Effortless plug and play, tested with Windows, Linux, and Mac

I put this through the wringer and it passed everything. CD/DVD, rewritable, on Windows, Linux, Mac, read and write. Everything just worked without a hitch. I’ve been missing this. and I didn’t even realize it. You won’t go wrong with this little gem of a workhorse. Six stars were that possible

Making CDs is quick and easy now

Computers simply do not come with optical drives any more. If you’re an oldhead and want to make a mix CD of your favorite songs, you have to get an external drive to get the job done. While I’m always prepared to put a little extra work in, this optical drive made it a little easier. I was able to put my favorite 90s songs on a disc and play them right away on a CD player. This will also allow me to help my old folks out by compiling a few of their oldies for listening. Making the old folks happy is a priority. They can’t see those tiny screens to play music on tiny earbuds. They want to listen to music the way they did when they were younger. Now I can take care of them too. This is an inexpensive and great way to get things done. I can also burn copies of documents for backups, making this extra valuable for more than one purpose. I need two more!

    Nice external DVD drive

Most new computers these days no longer have CD or DVD drives, so having an external drive like this is really useful if you need to get data from a CD or DVD.It has an eject button, and an emergency eject hole. I like how the USB cable wraps/stores in the bottom of the player, and the cable has both a USB-C connector and a USB-A connector. It also has rubber feet on the bottom. We used this external DVD drive to play a DVD on my son’t computer and it worked fine. I didn’t try recording with this drive, as I didn’t have a need to do so yet.

    Love this external drive!

This drive is extremely plug-and-play on my Windows 10 desktop PC. I haven’t included optical drives in my computers for a while, and none of our laptops have CD/DVD drives anymore, so the fact that I can plug this in and it is working immediately is awesome.I tested it with DVD movies and data CDs. Worked great with all. Great to be able to easily go through my old backups!

    Nice

works great on my laptop and desktop. Now that laptops stopped offering dvd slots to watch videos and stuff. I can use this when I’m on the road and upload movies if I want to. or just enjoy watching movies.

Works on HP laptop running Win11

The media could not be loaded.

The primary purpose of my laptop of late has been keeping me entertained at work while we wait out the aftereffects of a cyber incident. While downloading stuff off of streaming services has its place, there are just somethings I want to watch that aren’t available… but they are in my DVD collection! But my new laptop doesn’t have a CD/DVD drive! 😭 Hence the need for an external drive!I was a little hesitant to order this external drive because my laptop runs Win11, and the listing did not specifically state that Win11 was compatible. I plugged in the drive and something happened. That’s always a good sign, right? I initially put in a DVD, but couldn’t get it to play. When I inserted a CD, however, that played just fine. So I knew the drive worked!I found that if my laptop was running Win11, I needed to download VLC Media player because though Windows Media Player Legacy knew what to do with a CD, it had a brain fart when it came to DVDs. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But that did the trick! I can now watch my old lady shows that aren’t fit for streaming while I wait for internet and email to return at work.

    quick and easy

i got this because my laptop has no disc drive. i wanted to backup my old photos and videos to the cloud as well as a usb drive so they wouldn’t degrade. the drive is quick and easy to use. the cord has both usb and usbc connectors for maximum compatibility.it worked perfectly and seemed to have fairly fast read speeds. overall this is a good choice for anyone needing physical media access.

    Easy to use

Both of my newer desktop and laptops do not have a DVD drive at all. Sometimes its nice to have that as a backup even when not needed for everyday use. This just plugged into the computer and started working quite well. I haven’t yet tested on my Linux system since it has a drive in it but I will soon to check how it works there. So far no issues with Windows 10/11 newer updates.

    Simple, lightweight and works

Laptops are not made with CD/DVD players anymore and that is a bummer. I have a large CD and DVD collection and just wanted to have a simple player that I can hook up whenever I want to. This one fits the bill. It is not fancy but it works and it suits my needs. I would recommend it to anyone who needs one that is also lightweight.

    Adds CD-DVD functionality

With modern computers and laptops not having CD or DVD readers, this drive is a perfect solution to add such functionality. This slim form factor makes it super easy to carry around especially with laptops. The drive is automatically recognized by Windows, and I am able to watch and listen to old CD’s and DVD’s, better yet, even copy CD’s and DVD’s. It’s nice how there’s an option to use USB 3.0 or USB-C port as well. Never heard of this brand, but works as expected, therefore a happy camper.

    INSANELY great VALUE

Many of us older computer users who were around before the advent of disc drives, really hate that newer computers don’t come with one. What do we do with all our older software and data discs, that we might still find useful? How do we use our computer to play video discs? Enter the Wbacon drive.Likes: at this price, it is a great value for anyone needing a CD/DVD solution. It can even write to recordable discs, and about the only thing it cannot work with, is Blue-Ray. Install is virtually painless and the small footprint greatly appreciated. Users of Windows 10 and Mac OS 13 and above (for both), will want to read the additional notes, below. If a Mac Studio user, and especially if a user of DWC’s external dual hot-swap hard drive (image), you will love how well it blends in with that hardware.Dislikes: Whoever translated Chinese to English obviously has difficulty with technical writing styles. The ‘instruction manual’ sucks, and is barely illuminating. A little patience will deal with most of that, but there are some things simply not suitably covered. Even so, install is quite plug-and-play easy, and use is mostly intuitive, such that use of the manual is almost a detriment, perhaps best left alone unless having difficulties. See the notes for some specifics you may find useful. Your computer can open the disc, but you must close it by hand. There is also a button on the front of the drive for opening it. When it opens, it opens just a little – you must pull it the rest of the way for loading. The center spool grabber is a bit stiff, such that you will find being timid about pressing down is not an option (the unit appears quite sturdy, despite amazingly light weight).Notes: Windows 10 or above will need a driver, as specified in the manual. All Macs should work with it seamlessly, no driver needed, though users of OS 13 and above will need to go to the Control Panel, and select ‘CDs & DVDs,’ and in the menu which results, select ‘Show Eject in the Menu Bar.’ That is how you will be able to open the tray or eject a disk. Burning a disc works the same way as you are used to in the older OS systems: after dragging and dropping files to the disc icon, use the File Menu to initiate the burn.

    Obnoxiously Loud DVD Drive

The media could not be loaded.

This is an external USB-C and USB-A optical drive for DVD and CD-ROM use.The drive can read and write to these optical media standards. This drive does not support Blue-Ray burning or reading (unfortunately).I am both excited and irate by a recent custom-built computer investment in the form of a high-end gaming workstation from CORSAIR/Origin with an impressive 6TB SSD storage, 96GB DDR5 RAM, AMD RYZEN 9, 4K OLED display, 24GB NVIDIA RTX 4090, and all the bells and whistles you could ever ask for including a SoundBlaster card. Despite my best efforts, I could not get a new Windows 11 Pro computer with a preinstalled optical drive of any kind.I have a humongous collection of DVDs and CDs from the 1980s till the present. Finding a solution to read my media collection has been challenging in the past five years.I was excited to plug this into my computer described above to give it a test run. The drive does a decent job reading media but is rather loud during operation. When I first plugged it in, I tried to read an old Beatles DVD concert that I obtained in Primorskaya – Saint Petersburg, Russia, at the metro station. The Wbacon DVD drive did not read the disc at all. Also, during this initial test, the drive sounded like a broken weed whacker when it first spun up.I checked the Device Manager in Windows 11 Pro, and the drive appeared recognized and installed correctly with all the proper configurations. At this point, I had only plugged the drive into the USB-C port on my Origin Founders Edition PC.Stumped, I unplugged the Wbacon DVD drive. Upon reentry, the Wbacon DVD started responding to my DVD player software. I swapped out the Beatles DVD this go-round and put in a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert. The drive did not sound as loud while reading discs as when plugged in the second time.I tried burning an ISO from my VLSC Microsoft portal downloads, and the DVD was completed successfully. The write speeds were relatively slow, though.I like the price of the drive because it is a great value. The USB-C connectivity is also a plus.I wouldn’t say I like the lightweight case, the writing speeds, the short cable to plug into computers, and the obnoxious noises it sometimes makes while operating. This drive is an excellent option if you need a cheap portable DVD drive to travel with and plug into many computers. There might be better options than this product if you need comprehensive reading/burning of optical media or want a quiet drive.I would have liked to see a better case for the DVD player because it feels flimsy. A plug-in power cord would also be a good feature, as well as a longer cable to plug into the computer with. The Wbacon DVD drive works out of the box on Win11 Pro. I did not test this on macOS.

    Worked out of the box

Since computers haven’t come with built in cd/dvd drives in a while, this is a nice item to have. I like to use my laptop to watch dvd’s while traveling occasionally. Especially if the hotel has a small tv too far away to watch comfortably. I also have some photos saved to disc from years ago. This has allowed me access some old photos again.

    Pricey

26 bucks for a disc drive seems to be about 2x what it should be, but oh well I suppose. When ya need one, ya need it – can’t argue away something’s usefulness when it’s needed, just get it and move on. Having the duel option cord is a small bonus. It does the job it is meant for, what else can be said, . . ?

I hate that my lap top doesn’t have a cd drive so this is very convenient. Works well and doesn’t take up a lot of room to store it. Satisfied with results. Easy to use

Convenient portable DVD Drive for driveless computers

More and more, computers are leaving out DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drives and I found myself wanting a portable DVD-ROM drive to occasionally plug into a computer or laptop to occasionally read/play discs.I am happy to report that this Wbacon DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drive fits the bill. It is not as speedy or as quick as standard drives but it works good enough for the occasional use. It is still better to have a full DVD-ROM drive for performance purposes.I confirm that I was able to read both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM discs and that is all I need them for.

    Behold, the past!

I have had a stack of DVD-RWs sitting around since… forever. My parents found them in a box of my old stuff when they were cleaning out the old family home and sent them along to me, and for years they’ve just been kind of taking up space, teasing my curiosity with their unlableledness. So finally I gave in and got this. Dropped my old DVDs in and…They’re low-resolution pirated MST3k episodes. What wonders we send into the future. I’m not sure what I was hoping it would be.Ah well, the drive works just fine. Plugs in and spins up and reads disks. Not much more you can ask of it!

    Fantastic

This external drive was truly a miracle. Just when it arrived my old computer’s disc drive just decided not to burn discs anymore as i was in the middle of a huge home video conversion project. This drive is plug and play and worked immediately. The cord is VERY short and im sure it’s because this is intended for laptops – but for desktop users it’s a bit of a pain. Nothing that an extender cable didn’t easily fix. I have burned almost 100 videos with this drive and it is still working great with absolutely no issues. I love it and highly recommend!
