This speaker is great for any outing where music is needed. It is loud enough for a backyard party or a beach day.

Can be connected by cable also

I have an older device that is not bluetooth. The JBL Charge 4 has a head phone size socket to plug in with a cable. That is not noted very clear in info. It works and sounds great either by cable or bluetooth.
